Marc Tyler Jr.
*** I've been getting stick about having songs in the screenplay with no tune
behind them. So, I'm providing the list of instrumentals I used to write the
songs. Feel free to develop your own rhythm to how the song moves you.
Thanks.***

INT. JUNGLE - DAY
LOUD CHANTS emanate thru lush vegetation.
We take a TOUR through the canopy, passing nature and
wildlife on the jungle floor.
ANIMALS - decorate the jungle as we pass by: ELEPHANTS,
RHINOS, ANTELOPE, LEOPARDS, OKAPIS, REPTILES, MONKEYS and
BIRDS bask in their natural environment.
The chants grow louder. Suddenly, we descend upon...
APES, cheering chaotically for the performance! Gorillas,
orangutans, chimps, and bobonos tune in.
EXT. STAGE - DAY
On stage is a chimpanzee, YERK (17), the three time reigning
champion of the Great Ape Games -- flashy, cocky, self-
centered, everything that makes up an all-star jerk.
He SINGS.
“I’M BEAUTIFUL”
YERK
I’M THE TYPE THAT MAKES YOU STOP /
WHILE YOU’RE WALKING DOWN THE
STREET.
I’M THE HONEY ON YOUR TONGUE /
WHEN YOU NEED THAT SOMETHING SWEET.
I’M THE ANTS ON YOUR BANANA /
WHEN YOU NEED A SPECIAL TREAT.
He poses narcissistically.
YERK (CONT’D)
(speaking)
It’s me. Oh yes. I’m Beautiful.
Yerk’s really feeling the energy now. He prances around
stage, playing every part.
YERK (CONT’D)
I’M THE DRIP OF WATER /
WHEN YOU’RE GETTING TOO HOT.
I’M YOUR CUT IN LINE /
WHEN YOU LOST A CERTAIN SPOT.
I’M THE SUDDEN IDEA /
WHEN YOU THINK YOU FORGOT.
He poses again -- must be part of his routine.
YERK (CONT’D)
(speaking)
It’s me. Oh yes. I’m Beautiful.
BACK-UP SINGERS rise on stage, they SING.
The crowd goes into a frenzy!
CHORUS
YOU DON’T HAVE TO LIKE ME CAUSE,
...I’M BEAUTIFUL!
YERK
(speaking)
I’m Beautiful.
CHORUS
I DON’T NEED ANY GOOD LUCK.
CAUSE,
... I’M BEAUTIFUL!
YERK
(speaking)
I’m Beautiful.
Yerk points to a pretty chimp (SAAMYA) in the front row,
blowing her a kiss.
YERK (CONT’D)
I’M THE SIGN UP AHEAD /
WHEN YOU LOOK LIKE YOU’RE LOST.
I’M THE FREE ITEM IN YOUR HAND /
WHEN YOU KNEW THAT I COST.
I’M THE LINE OVER THERE /
YOU THOUGHT YOU COULDN’T CROSS.
Yerk eyes the big screen, checking out his good looks. He
smiles perfectly.
YERK (CONT’D)
(speaking)
It’s me. Oh yes. I’m Beautiful.
He parades across stage.
YERK (CONT’D)
I’M THE TIME THAT SLOWS DOWN /
WHEN YOU’RE HAVING FUN.
I’M YOUR LAST BITE TO EAT /
WHEN YOU THOUGHT YOU HAD NONE.
I’M THE ONE WALKING AROUND /
HOTTER THAN THE SUN.
2.
He strikes more poses. They’re actually pretty good.
YERK (CONT’D)
(speaking)
It’s me. Oh yes. I’m Beautiful.
ANGLE - A CHIMPANZEE
YERA aka “FLIP” (16) athletic, full of flair and vigor,

It’s Flip, grandpa.
GAMBA

(pointing to the family)
They can call you, Flip. I call you

(beat)
Got it...?
FLIP
Yes, grandpa.
GAMBA
Alright now! Arms loose?! Legs
bouncy?! Neck loose?!
Flip bounces around loosening up:

INT. THE RACE/ ANNOUNCERS DESK - DAY
We get our first look at JO-JO and BO-BO, the goofy identical
twin announcers for the race.
JO-JO
Hello--ooo primates! Welcome to
this year’s annual Great Ape Games,
brought to you exclusively on, The
Ban Chan. My name is Jo-jo, and
with me as always is my great
buddy, Bo-bo... Who’s sitting a
little too close.
Jo-jo moves Bo-bo’s chair, almost moving him out of frame. Bo-
bo pushes back. It’s brotherly love at its finest.
BO-BO
Thanks, Jo. What a great
performance by Yerk.
JO-JO
Let’s hope his race is as good as
his performance.
BO-BO
Got that one right. The race will
begin after this short break.
WITH FLIP
receiving a snug hug from Gamba.
GAMBA
Remember everything we went over.
Have fun and good luck.
AMINAH
Beat em’ up, Flip!
Flip rubs Aminah’s head, messing up her hair.
AMINAH (CONT’D)
(fixing it)
Hey...???
He looks to his mother. She nods her head in confidence. He
eyes his father. Kulo just stands there... no type of
motivation or encouragement.
5.
Yerk bumps Flip on the way to the starting line.
YERK
(arrogant)
Good luck. You’re gonna need it.
FLIP
(sportsman)
Good luck to you too.
YERK
I don’t need luck. I’m beautiful.
He walks off. Gamba eyes the big bully.
GAMBA
Don’t worry about that guy.
AT THE ANNOUNCERS DESK - MOMENTS LATER
JO-JO
And we’re back...
BO-BO
(excited)
I’ll tell you what, Jo! This year’s
race is a tough one -- A half mile
sprint thru the flat-grounds. A
half mile swim thru the Nana River.
And a half mile swing thru the
treetops... this should be awesome.
JO-JO
Not as awesome as the mango I took
from your breakfast earlier, Bo.
BO-BO
That was you? ...
Bo-bo jumps on Jo-jo while they’re recording. They fumble and
bumble around, making the camera go crazy. Jo-jo’s head pops
up...
JO-JO
(shouting)
And now down to the starting line.
Where the race is about to begin!
WITH FLIP
passing his competitors, walking to the starting line. Big
stocky GORILLAS, athletic CHIMPS & BOBONOS, and hairy
ORANGUTANS block his way.
6.
Flip’s not intimidated. He grabs a drink and takes his place.
Other racers fill in around him.
Yerk signs autographs and takes pictures before stepping to
the starting line. He lines up next to Flip. They eye one
another.
The RACE COORDINATOR approaches the line, megaphone in hand.
RACE COORDINATOR
The race is about to start. Places
please.
The racers are ready to go. They hunch over, ready to blast
off.
JO-JO (O.S.)
Looks like they’re ready to go
folks. Who will be crowned the next
Great Ape?! ...
RACE COORDINATOR
On the third, Ahh!
(get ready...)
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ahh-ahh-AHH!
They take off!
BO-BO (O.S.)
And they’re off!
We follow the racers along the first section of the race --
The Flat Grounds. A half mile sprint filled with BUSHES,
OBSTACLES, and CRATERS.
Apes competitively bump one another trying to gain an edge.
AN ORANGUTAN
falls over an obstacle... he tumbles, taking other apes down
with him.
BO-BO (O.S.) (CONT’D)
Uh-oh! Dominos...
WITH FLIP
leaping over bushes and obstacles. He makes it look so easy.
WITH YERK
breezing thru the first section of the race. He’s in his
zone.
7.
ANGLE - THE NANA RIVER
four and a half feet of water, with a strong current. The
section known as -- The River Cross.
SPLASH! SPLASH! SPLASH! Apes jump in the water.
A GORILLA
tries to swim but sinks instantly.
JO-JO (O.S.)
Eat much? ...
Racers struggle to make it across the treacherous river. The
current drags a CHIMP out of frame.
WITH FLIP
half swimming -- half running thru the river, pushing into
first place.
WITH YERK
catching a glimpse of Flip leading the pack.
YERK
Get back here! ...
A BOBONO
notices something is chasing him as he’s running thru the
river. CROCODILE EYES ascend from underwater. He SCREAMS.
WITH FLIP
fresh out the water. He looks up to the canopy and starts
climbing. Other racers run up and follow suit.
THE CROWD
CHEERS as apes exit the water towards the next stage.
ANGLE - THE TREETOPS
the final section of the race. A trail of thick tree boughs
and vines that go on for miles.
(CONT’D)
8.
JO-JO (O.S.)
The next section is -- The
Treetops. A half mile branch to
branch swing thru the highest peak
of the jungle.
Apes swing thru the trees, some quicker than others.
WITH FLIP’S FAMILY
in the crowd, searching for Flip in the mix of racers.
AMINAH
(pointing him out)
There goes Flip! Go, Flip!
They watch in awe, cheering him on to victory.
WITH FLIP
leading the pack through the treetops.
JO-JO (O.S.)
And, it’s Flip leading the pack
into the final stretch, followed by
Yerk!
Flip swings faster and faster, gaining a slight gap between
him and the others.
Behind him, Yerk fights to catch Flip.
YERK
I’m right behind you! Here I come!
BO-BO (O.S.)
(excited)
Flip’s really moving! He--
Flip pushes it into overdrive. He can see his victory ahead.
He grabs for the next--
TREE BOUGH
--when his hand slips off. He tries to grab a hold of
anything...but he can’t. Flip’s on a free fall towards the
ground!
JO-JO (O.S.)
--slips and falls...
(worried)
Oh, no! Something please stop
him...
9.
WITH FLIP’S FAMILY
joy turns into agonizing horror as they watch Flip fall
slowly from the canopy.
WITH FLIP
falling through the trees, trying to grab anything to save
his life... He can’t.
...BOOM! Flip’s body hits the ground with a THUD. He lies
motionless.
ANGLE - THE CROWD
GASP turning their heads...
WITH FLIP’S FAMILY
SCREAMING frantically:
LEWA
(calling)
Flip!!! Someone get help!
KULO
(to Lewa)
Stay here with Aminah. C’mon, dad!
Kulo and Gamba run to Flip’s aid.
