The UK Pensions Dilemma
Will We Sink or Will We Float?
Margarita Theophilou, the Producer of the marcus evans UK Pensions & Investments
Summit 2011 taking place in London, UK, 6 - 7 October 2011, shares her outlook on the
UK pensions industry.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Never before in British history has the pensions sector experienced such tumultuous, challenging or life-altering conditions as in the
last couple of years. Numerous pension funds across the country have experienced severe deficit gaps, leaving both employers and
employees exposed as to where their future lies in terms of paying out and receiving pensions.
At the Helm of the Blame Game
Not one, but several different factors have contributed to this unstable economic status quo - precarious investments,
underperforming asset classes, the 2008 global credit crunch, longevity, and obsolete pension fund governance systems, have all
played a part in the under-performance of pension fund management.
Toss Me a Buoy – I’m Drowning!
In an attempt to salvage excessive funds from flowing out of pension schemes and into retirees’ pockets, corporate pension funds
have adopted the popular trend of converting schemes from Defined Benefit Status to Defined Contribution Status, yet still
providing retirees with basic pensions upon their retirement. This shift in pension fund status has consequently urged employees to
personally seek out solutions for their pensions, either by individually saving towards retirement, or seeking out solutions from
advisors and consultants for streamlined, guided and guaranteed pensions.
Your Pension Depends on it
Since individual pension funds have taken measures to prevent further loss of excess funds into the hands of pensioners, the
government has also taken positive and drastic action to protect citizens who may have been left exposed by insolvent pension
schemes, or people who would have lost a large part of their pensions if no action was taken, by setting up the Pension Protection
Fund, the National Employment Savings Trust and other essential governmental bodies to fill existing pension voids and provide a
solid safety net to exposed individuals.
The Pensions Conclusion
In order to stabilise the current status quo and offer resilient solutions to individuals for the future, the Pensions Report – the UK’s
premier and most influential point of reference regarding the pensions sector - suggests prolonging the working age to 66 by the
year 2030, and extending it thereafter to 67 by 2040 and then to 68 by 2050 – always based on life-expectancy in order to provide
a proper balance between life expectancy and pensions payout at the end of one’s career. Last, but not least, the Pensions Report
makes provisions for people who do not belong to a workplace pension scheme to be automatically enrolled into NEST and also
encourages employers to contribute to workers’ pensions.
