Faith in Film
Film has an amazing capacity to describe
our human story and cause us to think about our
lives in new ways. Barry Levinson, an Academy
Award-winning director, screenwriter and
producer has said that “If a picture is worth a
thousand words, then a video is worth a million.
Nothing has as much impact as the moving
image. It stirs our passions, our outrage …” I
have been considering the ways that movies have
impacted my life. As a child, I remember putting
on a cape and running around the house after
watching Superman. Or getting a magnifying
glass and notebook out to investigate the
mysteries of my neighborhood after watching a
film about Sherlock Holmes. Who is your
favorite TV or Movie character? What is it about
that person that you like? Is it the way they
dress, speak, think, or act? Have you ever tried
to imitate that person?
He would often point to a nearby object
and say ‘The kingdom of God is like this child
here, or this tree, or this field…” Jesus used the
tools of his day to communicate with his disci-
ples. He not only spoke in the temple but out in
the field and on the hillsides where the crowds
could hear him. He used everyday items to
demonstrate the deeper truths about God’s

question.
In the 21st
century, the church continues to follow this innovative
tradition of Jesus to use the tools that are available to us to demonstrate
the truths of God’s kingdom. I want you to come and journey with us
through the scriptures using the tools of media and film this next
season. It is my prayerful hope that in seeing these people of faith live
out their lives before us in film, that each of us will find something to
imitate in our own lives.
Peace,
-Pastor David

Life Groups
Looking for a place to connect with others and grow in your faith? Life
groups are small group opportunities to grow in Christian faith and connect
with others. There are four group times available: Sundays at 8:30am or
6:30pm, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10am. For more information contact
the church office.
Premiere Sunday
On September 13th
at 10am, we will be kicking off our fall
season with a “Hollywood” themed worship service and
coffee hour. In preparation for this, we are looking for items
that could help to create a movie premier atmosphere. In par-
ticular, we are looking for posters, props, or other equipment that could help
to set the stage for our times together on Sunday mornings. Feel free to come
dressed as your favorite movie star.
Faces of Faith
Come and see the scriptures come to life! Our movie theme will carry over to
each Sunday this fall, and will feature different characters of the Bible in
film. We will watch and explore the ways that people of faith have been
portrayed in film as they face some of life’s most difficult challenges. If you
have some movie suggestions, please email pastor David.

MEET THE BISHOP - SEPTEMBER 11-13, 2015
Have you had an opportunity to meet Bishop
Minerva Carcaño? She has been the Bishop of the
Cal-Pac Conference for three years and has set aside
time to go about the East District and spend time in
getting to know us. The Greater San Gabriel Mission
Area has invited her to join us for luncheon on
Friday, September 11th
at Church of the Good
Shepherd in Arcadia at 12:00 PM. This provides an
opportunity to share with her the many projects
which we as a Mission Area have been busy doing.
If you plan to attend, please make a reservation. The
luncheon costs $10.00. There will be a flyer on Sunday mornings with an
RSVP section which must be completed and returned to Connie Deckon
by September 1st
. The Bishop will be attending many activities during
this weekend. Saturday, enjoy an informal celebration at Riverside First
UMC with all sorts of activities for families and BBQ as well. On
Sunday afternoon, there will be a Worship Service from 3:00-4:30 for all
to attend at Bell Memorial UMC in Rowland Heights. Keep these
opportunities on your calendar for they will heighten your awareness of
our Connectional Church.

Are You Ready?
FUMTC has been selected to participate in a program to help bring
growth & vitality to the church: Readiness 360+. This is a 15-month
program that uses a combination of web-based feedback and in-person
seminars to help the church grow to its fullest potential. The web-
based program measures 4 qualities that are essential in growing a
congregation. They are: spiritual intensity, missional alignment,
dynamic relationships, and cultural openness. Over the course of 15
months, beginning in September, there will be 6 day-long training
sessions that a team of 7-10 members from the church will attend. The
program includes 6 books to read (corresponding with the training
sessions) as well. In between each training session, the team will work
to achieve the goals set between the church & an individual coach who
will help guide the church to reach our goals. This would be a great
opportunity to help the church grow. If you are interested in being a
part of the Readiness 360+ team, please contact the church office:
(626) 286-3129.
Disciple Fast Track at Our Church
Bible Study for Busy Lives
Our church is participating in the second round of
beta testing for Disciple Fast Track. We’re
forming our group now to go through the study
together. For nearly thirty years, the original
Disciple Bible Study has helped millions of people
read through the Bible and grow their faith through
a 34-week class. The new Fast Track study leads groups through the
Bible in a shortened, 24-week format while maintaining the integrity
and principles of the original study. Each session lasts 75 minutes and
includes new, easy-to-use print and video materials and an online
community give participants and leaders the tools to absorb and retain
what they learn in this shortened format.
