Global Generation hosts Eurostar staff day
1. Global Generation hosts Eurostar staff day
03.08.13
Eurostar has been training Global Generation’s youth leaders in customer service on a special
week-long work experience programme which involves working at St Pancras International, in
their offices and on a Eurostar train from London to Paris, writes Jane Riddiford, Executive
Director.
Recently Global Generation had the opportunity to return the favour. We ran a training day for a
high performing group of Eurostar employees to further develop their leadership potential in
our very own portable training ground; the Kings Cross Skip Garden. The purpose of the day
designed by Marie Claude Bouchet, Talent and Engagement Consultant, and Jane , was to explore
visions of leadership whilst developing a deeper connection with the local community and the
natural world. In true GG style the workshop included a combination of values based reflection
and hands on doing.
A key inquiry thread for the day was the story of The Three Baskets of Knowledge,
which encouraged everyone to consider three significant dimensions of existence; ourselves as we
truly are, seeing and respecting the other and appreciating the interconnectivity and creativity
upon which the universe is built.
2. “The outdoors, sunshine, nature, getting your hands dirty was genuine fun. It was good to learn
from others and think about yourself and values in a much wider and more important context than
just your company/job/department. I appreciated what amazing projects are going on outside
typical corporate life, and how it is possible to give something back by doing and working
together.”

Maximum use was made of our wonderful piles of construction waste. The group worked in small
teams and were set the challenge of creating a planter that told a story of social and environmental
responsibility. After a session with own in house GG Dragons Rachel Solomon, Paul Richens and
Amir Miah, the teams set to converting pallets, pipes, tyres, a wheel barrow and a supermarket
trolley into an imaginative array of planters.
“I felt the construction of the planter was extremely useful in highlighting the values necessary
as a leader but also as a team member, as there would be no planters as amazing as they are
without the enthusiasm, motivation, direction and hard work that was implemented. It made us all
realise the importance of responsibility of both the wider community and the planet.”

3. "Can this same idea, a teamwork-completed project, be achieved in real business challenges at
Eurostar? Why not?"

GG’s leadership and sustainability practice was re-iterated by our young Generators who
participated in each of the teams.
“ The influence of the Generators and hearing their values about leading added an inspiring
component to the day.”
Marie Claude Bouchet, Eurostar Talent and Engagement consultant
"Today was a new experience... I got stuck in, dirty and hot. The values that we talked about
earlier to do with leadership, I saw, were applied and everyone showed qualities pertaining to
leadership."
