Focal length is also related to the perspective distortion effect.
Simply, the smaller the focal length is, the bigger the distance between the near and
distant objects will appear.

For example, on this picture, we see how far the mountains are from Mary:

On the lower image, however, the mountains appear very close even though both
pictures were taken from almost the same distance from the mountains.

The change in perspective has also affected Mary's face. In the first picture, it's elongated like a bicycle
helmet while, in the second one, the proportions are completely normal.