BO-BO (O.S.)
(concerned)
Oh, no... Hopefully he’s okay,
folks.
JO-JO (O.S.)
Help is on the way...
FLIP’S POV
Fuzzy, distorted... Kulo and Gamba ENTER FRAME and everything
goes--
BLACK...
INT. REVIVAL CENTER - FLIP’S HUT - DAY
Flip lies asleep in a bed of leaves and sticks, wrapped like
a mummy.
10.
The nurse (SAAMYA) enters his hut, accidently dropping a tray
of food...BANG! It hits the floor. She rushes to pick it up.
Flip’s eyes pop open--
FLIP
(startled)
Where am I?!
What’s going on...?!
He struggles to move his body, wincing with every movement.
SAAMYA
(calming him down)
--Lay still, Flip. You’re hurt bad.
Sorry about all the noise.
FLIP
(confused)
...what are you talking about?
A VOICE comes out of nowhere. Let’s call it INNER FLIP.
INNER FLIP
The wraps, dummy. What are ya blind
too?
FLIP
No.
Saamya eyes Flip. She didn’t ask him anything. Flip squinches
his eyes, slightly blind.
FLIP (CONT’D)
Saamya? ... Is that you?
SAAMYA
Yes, it’s me. You broke bones, not
your eyes.
FLIP
Huh? ...
Saamya looks at Flip like he’s crazy.
SAAMYA
Flip, you fell during the race. You
don’t remember?
INNER FLIP
Look down, genius. Look what you
did to us.
11.
Flip looks down at his bandages. His mind is fogged. He can
remember a thing.
FLIP
No.
SAAMYA
(gentle)
You fell from the treetops in the
last stage of the race, Flip.
Flip hangs his head in shame. Saamya sees she shouldn’t have
told him. She changes the subject.
INNER FLIP
(sarcastic)
Way to go, buddy.
Flip looks around. No one but him and Saamya.
FLIP
You don’t hear that?
SAAMYA
Hear what? Are you hungry? Do you
want some mashed nanas?
Flip weirdly check his surroundings again.
FLIP
...yeah.
Saamya grabs a seat next to Flip. She picks up a bowl of ant
banana mash, attempting to feed him.
SAAMYA
Okay, open up...
Flip opens wide, but closes to speak as she puts the spoon to
his mouth. Saamya rubs banana mash all over his face. They
share a good laugh. Saamya tries to give him another spoonful
but Flip’s heavy grin stops her.
SAAMYA (CONT’D)
What? Why are you smiling?
FLIP
Do you remember the last time we
ate lunch together?
12.
INT. JUNGLE - (FLASHBACK) - YEARS AGO
A young Flip (10) and Saamya (10), share a meal in a tree.
While Saamya eats, all Flip can see is HEARTS all around her.
Flip kisses Saamya. She jumps back--
SAAMYA
(running away)
Eeuwww!!!
FLIP
(regretful)
Sorry...
BACK TO SCENE...
Saamya suddenly catches amnesia. She lies thru her teeth.
SAAMYA
No.
Flip still has the cheesy grin on his face. There’s a moment.
SAAMYA (CONT’D)
(smiling back)
Open up.
Yerk enters the hut showing off his medal. He takes a good
look at Flip.
YERK
(frowning his face up)
Oo-ooh... that’s bad.
(to Saamya)
You ready, babe? ...
Yerk eyes them suspiciously, noticing something’s going on.
YERK (CONT’D)
(to Flip)
Hey... you’re not pushing up on my
girl or anything are you, brokey?
(to Saamya)
C’mon, babe, let’s go...
Saamya spins around in her chair.
SAAMYA
I’m not your babe.
She stands up and waves bye to Flip. He smiles back. She
exits.
13.
Yerk peeks around the corner to see if she’s gone. He looks
back to Flip.
YERK
Hey, good luck with that butterfly
thing you got going on, bro.
(insulting)
Slip, right? Ahhh.. forget it,
later.
INT. JUNGLE - DAY
Animals bask in the monstrously dense green wonderland
dappled by sunlight. It buzzes with a melody of sounds.
An AARDVARK (Artie) wearing sunglasses, sticks his tongue in
an anthill. Nearby, OKAPIS and PYGMY HIPPOS feed on tree
leaves and buds. Artie’s tongue pops from underground, an
okapi bites it.
ARTIE
Ouch!!!
Artie jumps back...right onto an ELEPHANTS salad. The
elephant bops Artie on the head, then strikes him like a tee
off. He flies across the jungle.
INT. REVIVAL CENTER - FLIP’S HUT - LATER ON
Flip’s staring at a BUTTERFLY poster on the wall. It reads,
“Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it
became a butterfly.”
INNER FLIP
So what do we do now? Just stare at
this meaningless poster. You can
never become a butterfly. You’re a
loser.
Flip nods his head side to side trying to shut the voice up.
FLIP
Shut up...shut up.
Suddenly, Flip’s FAMILY enters his hut, showering him with
love. They’re oddly surprised by the mummy outfit.
LEWA
Awww, look at my baby...
14.
AMINAH
(towards Flip)
Whoa.. cool!
GAMBA
How are you feeling, Yera?
FLIP
Hey, guys. I’m okay.
INNER FLIP
...not.
Aminah hovers over Flip’s food--
AMINAH
(hungry)
O-oohh -- banana mash with ants.
KULO
Stop, Aminah. That’s Flip’s food.
FLIP
It’s okay. She can have it.
Aminah snatches the bowl and digs in.
Kulo silently walks around examining Flip’s body. Something
is on his mind. He can’t hold it in anymore:
KULO
See.. This wouldn’t of happened if
you just listened to me. I told
you, forget about that race and
become the hunter I know you are.
You want to waste your time with
this silly race. We’re not built
for this type of stuff.
FLIP
I’m not a hunter, dad.
KULO
I just don’t understand you. You
could of died.. you risk your life
for--
LEWA
(interrupting)
--Leave it alone, Kulo.
Kulo storms out. It’s an odd silence in the hut now --except
for the SLURPING of Aminah.
15.
INNER FLIP
What’s his deal?
LEWA
Don’t worry about him.
GAMBA
It’s just a setback. No worries.
Gamba looks around the room, deja vu. He gets a chill. Lewa
pats him on the shoulder.
GAMBA (CONT’D)
Being in here again gives me the
willies.
EXT. REVIVAL CENTER - NIGHT
LIGHTNING BUGS stuffed in cylinders shine bright, lighting up
the whole center.
In a nearby tree, TWO OWLS hangout. One has a SQUIRREL
dangling from his claws, futilely reaching for a nearby
branch.
OWL #1
(disbelief)
And then get this... she told me to
stay there and watch the kids.
I said, “Hoot?”
OWL #2
(laughing)
Ho-oot! I know that’s right.
INT. FLIP’S HUT - NIGHT
Flip’s in his bed having a bad dream:
INT. JUNGLE - (FLASHBACK)- THE RACE - (DREAM SEQUENCE)
Flip’s moving through the treetops -- He swings faster and
faster, tasting the victory ahead. He grabs the next-
TREE BRANCH
--when his hand almost crushes a CATERPILLAR with his head on
it. It SCREAMS! Flip loses his grip. He’s on a free fall
towards the ground! He can see his death coming, all of a
sudden--
16.
ANGLE - FLIP
--wakes up, believe he’s falling:
FLIP
(petrified)
Ahhhh!!!!
He stops, noticing it was a dream. But that doesn’t stop his
heart from almost beating out his chest.
LATER ON THAT NIGHT...
Saamya enters Flip’s hut. He’s wide-eyed and wide awake--
SAAMYA
Flip, what are you doing up? You
should be resting.
FLIP
(vulnerable)
I keep dreaming I’m falling.
(then;)
I’m scared to go back to sleep...
Can you stay with me until I do?
She smiles, thinking it’s sweet.
SAAMYA
Sure.
She grabs a chair and sits next to Flip’s bed. Saamya lightly
strokes his hand as he lies there. It only takes a second --
Flip’s out cold. She stares at him, confused.
-EXT. JUNGLE - NIGHT. Stars TWINKLE gently in the midnight
sky.
-EXT. JUNGLE - DAY. The jungle shines in the sunlight... then
darkens as the sky clouds over. It starts to rain.
-EXT. A RIVER - DAY. Rises higher and higher, as the rain
continues to pour.
-EXT. THE SKY - NIGHT. Lightning flashes. The wind blows as
storms pass through.
-EXT. MOON - NIGHT. Waning, peaceful -- It sets.
17.
EXT. JUNGLE - DAWN - WEEKS LATER
The sun slowly rises over the foggy African jungle. Water
drips off the dewed vegetation as it glistens in the
sunlight. BIRDS fly in formation thru the sky.
INT. FLIP’S HUT - MORNING
Saamya enters with a huge smile. She’s hiding something
behind her back. Flip smiles back. There’s a connection
between the two. Suddenly, she pulls out a huge JAGGED ROCK.
SAAMYA
You ready? ...
FLIP
(startled)
For what?! The execution?!
SAAMYA
To get your cast off, banana brain.
She holds the rock up.
FLIP
Are you qualified to do this?
Shouldn’t the doctor be in here?
SAAMYA
Nope... he told me to do it.
Saamya edges towards Flip. He looks terrified. Too bad he
can’t move.
INNER FLIP
Whoa! Whoa! Not our legs! Run!
FLIP
(scared)
--wait-wait-wait-wait-wait...
Let’s talk about this real quick.
SAAMYA
Stop being such a wimp. Sit still.
Flip closes his eyes and hopes for the best.
INNER FLIP
...if we die it’s your fault.
Saamya splits the cast open, removing piece by piece, freeing
Flip from captivity.
18.
SAAMYA
...see -- done already...
FLIP
(relieved)
Oo-oohh... that feels good. I
didn’t know air could feel so good.
Saamya covers her nose:
SAAMYA
Let’s get you a bath, stinky.
EXT. REVIVAL CENTER - RIVERSIDE - A SHORT TIME LATER
Saamya washes Flip in the local river. She rubs and scrubs
him vigorously--
FLIP
(protesting)
Hey! Ow! Oh! Ouch! I can do it
myself.
