Why a Proactive Approach is a Must for Safety Preparedness - Vic DeMasi News Release
1. Interview with: Vic DeMasi, Chief
Operating Officer, Deployed
Resources
“Be proactive in your preparedness plan
to ensure employee safety and to
protect revenue-generating activities,”
advises Vic DeMasi, Chief Operating
Officer, Deployed Resources.
“Through innovative logistical ap-
proaches, employee safety and facility
profitability can both be enhanced,” he
adds.
Deployed Resources is a solution
provider at the marcus evans
Petrochemical & Refining Summit
2016, in Houston, Texas, July 18-20.
What issues in the petrochemical
and refining industry can Deployed
Resources address? How?
When they are experiencing major
maintenance or unforeseen events, such
as hurricane response, they often need
temporary facility structures. That is
what we do. We provide temporary
infrastructure when they have a surge
of personnel on site, including tempo-
rary dining facilities, blast-resistant
offices, containerized climate-controlled
restrooms or shower units. We are part
of the logistics solution during pre-
planned events as well as unforeseen
facility disruptions, including strikes
where there might be a lock-in.
This is about safety preparedness. They
need an industry leading partner like
Deployed Resources to ensure the
safety of their personnel. We can bring
in everything, whether it is temporary
power generation, potable water
systems or containerized laundry units
and all the personnel to support, to
include chefs for food service and
personnel with experience with working
on these sites.
What do emergency preparedness
plans often lack?
They often lack a dedicated provider
and a proactive approach. Most master
service agreements we see in this
industry lack guaranteed support
language in the case of an emergency.
In this industry, it is always first come
first serve, so unless the organization is
guaranteed response, it runs the risk of
not having a supplier that can meet all
its demands in an emergency. They
need to get a site back into a revenue
generating mode as soon as possible.
Every hour counts.
We advise a proactive instead of a
reactive approach. As a supplier, it is
critical we get to know our customers.
When we develop a relationship with a
company, we get ingrained in their
corporate safety culture. In an
emergency it is always better to work
with someone you have communicated
with before, to have a strategic partner
who you know can augment your
capabilities, instead of opening up the
Yellow Pages or searching online for a
response contractor.
What obstacles do they often face?
The environmental, health and safety
divisions in companies understand the
importance of proactive preparedness
and they recognize the importance of
having dedicated support, but they get
a push-back from contracting a
dedicated support standby contract. Our
message is that a retainer approach is
the most effective way to prepare for a
contingency.
Unless the
organization is
guaranteed
response, it
runs the risk
of not having
a supplier that
can meet all
its demands in
an emergency
