2. Transfer
Depending on your academic/career goals, there may come a time when you
decide to transfer to a 4-year college or university to earn a bachelor’s degree.
The process of transferring can be an intricate and dynamic process. This
presentation outlines what you will need to know to transfer seamlessly and
successfully.
3. Two types of transfer
Before Completion of an
Associate degree
Taking some classes then
transferring before graduation
Completing an Associate Degree
Graduation with a transferrable
degree
4. Transferring without a degree
Most colleges require 24-30 credits to be considered a transfer student.
If you do not meet their requirements, you will need to submit high school transcripts
and SAT/ACT scores
It is important to complete courses that will transfer to the 4 year college or
university
Most colleges have a transfer guide on their websites to help choose the
appropriate courses
This option allows you to transfer to a 4-year institution sooner. If you weren’t such a
great student in the past, accumulating more credits may increase your chances of
being accepted.
Grades of “C” or better are generally transferable
The higher your grade point average (G.P.A.), the better. You should strive for a
2.5 (G.P.A.) or higher.
5. Associate of Science (AS) or Associate of Art (AA) Degree
If you plan to transfer to a 4-year college, an Associate of Science (AS) or Associate
of Art (AA) Degree would prepare you to transfer; most if not all credits earned at
Thomas Nelson
Associate of Arts (AA)
Liberal Arts ( Theatre, Music performance)
Associate of Science (AS)
Business Administration, Engineering, Science (Computer Science, Math-
Education), Social Science (Education), and Information Technology
Completing a transferrable degree will require that you choose courses
that have been approved for transfer. There is a list of Approved
General Education Transfer Electives (see Thomas Nelson’s catalog).
Deviating from the courses on this list may result in you not satisfying
your degree requirements.
Transferrable degrees are designed to satisfy the core or general
education part of the curriculum at the 4-year institution which means
that you may be able to begin at the 4-year institution as a Junior.
6. Associate of Applied Science (AAS)/Associate of Applied Arts Degree (AAA)
Although Thomas Nelson has some articulation agreements with 4-year
colleges/universities for the AAS and AAA degrees, not all of the courses or
credits earned in an AAS or AAA at Thomas Nelson will transfer. Generally, the
general education courses, i.e. (English, Math, Science) will transfer and not
the specific major courses.
The AAS and AAA degrees are considered occupational technical because they
are designed to provide you with the skills necessary for employment in your
chosen career.
Speak with a transfer advisor to learn more about articulation agreements for
AAS and AAA degree programs.
Examples of AAS degrees include: Accounting, Administration of Justice,
Administrative Support Technology, Automotive Technology, Computer-Aided
Drafting & Design Technology, Dental Hygiene, Early Childhood Development,
Electronics Technology(Electrical Engineering Technology-Electromechanical
Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology(Marine, Mechanical Design) Fire
Science Technology, Human Services, Information Systems Technology,
Management(Marketing), Nursing, Paralegal Studies, Technical
Studies(Electrical Technology, Engineering Technology, HVAC, Industrial
Technology)
Examples of AAA degrees include: Fine Arts, Computer Arts, Photography(Visual
Communications)
7. Articulation and Guaranteed Admission agreements
Articulation Agreements
An articulation agreement is signed by the 4-year college and a Thomas Nelson
official.
Does not guarantee admission
Most articulation agreements require completion of specific coursework
listed on the agreement. Make sure you talk to an advisor to ensure you are
taking the appropriate courses to transfer.
Guaranteed Admissions
Virginia Community College Guaranteed Admissions agreements allow guaranteed
acceptance to a 4-year college/university. All agreements require graduation
from Thomas Nelson and you must obtain a certain G.P.A. to be guaranteed
acceptance into the institution. The G.P.A. requirement can be as low as 2.0 and
as high as 3.6 depending on the institution.
Some schools may require specific courses to be satisfied at the the
Associate’s Degree level.
May require a letter of intent or interest to be submitted as far as a year in
advance of the intended semester of transfer.
8. Benefits of completing an A.S. or A.A degree
Save Money
You can satisfy half of a bachelor’s degree at a significantly lower tuition rate. There is also a
Virginia Community College Transfer Grant (up to $2,000) available for students at the 4-year
college/university upon transfer. The grant is awarded at the 4-year college and requires a
3.0 G.P.A. and other financial need. (To see if you qualify, ask an advisor for a copy)
When you transfer, you must pay the 4-year college/university tuition rate.
Ease in transferability of credits
Typically, completion of the associate degree will satisfy the general education requirements
for the four year institution. It’s not necessary to verify each and every course as long as you
follow the Thomas Nelson curriculum.
9. Things to consider when transferring
Identify your prospective institution by the end of your second semester. This will help
you have more time to plan your courses to ensure transfer.
Depending on your intended major at the four year institution, completing a degree
may not be your best option. Discuss your intended major with an advisor to ensure you
are on the right track.
If you are looking to transfer out of state, it is best to speak with an advisor at that
college. We do not have any agreements with out of state schools. Although, Thomas
Nelson is accredited, we cannot guarantee the transferability of courses out of state.