SAAMYA
Hold still, Flip. You smell like a
gorilla.
A GORILLA next to Flip covers her nose.
GORILLA
She’s right.
INT. FLIP’S COMMUNITY - DAY
Chimpanzees hang along a well shaded area, tucked away from
the afternoon sun.
WITH AMINAH
attempting to catch a butterfly. She SINGS.
“BUTTERFLY”
AMINAH
IF I COULD TURN INTO A BUTTERFLY.
I’D SPREAD MY WINGS AND FLY TODAY.
NO ONE TO SAY, “YOU CAN’T GO HERE.”
Aminah almost catches the butterfly. It evades her by
milliseconds, flying away.
19.
AMINAH (CONT’D)
I’M CLEAR AS DAY / I’LL FLY AWAY.
FLOATING UP HIGH IN THE WIND
MAKE A STOP / I’M GONE AGAIN.
The butterfly stops on a nearby flower. Aminah slowly
approaches, but gets too close, it flies away again. She
chases after:
AMINAH (CONT’D)
IF I COULD TURN INTO A BUTTERFLY.
I’D SPREAD MY WINGS AND FLY TODAY.
Aminah tires out. She glumly walks around, as the butterfly
slowly gravitates towards her.
AMINAH (CONT’D)
(soft)
IF I COULD TURN INTO A BUTTERFLY --
I COULD COME AND GO AS I MAY --
Suddenly, she blasts’ off with a bursts of energy, chasing
the butterfly around and around, just missing.
AMINAH (CONT’D)
FLOATING AND SOARING.
DISCOVERING / EXPLORING.
MY COLORS, ADORING.
WALKING THAT’S BORING!
IF I COULD TURN INTO A BUTTERFLY.
I’D SPREAD MY WINGS AND FLY TODAY.
ALL I HEAR IS THE WIND /
I COME AND GO, AS I MAY...
(hoping)
...I’LL FLY ONE DAY.
...I’LL SPREAD MY WINGS.
Aminah falls down from exhaustion. The BUTTERFLY lands on
her.
AMINAH (CONT’D)
(suttle)
IF I COULD TURN INTO A BUTTERFLY...
IF I COULD TURN INTO A BUTTERFLY...
IF I COULD TURN INTO A BUTTERFLY...
WITH KULO
relaxing against a tree, watching Aminah. He looks slightly
bothered. Lewa ENTERS FRAME and sits.
LEWA
They grow up so fast, don’t they?
20.
KULO
Yeah. It’s like she was just born
yesterday.
LEWA
...time flies.
A FLY passes by. She grabs it and eats it.
KULO
At least at her age, she listens to
you. I don’t know what to do about
Flip.
LEWA
Flip is old enough to make his own
decisions.
Kulo looks off into the distance, knowing she’s right.
KULO
But, what if they’re not the best
ones for him? He’s not cut out to
be a great ape. He’s a hunter.
That’s what he’s good at.
LEWA
So, what are you saying?
KULO
He’s not tough enough and you know
it, Lewa.
(empathizing)
I wasn’t tough enough.
LEWA
Well, he isn’t you, Kulo. You’re
forgetting he’s half of me too.
INT. REVIVAL CENTER - REHAB ROOM - LATER
A wonderful room filled with OBSTACLES, HOOPS, WEIGHTS, and
the LOG RUN!
SAAMYA (O.S.)
C’mon, Flip. Three more!
Flip’s lifting MINI LOGS resembling dumbbells, testing his
strength--
FLIP
Three-two-one!
21.
SAAMYA
Good job!
ANGLE - FLIP
on the Log Run! A log placed in a pool of water, testing
balance and strength.
INNER FLIP
You’re gonna fall right in.
FLIP
No, I’m not.
Saamya eyes Flip, oblivious to his imaginary friend. She
releases the log. Flip has trouble balancing.
SAAMYA
Start slow and build up speed. Be
careful you don’t run too fast --
too quick.
FLIP
Gotcha.
Flip starts out slowly. The log spins. It picks up speed. He
moves faster. He’s in an all out sprint. Suddenly, it’s too
fast! Flip falls. The log flips him over, and over, and over!
FLIP (CONT’D)
Whoa-whoa-whoa!!! Stop this thing!
Saamya laughs, amused.
Flip does pull-ups on a bar, testing his upper body strength.
He pulls himself up with ease.
SAAMYA
Keep going, Flip! At this rate,
you’ll be back in no time.
FLIP
(animated)
I feel great. I haven’t felt this
good in a long time.
He jumps down, checking out his physique. Saamya chuckles.
SAAMYA
C’mon, it’s lunch time.
22.
EXT. JUNGLE - DAY
We look out over the jungle as the sun crests the far horizon
-- hazy, humid.
INT. REVIVAL CENTER - FLIP’S HUT - LATER
Flip and Saamya share a delicious healthy lunch. Flip takes a
bite of a horned melon.
FLIP
Awesome melon.
SAAMYA
They’re the best ones in the whole
jungle. I pick em myself.
Saamya concentrates more on Flip than the meal.
SAAMYA (CONT’D)
So, what you’re going to do when
you get out of here?
Flip can’t get the papaya out of the peel. He fidgets with
it.
FLIP
(unsure)
Umm... I don’t know.
She doesn’t like that answer too much.
SAAMYA
What do you mean you don’t know?
You’re going to compete for the
games, right?
BAM! The papaya shoots out right in Flip’s face. He grabs a
towel.
FLIP
...maybe.
INNER FLIP
Yeah, we’ll just lose again.
Saamya smacks the towel out of Flip’s hand as he’s cleaning
his face.
SAAMYA
Maybe, Flip?!
23.
FLIP
I mean... I don’t know... I’m good
at other things I think.
He shouldn’t have said that. Saamya places her spoon back in
her banana mash. She’s all ears.
SAAMYA
Like what? ...
FLIP
Uhhh-- making animals laugh.
SAAMYA
Tell me a joke.
FLIP
What kinda key opens up a banana?
SAAMYA
I don’t know, what?
FLIP
A mon-key.
SFX: BAD JOKE DRUM ROLL
She stares, unimpressed.
SAAMYA
Next.
FLIP
(upbeat)
I can do tricks.
Flip grabs the BOWLS they’re eating out of and juggles them --
He starts off pretty good, until one of the BOWLS SPLATS on
his head! Banana mash runs down his face--
SAAMYA
(sarcastic)
Yeah, these talents are great...
....next.
She points to the banana mash--
SAAMYA (CONT’D)
And you owe me some more of that.
FLIP
(persistent)
Alright.
24.
Flip grabs THREE BOWLS. This time he places a NUT underneath
one of the bowls. He shifts and moves the bowls round and
around.
FLIP (CONT’D)
Guess which bowl the nut is under.
Saamya takes a second to think. She flips over the bowl on
the far right -- and there’s the nut.
FLIP (CONT’D)
(desperate)
Come-on!!!
Flip desperately throws his head into his arms, pouting.
SAAMYA
Face it, Flip. The games are the
only thing you know. It’s what you
do best.
FLIP
You’re right... But, I don’t know
if that’s what I want to do
anymore.
INNER FLIP
...say it, I’m a chicken.
Saamya hides her emotions. She walks to the window, looking
out at the pretty birds.
SAAMYA
Why not? ...
FLIP
I don’t know. What happens if I
fall again? What happens if I hurt
myself even worse?
She turns around, disappointed.
SAAMYA
You can’t live in fear. You don’t
know if you’re going to fall again
if you don’t try. Not trying is the
same as falling.
FLIP
No, it’s not. It’s saving me from
the fall. You don’t get it.
25.
SAAMYA
(straightforward)
I do get it. You’re scared to try
again because you’re afraid you’ll
got knocked down. If it was me, I’d
go bananas for something I want.
She definitely pushed one of Flip’s buttons. He hits the
table in frustration.
FLIP
(defensive; upset)
What do you know?! You didn’t fall
from the treetops, okay?!
SAAMYA
You’re right.
FLIP
I know I’m right.
Saamya grabs her things and storms out the hut.
SAAMYA
Whatever, Flip. Have fun with your
magic tricks.
Flip crosses his arms, thinking he’s right by telling her
off.
INNER FLIP
...you told her.
FLIP
What does she know anyway? I’m not
scared of anything...
BANG! A bowl hits the floor.. Flip jumps, scared for his
life.
EXT. REVIVAL CENTER - NIGHT
The TWO OWLS are back in the same tree. But now, Owl #1 has
bandages and a pirate patch over his wounds.
OWL #1
And I told her, look here! I do
what I feel woman. Now, “Owl-ll” be
back.
26.
OWL #2
(laughing)
Hoot-hoot-hoot-hoot-hoot! ...
And what did she say? ...
OWL #1
She didn’t say anything. She just
started swinging.
INT. JUNGLE - (PREMONITION) - DAY
Flip’s running away from this GIGANTIC bird. KA-KAUH! The
bird opens wide. Flip’s bird food! Suddenly...
INT. REVIVAL CENTER - FLIP’S HUT - NIGHT
Flip wakes up in a cold sweat, like he’s been swimming. He
hyperventilates scared for his life. He looks around.
FLIP
...what the heck was that?
EXT. SWAMP - MORNING
A BIRD perches on a branch overlooking the dirty swamp. He
SINGS and SINGS for everyone to rise and shine on this
beautiful morning. A CROCODILE jumps up and swallows him
whole, shutting him up. He turns on his back and goes back to
sleep.
INT. REVIVAL CENTER - FLIP’S HUT - MORNING
Saamya enters the hut with a smile. Her face goes blank after
she realizes the room is empty. She finds a note on the table
from Flip. She opens it.
INT. JUNGLE - DAY
Welcome to Reptile World -- exotic, damp, dangerous.
SNAKES, CROCODILES, and LIZARDS linger throughout the lush
vegetation and river.
TURTLES play tag riverside. Everything seems fast paced to
them, but to anyone else it’s super slow. Flip walks thru the
game in deep thought.
