TOP TRENDS FOR ‘17
Leading British barber MIKE TAYLOR,
the male grooming expert at The
Bluebeards Revenge, expects to see
a combination of long hair, crew cuts,
French crops, and modern twists
on popular 1970s styles next year.
Here Mike gives Men’s Room the low
down on each style and discusses the
best ways to get, and perhaps more
importantly, maintain the look.
LONGER HAIR
No matter how you want to wear your
longer hair, make sure you’re using a
barber that is good with their scissors
and knows how to texturise – this will
stop your hair looking limp and lifeless.
A matt paste works nicely with these
types of style too as it adds hold, but
still leaves the hair looking natural.
SLICKED BACK
It’s been hovering around for a few
years now, but this look will be massive
in 2017. With longer hair styles making
a comeback, it’s only natural that the
slicked back look will also gain some
serious traction as it allows men with
medium-to-long locks to wear their
hair in a neat, professional manner;
whether that be for formal occasions,
a first date, or a selfie in the bathroom
mirror.
Yes, glue your hair and slick it back; rub
some gel, or pomade (for that classic
look) through your fingers and slick
your hair back from the front of your
head to your nape. Then, take a comb
and carefully pull through the hair,
making sure every last strand is where
you want it.
CREW CUT
Men have been wearing their hair short
for a while now, and 2017 will be no
different. A crew cut is great for men
with thinning hair, as well as the gents
with really thick untameable mops. It’s
a timeless cut that will return year after
year. Insist your barber adds a hair
tonic for a fresh look and smell too.
FRENCH CROP
This popular ‘90s haircut seems be
making a return, but with more of a
geek chic look to it. Expect to see it
texturised and on the heads of many
celebs. Ideally, you want this style to
look effortless and unpolished, so a
matt clay works perfectly.

Barbers’ Association and has recently

T
he winter months can be just as detrimental to
the hair as the heat of summer. The elements
always have an adverse affect on hair so extra
care must always be taken to avoid damage. Firstly,
and probably most importantly, is to get a good
haircut to remove any damaged ends that may
have been caused by sun or swimming during the
summer. Hair is at its best when it is healthy from root
to tip, so have an in-salon treatment when you have it
cut and purchase a good professional shampoo and
conditioner to treat the hair at home.
As you should throughout the year, make sure you’re
careful with heat styling at home. If straightening or
tonging hair, make sure you have put in a good initial
blow dry using good prep products so that the hot
tools are just a finishing tool and don’t need to be concentrated on areas of the hair
for too long to give a good finish.
From a colour point of view, you may want to slightly deepen your colour through
the winter months as it will make hair look shinier and healthier – it’s harder to get as
much hair reflection without as much sun.
If you want to wear a hat to avoid the damage from wind and rain but want to
avoided dreaded ‘hat hair’ wrap the hair in a silk scarf first. This will keep static away
and also stop the hair from rubbing against the abrasive texture of a wool beanie.
Keeping hair washing to a minimum is also a good idea, this will stop the hair from
drying out too much as the natural oils are great for the hair. However when you do
wash it, make sure you don’t go out with it wet, as wet hair plus the cold air is not
good for the hair and will incur damage far quicker than on dry hair.
