Mid America Freedom Band Rainbow Revolution Concert 2009
16 Newsletter 3
1. This year, 2016, we’ll be doing a
little time traveling. Our concert
will be the 40th presented to the
Boyertown area so the Unit will
not only be playing some of the
music the Unit played in those
first years plus highpoints along
the way to this year, but there’ll
be some great displays in the
lobby of memorabilia and photos.
maintained that list by hand until
computers arrived; and she played
a mean clarinet. She has been a
hard act to follow!
Arlen R. Saylor—teacher, men-
tor, band leader extraordinaire
and let’s face it, Father of this
Unit—passed away in July. We
have always striven to maintain his
standards—in fact there is a re-
frain when we talk about how
something should be done “what
would Mr. Saylor say?” And that
was the level of respect. He was
Mr. Saylor to us all. And “father”
because, well, this Unit just would
not exist if it were not for this
man. Thumbs up to Mr, Saylor.
This has been a very hard news-
letter to write and apologies to
our friends for the late delivery.
We have lost some very wonderful
people, important people to our
Unit family. With any organization
that has been together for as many
years as this group, losses such as
these can be expected but it is still
very hard.
We have many wonderful
memories and the photos in this
newsletter will speak volumes. Just
a few words here about those who
have passed on to that heavenly
band—there’s got to be some
great and awesome music where
they are now!
First to leave us was Lee
Guinther from our clarinet sec-
tion—what a wit. He livened up
many a rehearsal and especially our
famous after event get-togethers!
Most recently we lost our oldest
playing member, Fred Kern. He was
a very talented trumpet player and
played with many organizations. We
were so happy he chose our group
as one of his favorites.
In September we lost our Unit’s
first and longest serving music li-
brarian, Joan Beiler. She did so much
for the Unit. For decades she had
filing cabinets of music in her home
and filled our folders every year
(not a small task!); she sent out
newsletters to our patron family and
A FULL 40 YEARS:
Remembering Great
Times & Great People
Forty years ago the Unit borrowed
some music from Mr. Saylor’s high
school music library and presented
the first Spring Concert. This year
we’ll include “Russian Sailors’
Dance” and “St. Louis Blues March”
to honor that first ever concert.
Listen for many familiar pieces that
we have played off and on over
the years and lots of marches,

of course.
Then we’ll end the first half of the
concert with a new piece of music
from a famous time traveling TV
show, Doctor Who—the music is
the signature theme of one of the
Doctor’s regenerations entitled “I
Am the Doctor” arranged by
Robert Buckley.

2. Thank you again to all our loyal
supporters. Your contributions as
patrons of the Unit continue to
allow us to perform our annual
Spring Concerts with new music
in the Donald J. Kuszyk Auditori-
um at Boyertown Jr. High West.
Funds from our patrons help
defray many of the costs the Unit
must pay—from auditorium
rental to bus transportation
when performing out of the area.
Patron sponsorship also allows
the Unit to give back to the com-
munity by providing a scholarship
each year to a Boyertown Area
High School senior.
This year, our 40th year,
we are planning a special
commemorative program to
hand out at the Spring Concert
and we would like you to par-
ticipate! If you have a special
memory or would like to just
include your well wishes or
thanks, we will have a special
page set aside for your words.
We just ask that you include an
extra $5 to help defray the cost
of the page.
Once again this newsletter
mailing offers a form for our
followers to become support-
ers as well as a way to purchase
Spring Concert tickets and to
pre-order CDs. Please be sure
to make at least a $5 contribu-
tion to help pay for the costs of
this newsletter, but we also
encourage you to take advantage
of ordering your tickets to avoid
waiting in line to buy them at the
door. Also, you can request addi-
tional copies of this newsletter
to pass along to your friends—
or send us their name and
address—we will be happy to put
them on our mailing list.
Once again thank you for your
support and assistance in keeping
music alive in our community!
Simmons, Renee Allmendinger &
Melissa Cherkasky will fill those
roles.
We would like to give a big
“Thank You!” to all the out-going
officers & captains: Bill Floyd;
Dawn Devlin & Cindy DuBree
(color guard); Sue Orff (twirlers);
and Becky Fretz (flags).
Just a reminder to all our friends,
we are always looking for
persons interested in taking an
active role in our Unit. We
The new year of 2016 brought
the bi-annual election of officers
and captains for BAMU. And this
year Bill Floyd decided that it
was time to hang up his treasur-
er’s hat and hand the reins over
to someone new. So after 24
years, a new treasurer for the
Unit was elected in the person
of Tim Simmons. He’ll have
some pretty big shoes to fill!
The Color Guard has a new
captain & co-captains: Bonnie

trombonists, horn players, and
flutists to name a few musicians.
Plus the band front is always
hoping more will come out to
perform. So if you used to play
an instrument or were in the
front, or know someone who
did—come on out and play with
us! You just need to either be a
Boyertown Alum or live in the

vices members, our twirlers, flags and rifle
corps add a flash and a thrill to the perfor-
mance. You won’t want to miss this memory-
filled concert!
But if you can’t make it to the Spring Concert
at 7 pm on Saturday April 30th, your next
opportunity will be the Boyertown Fun Days
Concert on Saturday, June 4th.
Don’t forget to send in your Patron Form
with your own memories and order tickets
for this year’s Spring Concert.
A fun feature of this Spring Concert will be
the many different guest conductors, many of
them currently teaching in the Boyertown
Area School District. Others have had expe-
rience playing with or conducting the Unit
over the years. We hope to also have a large
number of former members turn out to
swell the ranks of band front and musicians.
Throughout the concert our famous band
front will make special appearances but the
finale is sure to be spectacular as the Unit
will perform Arlen R. Saylor’s arrangement,
“United Services Medley”. Always a truly