INNER FLIP
Hey! Hey?! Are you listening to me?
27.
FLIP
...shut up. Why can’t you just go
away?
TWO turtles zooms past.
TURTLE #1
Move it, slowpoke!
TURTLE #2
Where’s your blinker, idiot?!
Flip ignores them, fixated on his conversation. BOOM! Flip’s
bumped by a turtle.
INNER FLIP
I’ll go away when you no longer
need me.
FLIP
What does that mean?
INNER FLIP
Outside your comfort zone is where
the magic happens.
INT. FLIP’S COMMUNITY - DAY
It’s a lovely day in the community. Chimps gather food for
breakfast and swing throughout the trees. Others are lined up
for the daily groom.
Aminah runs around with her friends playing tag. She stops at
the sight of her brother in the distance.
AMINAH
Flip!!
Aminah runs and jumps into Flip’s arms. They walk thru a
cheering pack.
CHIMP #1
Good to see you back, Flip.
CHIMP #2
Way to tuff it off, champ.
FLIP
Thanks, guys. I will be competing
in the games again.
Flip tosses Aminah in the air, showing off. The chimps nod in
approval, happy someone is representing their pack.
28.
INNER FLIP
...you just lied to these guys.
EXT. JUNGLE - SUNSET
The sun leaves a gentle glow over the horizon. Light softly
fades as nighttime approaches. The jungle HUMS with a
diversity of life.
AH-HHH! AH-HHH!
MONKEYS make themselves known in the trees. A SWARM of
naughty blue monkeys tease a guenon, tossing around his
backpack. He futilely chases after with no luck.
GUENON
Quit it, guys! Give me it back! I
need that!
The guenon grabs a hold of the bag as it falls before a
bigger blue monkey. The guenon attempts to snatch it away but
is punched in the face. He cowers back. The blue monkey
tosses his inhaler against his chest.
BLUE MONKEY
Thanks, loser.
The blue monkeys take off into the trees. The scared guenon
takes a puff of the inhaler.
INT. JUNGLE - CREEK
Animals gather at the creek for a drink. A MANDRILL pushes
some FOREST HOGS into the water before falling in himself.
His monkey friends laugh him out.
Flip and Gamba enter frame.
FLIP
...what’s a comfort zone, grandpa?
Gamba stops and turns back. He points to something in the
tree.
GAMBA
...a cocoon. A place where you no
longer learn, no longer grow.
Flip turns and stares at it.
29.
FLIP
...so, if you stay in it, what
happens?
GAMBA
Nothing. But, if you leave it, the
opportunities are limitless.
Gamba playfully rubs Flip on the head. Flip knocks his hand
away.
FLIP
Okay -- One more thing...
GAMBA
...yeah?
FLIP
(upbeat)
I bet you can’t beat me to the
waterfall!
Flip takes off. Gamba chases after.
Gamba swings in the trees while Flip stays on ground. It’s
neck and neck.
GAMBA
Geez! You’re fast..
Flip’s almost to the WATERFALL when, Gamba drops down,
cutting him off:
GAMBA (CONT’D)
(gloating)
First place!! Whew!!
FLIP
You cheated!
INNER FLIP
You just let grandpa beat you.
GAMBA
You didn’t say there were rules.
Gamba dances around, gloating.
EXT. LOOK POINT - MOMENTS LATER
Flip and Gamba watch the cascading water drop below --
silent, serene. Taking in this special moment, Gamba grabs
his...
30.
LUCKY NECKLACE
-- a string necklace, with a banana shaped SHINY ROCK
attached to it. He hands it to Flip:
GAMBA
(handing necklace over)
Here, I want you to have something.
FLIP
Grandpa, this is your--
GAMBA
Lucky necklace -- I know... I want
you to have it. It’s lucky, ya’
know? ...
FLIP
Thanks.
Flip ties it around his neck. Mesmerized, they gaze at the
majestic view of the falls.
GAMBA
Beautiful, isn’t it? ...
FLIP
...sure is.
INT. FLIP’S COMMUNITY - NIGHT
It’s a feast! FRUITS, NUTS, FIGS, INSECT BOWLS, and BUSHPIGS
lie across a huge tree stump. The whole community chows down
on the buffet.
KULO
Flip, can you pass me the
flatworms?
FLIP
(busy)
Can’t...
BANG! Gamba flicks Flip in the head--
FLIP (CONT’D)
Ouch!! What’d you flick me for,
grandpa?
GAMBA
Never say you can’t do something.
Flip rubs his head and passes Kulo the flatworms.
31.
INNER FLIP
Why does he always do that?!
ANGLE - THE MOON
illuminates in the night sky.
WE HEAR: A HUGE BURP followed by another and another.
Suddenly, it’s a SYMPHONY.
AMINAH (O.S.)
Eeuwww...
INT. JUNGLE - MORNING
Flip and Gamba train as the sun rises. They hop over LOGS and
BUSHES on the jungle floor --
SPLASH! ... Into the river they jump. They push through the
water, creating waves as they run --
UP to the canopy they climb. Gamba pushes forward thru the
trees...
Flip’s right behind him, when...
-INT. JUNGLE - (FLASHBACK)- THE RACE
Flip grabs for the next TREE BRANCH when his hand slips off.
He’s falling!!!
INT. JUNGLE - SECONDS LATER - (PRESENT)
Terrified, Flip hangs on the branch, frozen--
FLIP
(panicking)
Grandpa! Grandpa!
INNER FLIP
Ahhh!!!
Gamba looks back at the hanging Flip. He goes back to help.
GAMBA
(calling back)
Yera, what are ya’ doing?!
FLIP
I need your help.. Please! I’m
scared.. I can’t move..
32.
Gamba reaches Flip. He doesn’t see a problem.
GAMBA
Just grab the branch, Yera.
INNER FLIP
What are you crazy?
Flip won’t budge. Not even an inch. Gamba curiously stares at
his grandson.
FLIP
I’m gonna fall, grandpa... help
please.
GAMBA
Calm down. We’ll go down the same
way we came up.
Gamba slowly helps Flip to the ground. Branch by branch.
Bough by bough, they descend from the canopy.
GAMBA (CONT’D)
There you go.. One by one, Yera.
Flip cautiously places his feet on the jungle floor. He sighs
in relief. Gamba takes a good look at him.
GAMBA (CONT’D)
What’s wrong with you? You goin’
bananas, boy?
FLIP
(unsure)
I don’t know.. I saw myself fall
before I grabbed the branch and I
froze.
(panicking)
...something’s wrong with me.
Flip anxiously paces back and forth. His mind is racing.
GAMBA
Nothing’s wrong with you, Yera.
Just a minor setback.
FLIP
(exasperated)
You always say that. It’s not just
a setback.
(worried)
This is a major problem!
Flip walks away. Gamba calls:
33.
GAMBA
That’s the wrong way to beat it,
Yera! Face your fears head on!!!
Gamba watches as Flip walks away. Flip slaps some lianas out
his way. A SLOTH falls down. Gamba lets out a nasty COUGH.
INT. YERK’S RESIDENCE - DAY
Yerk’s laid back, being handfeed grapes by hotties. He’s the
king of all kings.
YERK
This is the life...
He takes a couple bites. His assistant, (TUTO) ENTERS FRAME
with a drink.
TUTO
(hands it to Yerk)
Here you go, sir.
YERK
(mouthful of grapes)
Thank you, Tuto.
Yerk snatches the drink off the tray, knocking the tray to
the floor. Tuto picks it up.
TUTO
Sir, I know I shouldn’t bring this
up, but don’t you think you should
start training soon?
YERK
Training..? Who needs training? I’m
the four time reigning champ.
Yerk points to his medals. The girls CHANT.
GIRLS
Champ! Champ! Champ!
Next, Yerk points to his beautiful chiseled face.
YERK
Does something like this need
practice?
--He interrupts before Tuto can answer.
YERK (CONT’D)
--No.. It’s beautiful on its own.
34.
GIRLS (O.S.)
He’s so handsome. Gorgeous.
Yerk nonchalantly brushes them off. But, wants to keep them
coming.
YERK
(to girls)
O-ooh.. Stop it...
TUTO
You’re right. Sorry, sir.
YERK
Good. Now scratch me, I itchy.
Yerk turns over. Tuto scratches his back.
INT. FLIP’S COMMUNITY - DAY
A hobo bag filled with goodies and items is placed down on a
table. Flip wipes his eyes and throws the bag over his
shoulder. Gamba enters.
INNER FLIP
...let’s get outta here.
Gamba stands in front of the door, blocking Flip’s escape
route.
GAMBA
Going somewhere? ...
FLIP
Just for a little walk.
Gamba peeks over at the bag. Flip hides it behind his back.
GAMBA
A walk, huh? That’s a lot of food
for a little walk.
He’s caught red handed. Flip sets the bag down.
FLIP
I’m just going away for a while,
Grandpa.
GAMBA
For what?
(reassuring)
Yera, there’s nothing wrong with
you.
35.
Flip’s emotions get the best of him. Tears trickle down his
cheeks.
FLIP
Grandpa, I’ve never been so
confused in my life. I can’t climb.
I’m having crazy dreams. This voice
keeps talking to me.
Gamba grips Flip by the shoulders, trying to calm him down.
Flip breaks loose.
GAMBA
And you think leaving is going to
solve that?
FLIP
I don’t know. But it’s time for
this caterpillar to become a
butterfly.
Gamba’s lost. He looks to Flip for a clue.
GAMBA
What the heck does that mean?
FLIP
It means, this is my comfort zone.
My cocoon. It’s time I step out.
Flip eyes his grandpa and picks up the hobo bag. He walks
over and gives Gamba a strong loving hug. Gamba’s stunned. He
just takes a deep breath and watches Flip exit.
GAMBA
Good luck, Yera.
Flip shows him the lucky necklace.
EXT. JUNGLE - LATER
The sun crowns the jungle skyline with dazzling rays shooting
behind thick overgrown trees. A SKYWRITING PLANE flies thru
the sky leaving, “Welcome to the jungle” left behind.
