2. As an orthopaedic surgeon in the Las Vegas area for
more than 20 years, Dr. Mark Kabins treats many
painful conditions and diseases. Here, he explains a
common condition known as Sacroiliac Joint
Dysfunction.
3. Sacroiliac joint dysfunction affects the body structure of
the same name, which is located between the ilium and
the sacrum bones of the pelvis. Crucial to structural
stability in the body, the sacroiliac joint plays a key role
in transferring weight loads to the lower body, limiting
horizontal rotation in the pelvis, and giving birth. When
the joint is damaged, it causes lower back pain with
radiated discomfort in nearby areas such as the
buttocks, abdomen, and groin.
4. Because childbirth accounts for much of the stress
placed on the sacroiliac joint, pain in this area is often
caused by pregnancy. This pain can present long after
the childbirth event. Sacroiliac pain may also result from
injury to the joint, poor hip alignment, arthritis, or an
arthritic infection. However, some patients may
experience sacroiliac pain without an identifiable cause.
