Companies have made some bold promises when it comes to #diversity initiatives, even before the protests ignited by the death of George Floyd. Women and minorities are underrepresented in several industries. This disparity is especially evident within the tech industry where female software developers are conspicuously absent. To address this issue, several organizations have launched programs to attract women into #stemcareers. As such, the future possibilities of #recruiting more women into tech roles is encouraging. But, what about today? How can #tech companies secure diverse talent like female software developers for #techhiring in this highly competitive market? In this presentation, learn 7+ tactics for #sourcing female software developers.
10. #1Source from
podcasts
BASIC STRATEGY:
• There are a lot of podcasts online covering all sorts of topics.
• Look for guests on podcasts that might prove a worthy hire.
• More often than not, the podcast show will mention who
their guest is and what they will be talking about.
• Also, network with the podcast host as they are probably
well connected if they have a long-running podcast.

1. Search for mentions of software engineers and
the pronoun “she” in hopes of finding female
developers who have been guests on podcasts.
2. Check out the results! I found several good leads
this way.
3. Automate the search so you only have to do it
once.
NOTE:

15. After adding my search, I want
to refine my results to pictures.
So, I click the “Images” link.
16. So, I mouse over “Settings” and
click “Advanced Search.”
Hmm… I’m not excited
about these results.
17. I add my search terms and
additional criteria as shown.
18.
19. At this point, I scroll through the
results and click on the images that I
think belong to female software
developers. When I click the photos,
more often than not, I get a name,
job title and the company they work
for.
NOTE:
20. I like these results but, still not
in love. I decide to tweak my
search a bit more.
21. I changed the search (as shown in
the search box) and I like these
results a lot more! FYI, I did not
return to Advanced Settings.
Still, after reviewing them, I
consider a couple more
tweaks.
22. Tweaks:
• I change the “aspect ratio” to Square and I
get a different set of leads. Yay!
• I also would consider additional searches
like “she is a software developer”
23. Another tweak, of course, is to search without
the “Advanced Search” refinements. And last,
but not least, click on these suggestions as they
may lead to more of what you are looking for.
24. I also recommend searching outside of Google as
well. Check out the suggestions Bing Images
gives like “Black female Software Engineer” and
“Chinese Female Software Engineer.” Great for
even more diversity sourcing!
25. Bing has filters similar to Google
and by leveraging them, I get
more of what I want. Cool.
26. By the way, if you are
impressed by what you’ve
seen so far and just happen
to be short on recruiters
then, we should talk.

OTHER HASHTAGS TO EXPERIMENT WITH
IN YOUR TWITTER SEARCHES
33. Hmm… Would this be an article that
female engineers share on Twitter?
Umm… I think so.
34. Searching the URL on Twitter reveals
the accounts that have shared the
article. Maybe you want to recruit the
people who tweeted it and/or recruit
the people that follow them?
35. These are all Twitter accounts that shared the article I found. Lots of organizations that I can source from and network with.
36. Do you think recruiting
is all we do?
It just sort of hit me as I was doing this
that some of you may be thinking that
we are a one trick pony. I assure we
are not. In fact, we offer a myriad of
services to help you attract, recruit
and retain talent.
We are always open to a conversation about:
• Employer Branding
• Recruitment Marketing
• Content Development
• OnDemand Recruiting
• Recruiting Optimization

LET’S TALK
37. And since this presentation is
about recruiting females, you
may have an interest in this
case study.
40. Presumably, only women are on
maternity leave so this search should
yield mostly (if not totally) females.

If you add traditional female names
to your search strings, you will likely
get female candidates in your search
results.
44. There are a LOT of
tech scholarships for
women out there.
Why not recruit the
women who won in
the past?
45. information technology scholarships for women (winners OR recipients) 2018
Hmm… I wonder if any of
these scholarship winners
could be found on LinkedIn?
Just wondering…
46. END
My time is up! I thank you for yours. If you ever
want to talk attracting, recruiting and retaining
talent. Let’s have a conversation about that.