INT. JUNGLE
A pack of RHINOS frolic in thin underbrush. A KID RHINO shows
off his monstrously HUGE HORN.
36.
KID RHINO
(super excited)
Look, it grew in! See it! Look!
MOMMY/DADDY RHINO
Whoa! Look at that thing.
RHINO #1
(shocked)
That’s the horniest kid I’ve ever
seen in my life.
DADDY RHINO
(showing off his horn)
Yeah... He gets it from me.
WITH FLIP...
trudging thru foliage so dense, the trees lost track of whose
leaves are whose. He splits thru a tangled maze of creepers
and bushes.
FLIP
(questioning himself)
What are you looking for?
(beat)
This is stupid. Maybe I should go
back...
INNER FLIP
Yeah, genius. What are we doing out
here? Let’s go back.
He glances back.
FLIP
(confident)
No.. I’m not giving up.
He keeps moving.
INT. FLIP’S COMMUNITY - LATER ON
Chimpanzees frolic throughout the jungle floor and branchy
trees.
Saamya approaches Lewa as she’s grooming Aminah. Aminah
protest every second of it.
SAAMYA
Hey, guys! Lewa, is Flip around?
37.
LEWA
No. I haven’t seen him since this
morning.
AMINAH
He was training with grandpa.
SAAMYA
(excited)
Good job Flip.
Lewa looks over. She spots Gamba hanging by some yummy fruit
bearing trees.
LEWA
Saamya, Gamba’s over there by the
fruitees. He’ll know where Flip is.
SAAMYA
Okay, thanks... Bye, guys!
AMINAH
Bye, sis...
WITH GAMBA
sitting on a tree looking out into the distant sun. Saamya
approaches behind.
SAAMYA
Excuse me, Gamba...
Gamba turns around. He smiles at the sight of Saamya. She
smiles innocently, still that cute kid.
GAMBA
Hey, Saamya. How are you?
SAAMYA
Good. Do you by chance know where
Flip is?
GAMBA
He’s gone.
Saamya’s disappointed she just missed him.
SAAMYA
When is he coming back?
GAMBA
(distant)
I don’t know.
38.
Saamya’s confused. She holds the note up that Flip wrote her.
SAAMYA
So... he’s gone -- gone?
INT. JUNGLE - LATER
Clusters of beautiful flowers hang off bushes and trees. Rays
of sun dapple the jungle floor, creating a laser show of
light and colors.
WITH FLIP
walking through areas he’s never seen before. His eyes light
up with awe. He glances in every direction, lost. He SINGS.
“LOST”
FLIP
WALKING ON THIS LONELY ROAD.
NO ONE WITH ME, ON MY OWN.
EVERYTHING I NEED RIGHT HERE.
LEFT MY NEST TO FACE MY FEARS.
-We see the entirety of the vast African jungle.
TRUDGING THRU THIS GREAT BIG
JUNGLE.
A WAR’S GOING ON / I’M READY TO
RUMBLE.
ON THIS PATH I HOPE WE CROSS /
FIND THE NEW ME, CAUSE I’M SO LOST.
INT. FLIP’S BODY - We see his BRAIN working on something.
-fuzzy, distorted -- a PICTURE of him winning the games
clears.
FLIP (CONT’D)
(REPEAT 2x)
LOOKING DEEP INSIDE OF ME.
TRYING TO FIND WHERE I’LL BE /
IF I KEEP MOVING THIS WAY /
I HOPE TO FIND MYSELF ONE DAY.
EXT. JUNGLE - Step by step, he goes deeper into the jungle --
deeper into the unknown...
39.
FLIP (CONT’D)
(questioning)
PLEASE TELL ME WHERE I’M
GOING? ...
PLEASE TELL ME WHERE I’M
GOING? ...
CAUSE I DON’T KNOW... NO!
CHORUS
(answering)
... CAUSE I DONT KNOW.
... DO YOU KNOW?
-Flip looks to the sky, a flock of BIRDS cross frame.
FLIP (CONT’D)
LOOKING TOWARDS THIS BIG BLUE SKY.
SPREAD MY WINGS AND I CAN FLY /
IF I WAS A BIRD THAT IS /
BUT I’M AN APE WITH FURRY SKIN.
THAT DOESN’T MEAN THAT I CAN’T SOAR
COURAGE OF A LION / HEAR ME ROAR.
OPEN MY EYES NOW I CAN SEE /
WHAT I WANT AND WHERE I’LL BE.
-Flip sculpts a CLAY STATUE of himself. It resembles a Rocky
Balboa statue -- Arms hoisted in the air:
FLIP (CONT’D)
THROW ALL OF MY FEARS AWAY.
MOLD MY FUTURE LIKE THIS CLAY.
I’M GOING TO SUCCEED ANYWAY /
I DON’T REALLY CARE ABOUT
WHAT THEY SAY--
-Flip visualizes Yerk’s face on the statue. He kicks it,
shattering it into pieces.
FLIP (CONT’D)
--WHAT THEY THINK OR WHAT THEY DO /
THAT SEPARATES ME FROM YOU.
ON THIS PATH I HOPE WE CROSS /
FIND THE NEW ME, CAUSE I’M SO LOST!
-Flip sees himself in the distance. Confused, he rubs his
eyes. It’s him alright! He moves closer. But, every move he
makes, the DUPLICATE hides away.
FLIP (CONT’D)
(REPEAT 2x)
LOOKING DEEP INSIDE OF ME.
TRYING TO FIND WHERE I’LL BE /
IF I KEEP MOVING THIS WAY /
I HOPE TO FIND MYSELF ONE DAY.
40.
-He looks in every direction trying to find the imposter.
FLIP (CONT’D)
(questioning)
PLEASE TELL ME WHERE I’M
GOING? ...
PLEASE TELL ME WHERE I’M
GOING? ...
CAUSE I DON’T KNOW... NO!
CHORUS
(answering)
... CAUSE I DONT KNOW.
... DO YOU KNOW?
-Flip turns around and there “HE” is. Flip stands eye to eye
with the person he’s trying to find -- It FADES away.
SUDDENLY! ...
A MONKEY drops INTO FRAME, scaring Flip half to death. TAILS
(14), the guenon monkey from earlier, applauds Flip for his
vocal talents.
TAILS
(clapping)
Nice song... What’s eating ya’,
banana brain?
INNER FLIP
Who’s this guy?
Flip stops. He looks Tails up and down, fixated on Tails’
ugly black eye.
FLIP
Tail swinger.
TAILS
Knuckle masher.
FLIP
Furry face.
TAILS
Meat eater.
Tails patiently waits for the comeback. Flip’s running out of
jokes... he panics and blurts out--
FLIP
(same lame joke)
Tail swinger.
TAILS
Big ears.
41.
INNER FLIP
He’s killing you.
Flip stops and admits defeat. He just walks off. Tails swings
behind--
FLIP
(annoyed)
Leave me alone you stupid monkey.
TAILS
So... Where ya’ going, chimpey?
Flip tries to walk faster, but that doesn’t work either.
Tails creeps up on his side.
FLIP
I don’t know.
TAILS
Then, what are you walking for?
Tails blocks him off, but Flip just side steps him and keeps
moving.
FLIP
To get away.
TAILS
From what?
FLIP
From you, black eye. Leave me
alone.
A cagey Tails, throws caution to the wind. He waves his arms,
signaling stop.
TAILS
Ummm... I wouldn’t walk that way if
I were you.
Flip blows him off.
FLIP
What do you know? ...
KA-KAUH!!!
BIRDS make themselves known in the trees.
Flip looks up and sees (THE BIRD GANG) a swarm of naughty
parrots, watching him and Tails as they move through the
jungle.
42.
TAILS
We’re in bird gang territory.
FLIP
Bird gang?
TAILS
You never really left chimp island,
have you?
FLIP
No.
The birds fly into a nearby tree. They line up and break out
into song, introducing themselves RAPPING 80’S STYLE.
“THE BIRD GANG”
BIRD #1
WE’RE THE BIRD GANG.
BIRD GANG
KAUH!!!
BIRD #1
DRIVE YOUR SPECIES INSANE.
His birdie friend steps up.
BIRD #2
TAKE ALL YOUR GOODIES.
EAT THEM, LEAVE YOU IN PAIN.
#2 steps back. Out steps muscle bound birdie #3--
BIRD #3
IT’S A WORD AROUND THE JUNGLE /
DON’T KNOW IF YOU HEARD...
BIRD GANG
DON’T MESS WITH THE BIRDS!
-The LEADER jumps center stage. Super charismatic and evil.
BIRD GANG LEADER
AND I’M THE LEADER.
MUCH MEANER.
MAKE YOU SICK LIKE YOU GOT BIRD
FEVER /
ME AND MY CREW /
WITH A BIRDS EYE VIEW...
The gang steps up--
43.
BIRD GANG
STICK TO YOU LIKE GLUE!
BIRD GANG LEADER
SO DON’T RUN -
DON’T HIDE -
STAY LOW -
WE’RE REAL COOL -
WE’RE REAL TOUGH -
CALL OUR BLUFF -
BIRD GANG
NOPE -
NOPE -
CAUSE WE’RE FLYING IN THE SKY
YEAH -
YEAH -
AND WE’LL TAKE ALL YOUR
STUFF!
BIRD GANG LEADER
WE’RE THE BIRD GANG!
WE’RE THE BIRD GANG!
WE’RE THE BIRD GANG!
WE’RE THE BIRD GANG!
BIRD GANG
KAUH!
KAUH!
KAUH!
KAUH!
BIRD GANG LEADER
RECOGNIZE WHEN YOU HEAR THE NAME /
WE’RE THE BIRD GANG!
BIRD GANG
KAUH KAUH!
Meanwhile, underneath their beaks--
TAILS
(whispering)
Alright, while they’re rapping...
get ready to run.
FLIP
Why? They’re just some stupid
birds.
All activity pauses. The leader leans over.
BIRD GANG LEADER
Stupid birds? BIRD GANG!?
BIRD GANG
(soldiers)
KAUH!
The leader threateningly eyes Flip.
BIRD GANG LEADER
Attack!!!
