LIFESTYLE • BABY TAYLOR GUITARS
N
ot that long ago student model ¾ size guitars were built with
inferior materials, were hard to play, seldom stayed in tune and
were barely a step above a toy. This is also the reason that many
young students of the guitar frequently stopped practicing when it hurt
their fingers to press the strings down to the fretboard. Bob Taylor and his
team at Taylor Guitars set out to build a ¾ sized acoustic guitar that could
be used by children, intermediate students and travelers seeking a smaller
lighter instrument.
What separates the Baby Taylor series from similar
instruments are the tonewoods used in its construction, quality
of craftsmanship, superior sound and ease of playing. The
model that Maverick received for review is the Baby Taylor
BT2e acoustic electric guitar model. Features included a
mahogany wood top, Sapele back and sides, ebony
fingerboard, varnish finish, nubone nut and saddle with
die cast chrome button tuners. The electronics are
cutting edge with the new ES-B system that uses
under saddle piezo elements, an onboard preamp
and built in tuner with tone and volume knob
adjustments top and easy battery access.
The BT2e also comes with a sturdy and
well-padded gig bag that has a pocket on the
front for accessories, shoulder straps, carrying
handles and the embroidered Taylor Guitar logo on
the front. The ease of chording, strumming and soloing
on these guitars has the feel of a much more expensive
instrument. You won’t achieve the bass tones that you do from a
larger bodied instrument but the mahogany really warms up the tones
and it is perfect for backing up vocals.
In Nashville the Baby Taylor and GS Mini models have become go to
guitars for singer/songwriters that don’t want to travel with their expensive
instruments or leave them in their vehicle . The BT2e Baby Taylor guitar is
great value and it’s perfect for students, travelers or singer/songwriters. It’s
easy to see why this model continues to be one of Taylor’s top sellers.
