ANERA has created a collection of anti-smoking materials for distribution in Lebanon as part of their Creative Health Campaign. The materials were printed with the help of 28 partner organizations and include posters, stickers, games, cards and educational items aimed at promoting smoke-free spaces, protecting non-smokers from secondhand smoke, and encouraging smokers to quit. The various materials can be used in community events, schools, clinics and other settings to educate people about the dangers of smoking cigarettes and narghileh.

ANTI-SMOKING MATERIALS
ANERA’s Creative Health Campaign (CHC) has
recently created a coordinated collection of anti-
smoking materials for wide distribution
throughout Lebanon. The collection is in
keeping with the CHC’s strategic focus on anti-
smoking and will be the backbone of many
campaign activities for the coming year

The materials: The 15 different kinds of sets of
materials are tools in the Creative Health
Campaign’s “Aqua Dunia” initiative that
includes community-based actions; street events;
community festivals, addressing students in
schools/ universities, training activists in
smoking cessation tips, widening the circle of
partners, printing and distributing a high number
of prints etc.
Objectives: The materials are support tools to
activities/programs that aim at:
*Promoting smoke free spaces;
*Protecting all second-hand smokers,
especially babies and children, from cigarette
and arghileh smoke;
*Encouraging smokers to quit and non-
smokers not to start smoking.
The materials include the following items:

2. Tala and Karim stickers (2 stickers, 5 by
5.5 cm each)
3. Tala, Karim, Sarah and Shadi coloring
outline (4 outlines on A4)
4. Tala and Karim maze (one maze 21 by

bracelets)
6. No Junk cards game (Set of 37 cards,
9.5 by 6.5 cm each, and folder)
7. Aqua Dunia game (card-board game, 30
by 30 cm)
8. Narghileh (water-pipe) warning stickers

Classifications: The materials can also be
classified under the following:
No Smoking signs: For the first time the image
of smoking Narghileh appears together with that
of cigarettes warning about the dangers of
Narghileh. The No smoking sign appears in
many of Summer 09 materials including Tala
and Karim’s materials, No Smoking cut-out,
Aqua Dunia game and Tobacco Truth 20 cards.
Tala and Karim materials: Children have fun
and learn as they interact with Tala and Karim
materials (make a crown, make a mask, puzzle,
write and draw next to the images, make your
own jewelry, color the image in the outline, pin
up, play and enjoy, use in parades and festivals
etc.).
Narghileh dangers: Many of the materials
focus on Narghileh as its use is dangerous and
unregulated. Educational materials focusing on
Narghileh are minimal. The materials include all
those with No Smoking sign, Narghileh stickers
(credit to Tobacco Control Research group at
AUB), Tobacco Warnings images (credit to
WHO and other) and the Aqua Dunia game.
Tobacco Warnings: Pictorial images that show
the truth of how smoking affect our bodies, have
proven effectiveness in motivating smokers to
quit smoking and to reduce the appeal of
tobacco for those who are not yet addicted

Narghileh Warning stickers, Narghileh and
Cigarettes Warning cards and the Smoker’s
Body. These materials can be pinned up, used as
warning elements on Narghileh, used in
interactive educational games, posted in clinics/
offices/ community centers, schools, festivals,
exhibits etc.
Games for children: Children learn as they
enjoy the interactive games. Included are:
• “NO JUNK” cards game,
• Tobacco Warning cards,
• “Aqua Dunia game”
• Tala and Karim materials etc.
The coupons: 5 messages (including the
contents of cigarettes). The coupons can be used
in activities addressed to children /animators /
activists (songs, stories, drawings, puppet shows
etc.) during festivals, street events and as take
home messages. The “contents of cigarette”
(smoking is stupidity) coupon has been
successfully used in “cooking a cigarette”
activity.
Materials for exhibits /festivals /street events /
pin up in centers or schools or clubs etc.: All
of the above materials have multiple usages. All
users are encouraged to create new utilizations
and new materials.