WHOOSH! The birds fly out the trees with their sights on
Flip’s food.
44.
INNER FLIP
RUN!!!
Flip and Tails take off -- Tails swings in the trees, while
Flip stays on ground.
The bird gang swarms into a formation of a GIGANTIC BIRD,
biting down at Flip. It’s the same as his dream!
WITH TAILS
swinging in the trees--
TAILS
Quick -- up here!
INNER FLIP
No way.
Flip stays on ground.
A LAKE
is just ahead. Flip pushes harder seeing his get away plan.
The bird gang closes in... Their jaws clamp closer to Flip,
close enough to bite him on the butt. CHOMP! CHOMP!
Flip drops his bag... SPLASH! He jumps into the lake.
BIRD GANG
(squaking)
Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
The birds devour his food. Leaving nothing but the stick
behind.
FLIP
(vengeful)
I’ma get you birds!
BIRD GANG LEADER
Have a nice bath, monkey!
FLIP
I’m not a monkey. I’m an ape!
Ape smacks the water in anger. The bird gang flies away.
BIRD GANG LEADER
(laughing)
Whatever, monkey!
45.
--Tails hangs down from a branch. He takes a puff of his
inhaler.
TAILS
...told you.
FLIP
Shut up.
INT. FLIP’S COMMUNITY - LATER
Lewa brings dinner out to the family. A salad with all the
fixings. The family rubs their hands anxiously.
AMINAH
(her song)
Yum-Yum-Yummy in my tummy! Yummy in
my tummy... Yum-Yum!
Lewa looks around. No Flip. She looks eyes Kulo.
LEWA
Kulo, where’s Flip?
KULO
Haven’t seen him.
Lewa moves down the table. Aminah shrugs her shoulders. Lewa
eyes Gamba who’s hiding his face in his food.
LEWA
Gamba?
GAMBA
(hiding something)
Huh? ... Pretty good salad.
LEWA
Have you seen Flip?
(beat)
Gamba? ...
He cracks under the slightest pressure. He spills the beans.
GAMBA
I can’t handle the pressure! Stop
grilling me! Alright, I’ll tell
ya’... He went off to find himself
in the jungle. I tried to stop him
but it didn’t work. He’s gone
bananas I tell ya’.
Lewa looks around. That motherly instinct is kicking in.
46.
LEWA
What?!? Where’s he going?
Gamba shrugs his shoulders, quizzically.
GAMBA
I don’t know.
LEWA
Gamba! ...
GAMBA
I tried to stop him. You know how
hardheaded that boy is.
Aminah pushes her plate forward and angrily crosses her arms.
AMINAH
No fair! Flip gets to go out in the
jungle.
Kulo pushes her plate back in-front of her. She smiles
cutely.
LEWA
I’m very disappointed in you,
Gamba.
Gamba looks to Kulo for help. Kulo looks away, not wanting to
get into it. Gamba smirks at Kulo. Lewa catches it.
LEWA (CONT’D)
This isn’t funny.
GAMBA
I know, Lewa. I’m sorry. I’m sure
the boy will be alright. He’s
becoming one heck of an ape ya’
know.
LEWA
He’s not the one I’m worried about.
I’m worried about all the other
dangers out there.
GAMBA
The jungle isn’t that dangerous.
INT. JUNGLE - IRONICALLY
Flip and Tails search for food. An OKAPI runs past screaming
for his life.
47.
OKAPI
Oh my goodness! ...
A PACK OF RHINO’S chase the okapi.
RHINO’S
Get back here! This is our jungle!
Flip and Tails stop immediately... turn around, and walk in
another direction.
EXT. JUNGLE - NIGHT
Up high in the dark, dense, foliated hills, a beautiful MOON
gleams in the backdrop as BATS hang in a tree. A bat (FANG)
steal his friend’s juicy pulsating bug. The friend (DANG)
tries to grab him back. They tussle over the bug almost
ripping him apart.
DANG
What are you doing? Stop!
FANG
(dracula style)
I w-vant to suck your bug!
DOWN BELOW, Flip’s tossing and turning in his sleep again. He
moves side to side, rustling the leaves.
INT. JUNGLE - (PREMONITION) - NIGHT
Flip’s walking in the dark, SUDDENLY! ... He’s grabbed and
dragged backwards. Flip screams!
GLOWING EYES emanate from everywhere. An unclear chant
becomes clear.
We HEAR, “YOUR FEAR DECIDES YOUR OUTCOME!”
The eyes move closer. Suddenly, he’s engulfed by the beady
glowing eyes. Flip SCREAMS for his life!
INT. JUNGLE - BACK TO SCENE
Tails hovers over Flip trying to awake him. Flip bounces up
pushing Tails over. He raises his hands to smash Tails.
INNER FLIP
Pound em! Pound em!
48.
TAILS
(cowering in fear)
Flip, it’s me! It’s me!
Flip stops, noticing he isn’t dreaming anymore. He looks
around. Flip plops down on his butt.
FLIP
It felt so real.
Tails gets up and wipes himself off.
TAILS
What’s wrong with you? You crazy or
something?
FLIP
I don’t know. I’ve been having
crazy dreams and they’ve been
coming true.
Tails looks at him like he’s crazy. Because he really is.
Flip notices and explains.
FLIP (CONT’D)
I dreamed a big bird was trying to
eat me. And it did.
TAILS
But that was just the bird gang.
FLIP
So. I still saw it.
Tails playfully knocks against Flip’s head. Flip smacks his
hand away.
TAILS
So what did you see this time?
FLIP
I was in the dark and things were
glowing. They looked like eyes.
They surround me and I woke up.
Tails yawns, slightly uninterested... He walks over and jumps
back on his bed.
TAILS
Did anything bad happen?
FLIP
Not really. I woke up before
anything could.
49.
TAILS
Maybe that’s a sign. Get some
sleep.
EXT. JUNGLE - MORNING
The sun rises behind rolling mountains of verdant trees. The
glorious jungle sparkles with light.
INT. JUNGLE
A group of FOREST HOGS compete for the girl of their dreams.
One, two, three hogs puff out their muscular chests. The
fourth takes a deep breath and puffs out a weird fart. His
cheeks glow rosy red.
INT. JUNGLE - MORNING
Tails gathers PAPAYA in a tree for breakfast. His hands are
filled, but he goes for more. Tails slips and almost drops
some but cleverly catches them.
TAILS
You know, we can do this a lot
faster if you would just climb up
here and help me...
FLIP (O.S.)
I’m fine down here.
TAILS
So, all we’re eating is papaya?
FLIP (O.S.)
Grab some of those mangoes over
there.
Tails balances and tightropes on a branch and then jumps
across to the next tree.
TAILS
You grab some, ya’ big lazy... I
gotta do all the work around here.
“Climb this” -- “Climb that”...
When are you gonna help me?!?
INT. RIVER - A SHORT TIME LATER
Flip slowly walks across the deep water with Tails on his
shoulders. A tortoises pace would be putting it nice.
50.
TAILS
I’m sure there was an easier way
around, but thank you.
FLIP
No problem.
INNER FLIP
Go faster. We’re sitting ducks.
FLIP
I can’t go any faster. I got Tails
on me.
Tails looks around. He’s lost. He points at Flip and does the
crazy, “Cuckoo-Cuckoo” sign.
A FISH jumps out the water, triple-smacking Flip in the face
with his fin. Flip turns and squirms but can’t get away.
Tails cracks up.
TAILS
So, when did you start having these
dreams?
FLIP
After I had an accident in the
Great Ape Games.
Tails gets a good look at Flip’s face.
TAILS
That was you!? I saw that. They
said you died.
Flip stops immediately. Tails looks around confused.
TAILS (CONT’D)
C’mon, it’s not that bad. I’m sure
it was a misunderstanding.
FLIP
Something’s crawling up my leg.
Flip grimaces in pain. He looks down, but he only sees his
own reflection in the water.
FLIP (CONT’D)
Arg-ghhh! I can’t feel my leg..
TAILS
Shake it out. Like this...
51.
Tails shakes his leg wildly, joking more than helping. But,
Flip is in trouble.
FLIP
I can’t move it.
(then)
Arg-ghh-hh... I c-c-an’t breathe.
A PYTHON ascends from the water wrapped tight to Flip’s body.
Tails jumps onto Flip’s head.
TAILS
Aa-hh-hhh! Help! Help!
They python slithers it’s colorful neon body. Beautiful yet
dangerous.
PYTHON
(savoring it)
Mhmmmmm... monkey and ape on the
menu today.
TAILS
(admonishing)
You wouldn’t like us, believe me.
We’re all tough and chewy.
PYTHON
...yumm... my favorite.
Tails sees no way out.
TAILS
Help! Help! Where’s supermonkey
when you need em’?
Tails whips out his banana-signal. He signals once-twice-
three times. No sign.
TAILS (CONT’D)
Oh, no! It’s daytime!
INNER FLIP
We’re dead! We’re dead!
The python OPENS WIDE, suddenly -- Its body is pulled under,
freeing Flip.
FLIP
Let’s get outta here!
He quickly scatters to dryland. They watch as the python
fights with this unknown river monster that saved their
butts.
52.
The python seesaws in and out the water -- It reaches out one
last time before being sucked in.
PYTHON
(frightening scream)
Ahhh!
Flip and Tails stare awestruck. Tails takes a super huge puff
of his inhaler.
TAILS
So, did you dream about that?
FLIP
No.
TAILS
I didn’t think so.
Tails faints in aftershock.
EXT. JUNGLE - SUNSET
The sun leaves a gentle glow over the horizon. Light softly
fades away as nighttime approaches. The jungle just HUMS with
a diversity of life.
INT. JUNGLE - A SHORT TIME LATER
Flip and Tails walk thru dense underbrush. They swipe and
push away hanging lianas.
FLIP
So, how’d you get the black eye?
TAILS
I don’t wanna talk about it.
FLIP
Why?
Flip cuts Tails off. Tails tries to side step him but it
doesn’t work.
FLIP (CONT’D)
You always talk about my problems.
How you get the black eye?
TAILS
A bully, okay?! He punched me and
took my bag.
53.
KA-KAUH!!! KA-KAUH!!!
ANGLE - THE BIRD GANG
watches their every move from the trees. The leader taps his
buddy.
BIRD GANG LEADER
Hey, monkey!
TAILS
(to Flip)
Don’t say anything. Just keep
walking.
Flip fights the urge to respond. He cowardly keeps his head
down. That is until...
INNER FLIP
Show that bird who’s boss.
Flip looks up in the trees.
FLIP
Come say it in my face, banana
beak!
Flip picks up a rock and chucks it at the leader. The leader
easily ducks it.
INNER FLIP
Whoa.. Whoa.. I didn’t say do that.
You’re on your own.
TAILS
(c’mon)
Flip??? ... you missed.
The “BGL” can’t believe the disrespect. He eyes his troops.
BIRD GANG LEADER
Bird Gang!
BIRD GANG
KAUH!
He points down to Flip.
BIRD GANG LEADER
Operation Pinch-Peck-Monkeys-
Neck... ATTACK!!!
The birds fly from out the trees.
54.
A chase ensues! Flip runs away as fast as he can. They peck
and pinch Flip as he runs.
FLIP
Hey! Ow! Ouch! Oww! Ouch!
A bird clips Flip on the back of his neck, his...
LUCKY NECKLACE
--falls to the ground...
Birds pick up the necklace and take it to their leader.
Flip turns back.
FLIP (CONT’D)
Alright, that’s it.. Give me back
my necklace!
BIRD GANG LEADER
(to Flip)
Finders keepers, monkey!
(to the birds)
Oo-ooh! This will look nice. Put it
on me.
His loyal subjects put the necklace around his neck.
BIRD GANG LEADER (CONT’D)
(flossing it)
How do I look? I don’t look dumb do
I? ...
The BGL struggles to hold the necklace up. Veins almost pop
out his neck.
BIRD #1
You look good, sir.
BIRD GANG LEADER
Bird Gang!
BIRD GANG
Kauh!
BIRD GANG LEADER
Behold the new royal symbol!
BIRD GANG
(cheering)
Ka-Kauh!
An irate Flip approaches the tree.
55.
FLIP
Give me my necklace back now!
BIRD GANG LEADER
No way, mo-n-kay. Come up here and
get it, chump!
Flip steps towards the tree. All the birds simultaneously
spread their wings. Flip cautiously steps back.
BIRD GANG LEADER (CONT’D)
(teasing)
Awww.. little monkey’s scared to
climb.
Tails ENTERS FRAME--
TAILS
Go get it, Flip. Don’t let him
scare you.
FLIP
Forget it.. You’re scared of them
too.
Tails timidly slouches over--
TAILS
(unconfidently agreeing)
You’re right.
Suddenly, he takes a deep confident breath, puffs out his
chest and walks off.
Flip gives up, surrendering.
FLIP
Alright, let’s make a deal.
BIRD GANG LEADER
We don’t make deals with monkeys,
monkey.
FLIP
I’m an ape!
The BGL eyes his buddies...
BIRD GANG LEADER
Is he getting loud with your
royalness?
56.
FLIP
(toning down)
No.. that’s just a really special
necklace.
The BGL rises his head in honor, like he’s giving A Great
American speech.
BIRD GANG LEADER
It is special. It’s a symbol of
greatness. A symbol of royalness,
and a symbol of the leader of the
bird ga--
WHAM! The BGL is tackled out the tree by Tails.
They hit the ground, knocking the necklace off his neck.
Tails grabs it and runs, Flip follows.
The bird gang chases after them.
BIRD GANG
Get em!
TAILS
(to Flip)
Follow me!
Tails leads the way through the jungle. Dense foliage covers
them as they run. They dash through trees, vines, and hanging
lianas-- making it difficult for the birds to follow above.
ANGLE - A CAVE
lies ahead.. Tails and Flip run into the cave, losing the
birds as they fly over.
INT. CAVE - SECONDS LATER
Dark... with a tiny glimpse of light shining through the
entrance.
FLIP
What do we do now?
TAILS
I don’t know. I didn’t think this
far. Wait until night I guess.
ANGLE - STARRY SKY
stars TWINKLE in the distant sky.
57.
INT. CAVE - NIGHT
Dark.
WE HEAR: LOUD SNORING.
A silhouette figure energetically moves around.
TAILS
Flip... Flip... Flip... Wake up..
FLIP
(groggy)
Yeah-yeah.. Huh? What?
Tails bounces around like a pro boxer in the ring. Flip
stares, uninterested.
TAILS
I feel so alive. I beat up that
bird.
FLIP
It was just a bird.
TAILS
So... I looked fear dead in the
eyes and made birdie buffalo wings.
Tails swings and falls over. Suddenly, he sniffs the air. The
scent locks on.
TAILS (CONT’D)
You smell that? ...
Flip sniffs behind his butt. It isn’t him.
FLIP
What?
TAILS
Life! -- C’mon.
Tails tugs his arm, forcing Flip to get up.
FLIP
Hey-hey-hey! What are you doing?
It’s the middle of the night.
EXT. CAVE - NIGHT
Tails drags Flip out of the cave.
58.
FLIP
Alright-alright, I’m up. Where are
we going?
TAILS
You’ll see.
He pulls Flip’s arm leading the way.
INT. JUNGLE - NIGHT
Night stains the glistening foliage with shadow and murk.
Tails leads Flip thru the creeping vegetation and night bugs.
Flip and Tails pass by AFRICAN ELEPHANTS taking a late night
bath in a river. They shoot water high in the air like
fountains.
INNER FLIP
Morning sunshine! It’s not morning.
Where the heck are we?!
FLIP
Tails, where are we going?
TAILS
It’s a secret.
FLIP
How much longer?
TAILS
Just a little bit.
INT. TAILS’ COMMUNITY - A SHORT TIME LATER
Tails tugs Flip into frame. A strange OMINOUS GLOW, is tucked
behind a patch of bushes ahead.
FLIP
What’s that glow?
TAILS
(unreadable)
Uh-oh...
FLIP
What?.. What’s going on?
They split the foliage, discovering what the odd glow is.
59.
In the trees, hang packs of GUENON MONKEYS with little
GLOWING LIGHTS -- Very odd and creepy.
INNER FLIP
...I just peed myself.
Flip’s seen this before. He pauses timidly. Tails leads him
down an alleyway of glowing lights and shadows. An ODD VOICE
shouts.
ODD VOICE (O.S.)
Halt!
They stop.
ODD VOICE (O.S.) (CONT’D)
Who goes there?
TAILS
It’s me, Tails. This is my friend
Flip.
ODD VOICE (O.S.)
Tails, step forward.
Flip grabs Tails arm, not wanting to be alone. Tails shakes
loose. Flip watches, as Tails walks toward a single glowing
light. He stops, talking to someone.
INNER FLIP
...hey, what are we still doing
here? Let’s get outta here.
WE HEAR: MURMURS & WHISPERS
Tails walks back to Flip.
FLIP
What was that all about?
TAILS
(playing it cool)
Don’t worry about it.
Flip looks around. He’s not feeling it. He’s starting to get
the creeps.
FLIP
This is kinda creepy -- it’s
scaring me m--
ODD VOICE (O.S.)
(interrupting)
Flip!
60.
Flip stands frozen....
FLIP
(cowardly)
...yes???
ODD VOICE (O.S.)
Step forward!
FLIP
Nah.. That’s okay. I’m cool. Thanks
though.
ODD VOICE (O.S.)
Bring him to me!
Glowing lights rush towards Flip.
INNER FLIP
Run! Run!
He tries to bolt, but is apprehended before he can make a
move. He’s ushered to the voice.
FLIP
(frightened)
Ooo-h man--
(to Tails)
I thought this was supposed to be
fun. Help me. Tails...
Tails sticks his arms out, faking. He giggles at Flip’s
misery.
TAILS
Sorry. I can’t help you anymore.
FLIP
Tails! Tails! ....
GRUBBA, leader of the Guenon’s, stands stern. Flip’s pushed
INTO FRAME. He stands terrified. Grubba raises his hands.
WE HEAR: SYNCHRONIZED STOMPING
The luminosity of the GLOW is amazing.
Flip looks around, panic builds.
FLIP (CONT’D)
Hey, I don’t know--
GRUBBA
Flip, are you ready?!
61.
FLIP
For what? ...
“GO BANANAS”
GRUBBA
(counting up)
ONE!.. TWO!.. ONE--TWO!
ONE-TWO-THREE! HIT IT!
Suddenly, everything LIGHTS UP. Several piles of BANANAS are
stacked around. All the monkeys dance with their glow lights.
GRUBBA (CONT’D)
(REPEAT 8X)
GO! -- BANANAS!
Flip’s stunned.
The monkeys follow the dance instructions.
GRUBBA (CONT’D)

PUT YOUR LEFT FOOT / OVER THERE.
NOW SPIN AROUND / WITH SOME FLAIR.
TAKE IT HIGH / NOW DROP IT LOW.

Grubba points out several monkeys asking them, “Do they wanna
go?” The chosen ones do a dance when picked.
GRUBBA (CONT’D)
(REPEAT 8X)
WANNA GO? -- GO AHEAD!
Grubba hypes the crowd up. Pointing to the crowd, YOU-GO, ME-
GO, WE-GO, BANANAS!
GRUBBA (CONT’D)
(REPEAT 8X)
YOU-GO! ME-GO! WE-GO! BANANAS!
It’s time. Monkeys go ballistic, tossing BANANAS in the air!
GRUBBA (CONT’D)
NOW..
(REPEAT 8X)
GO! -- BANANAS!
Now, it’s back to the dance instructions.
62.
GRUBBA (CONT’D)
NOW PUT YOUR HANDS / ON YOUR GUT.

Grubba picks monkeys out.
GRUBBA (CONT’D)
(REPEAT 8X)
WANNA GO? -- GO AHEAD!
He points to the crowd.
GRUBBA (CONT’D)
(REPEAT 8X)
YOU-GO! ME-GO! WE-GO! BANANAS!
Flip’s having so much fun. They pop bananas like champagne at
a party. A moment to remember.
GRUBBA (CONT’D)
NOW..
(REPEAT 8X)
GO! -- BANANAS!
Flip’s tossing bananas in the crowd. Tails comes up, dancing!
GRUBBA (CONT’D)
HOLD ON / TAKE A BREAK.
CATCH YOUR BREATH / PIECE OF CAKE.
GET SOME FOOD / GRAB A DRINK.
SLOW IT DOWN / TIME TO THINK.
TICK TOCK / ALMOST TIME.
HEAR THE WORDS / WHEN I RHYME.

Grubba points to Flip, signaling him front stage. Flip walks
front and center. Grubba asks the crowd.
GRUBBA (CONT’D)
(REPEAT 8X)
WANNA GO? -- GO AHEAD!
Flip dances alongside Grubba. He hands Flip the MIC, and
steps off into the crowd, leaving Flip on his own. It’s
Flip’s turn to hype the crowd up. He’s timid at first, but
relishes the moment.
63.
FLIP
(REPEAT 8X)
YOU-GO! ME-GO! WE-GO! BANANAS!
Monkeys fling bananas to the sky!
FLIP (CONT’D)
NOW..
(REPEAT 8X)
GO! -- BANANAS!
Flip jumps up and down. Tails jumps into him.
FLIP (CONT’D)
(REPEATING)
GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! GO!
Flip slips on a BANANA PEEL. It lands right on his face!
INT. JUNGLE - (PREMONITION) - NIGHT
Flip’s chasing Gamba through the canopy. He’s fights hard but
cannot catch up. Flip’s the tortoise and Gamba’s the hare.
FLIP
Grandpa! Grandpa! Slow down! Wait!
INT. FLIP’S COMMUNITY - SIMULTANEOUSLY
Flip finally catches up. His family is under trees taking
shelter from the heavy rain.
Lewa tends to Gamba who looks pretty weak. Flip timidly
approaches. He’s in total shock. He’s never seen his grandpa
like this before. Gamba eyes him.
GAMBA
When I was angry, I was in a
cocoon. Ooo-oo-h, but now...
Now, I’m a beautiful butterfly.
EXT. A STREAM
Reflects the morning sun. The reflection is shattered by Flip
and Tails who stumble across causing waves to ripple in the
water, hungover. Flip’s in his own world mumbling to himself.
TAILS
Flip-flip-flip. Last night. Last
night. Last nigh---t. It-it was so
fun.
64.
FLIP
Yeah. I was like... I was like, “Go
Bananas!”
Flip jumps with his hands hoisted in the air. He falls face
first on the ground.
TAILS
Whoa-whoa.. Are you okay?
Flip picks himself up.
FLIP
I saw last night in a dream, but it
wasn’t like that. Maybe these
dreams aren’t all bad.
TAILS
Maybe it’s all in your head.
Flip stops and looks at Tails. He points at him for the
genius idea.
INT. YERK’S ROOM - DAY
Yerk’s bent over a stool, about give himself a shot of some
GLOWING green liquid. He jumps at the sight of someone in the
doorway.
YERK
Oh! ...
(covering himself)
It’s not what it looks like.
Saamya stands, flabbergasted. She drops her bag.
SAAMYA
You’ve been cheating this whole
time?!
YERK
No. This is what keeps me
beautiful. See, look--
He flaunts his beautiful chiseled face and body. Saamya’s not
buying it.
SAAMYA
You can’t get out of this one.
YERK
C’mon, babe. I-
65.
SAAMYA
I’m not your babe, Yerk. I should
tell everyone you’ve been cheating.
Yerk changes up his whole demeanor.
YERK
Well, it’s not like anyone’s going
to believe you. I’m beautiful. And
you’re -- you...
Saamya chuckles in disbelief. She walks over and picks up her
bag.
SAAMYA
You know what? You’re gonna get
what you deserve. You’re a jerk.
Yerk cracks a smile.
YERK
(callous)
Ha.. That rhymes with Yerk.
Saamya slams the door.
ANGLE - THE SUN
shines in the heat-white sky. A BIRD flies too close. It
turns into rotisserie bird. It drops below, right into the
mouth of a SERVAL.
EXT. JUNGLE - DAY
An EAGLE flies thru heat white sky. He passes by branchy
trees in which we stop -- And drop down to,
A TREE BRANCH
where A BUG and a LIZARD square off. The bug jumps back
karate style, while the lizard sits, uninterested. Then, the
lizard quickly sticks his tongue out eating the bug in one
gulp.
Down below, a CARACAL waits in the bushes for an OKAPI and
its calf to walk past. His plan is set and ready. He pulls
out a recipe for “Baby Okapi.”
A juicy bug stands where an “X” marks the spot for the okapi.
ARTIE the aardvark sees the bug. He runs out and stands on
the “X”...BOING! The trap springs him high in the air.
66.
OVER IN THE BUSHES...
Flip’s taking a leak. He leans against a tree.
FLIP
Will you shut up.
INNER FLIP
Me and you together forever, buddy.
Flip shakes and walks over by Tails. Tails has an apple in
his hand. Flip sticks his hand out. Tails squenches his face
up.
TAILS
You didn’t wash your hands, mister.
Tails turns and keeps walking.
TAILS (CONT’D)
Flip, I have a question for you.
Don’t get mad, okay?
FLIP
What?
TAILS
You’re a chimp right?
Flip points out his features. He’s a chimpanzee for sure.
TAILS (CONT’D)
Were you raised by rhinos or
elephants or something?
FLIP
No. Why?
Tails jumps on a branch and swings around.
TAILS
Cause, I haven’t seen you climb a
tree yet.. I’m all climbing in the
trees, and you’re all, walking on
the ground all the time. Kinda
weird...
INNER FLIP
Oh, no. We’re busted. Run!
Flip doesn’t feed into it. He grabs Tails’ apple and walks
off. Tails jumps to the ground and follows behind.
67.
FLIP
I can climb trees.
He takes a bite of the apple.
TAILS
(digging deeper)
Why didn’t you go get that necklace
then?
FLIP
Drop it.
Food flies onto Tails face. He wipes it off.
TAILS
No.. Are you scared or something?
Flip gives him the evil eye as he pushes through some bushes.
Tails doesn’t take that for an answer.
FLIP
...drop it.
TAILS
(pressing on)
No. Are you scared? Are you scared?
Are you scared? Are you scared?
Tails keeps the annoying act up. It’s driving Flip insane.
TAILS (CONT’D)
I’m gonna keep on asking you.. Are
you scared? Are you scared?
FLIP
Yes! Okay! Yes.. I’m scared to
climb trees you happy!?
Flip throws the apple and angrily walks off. But, you know
who follows behind.
TAILS
(supportive)
I can help you with that.
Flip eyes Tails and chuckles.
FLIP
No thanks. Maybe you can teach me
how to talk someone’s ear off. You
do a pretty good job at that.
68.
Tails stops. He didn’t like that comment too much. He picks
up a nut and throws it at Flip. It hits him in the back.
TAILS
I also can teach you how to face
your fears.. You’re the one scared
to climb trees, ya ape!
Flip turns around. He gets in Tails face.
FLIP
I’m not scared to climb trees,
okay? I can climb a tree right now!
TAILS
(egging him on)
...do it.
Flip grabs a tree branch and lifts himself up. He notices a
caterpillar as he climbs onto a higher branch.
INNER FLIP
Don’t do it. Don’t do it.
Flip makes the mistake of looking down. He panics and climbs
down to the ground.
INNER FLIP (CONT’D)
(chicken)
...bok-bok! ...bok-bok! Ha!
Flip doesn’t say anything. He just walks off.
EXT. RIVER
A group of hippos hang out in the local river.
A WOMAN shows off her new and improved figure to her husband.
She just knows she lost weight. She strikes a sexy pose.
WOMAN HIPPO
Honey, how do I look? Honey! ...
MAN HIPPO
...yeah..yeah?
She stiffens up, trying to keep the sexiness. Her husband
pauses, gathering his thoughts. He sweats under pressure.
MAN HIPPO (CONT’D)
You look... fat? ...
69.
She gives him the eyes. All the guys take one step over,
sensing it’s about to get ugly. Suddenly...
WOMAN HIPPO
You do love me!!!
She gives him a big kiss and swims off. The guys look to the
husband. He nods his head.
INT. JUNGLE
Tails has Flip practicing his climbing technique. No worries
for Flip, he’s super low to the ground. Flip dolefully climbs
back and forth.
FLIP
Can we do something else?
Tails whips out a blindfold. He tries to tie it around Flip’s
head but Flip protests.
FLIP (CONT’D)
I can’t see. I’m not doing that.
TAILS
Trust me. Get out your comfort
zone.
Eureka! Flip’s eyes light up. He goes with it. Blindfolded,
he grabs the branch and hangs on. He reaches for the next but
falls down. He doesn’t give up though. He stands up and tries
again.
INNER FLIP
What are you doing? It takes more
than this to get rid of me.
INT. JUNGLE - LATER
TWO LIONS gradually walk thru the jungle. They’re so lost in
their conversation, they don’t peek ahead.
LION #2
We had to get you out of there.
Too much game in the savannah.
LION #1
(mantra)
I can do it. I can do it. No meat.
No meat. I’m a vegan. I’m a vegan!
70.
LION #2
Who wants that antelope?
Who wants that hippo?
Who wants that...
LION #1
Not me.
Not me.
Suddenly, Lion #2 stops, noticing a fresh OKAPI less than 30
yards away. He licks his chops, salivating.
LION #2
(finishing his statement)
Okapi...
He taps his buddy. The lions stand wide-eyed at their
fortune.
LION #1
(killer instinct)
...I want that okapi.
They sprint towards the okapi. He takes off screaming!
AROUND THE CORNER...
Tails steps from behind a rhino, relieved.. The rhino has a
vine tied around his waist.
TAILS
That was close.
Tails looks up towards the canopy.
TAILS (CONT’D)
A little higher.
The rhino moves forward. He’s hooked up to some type of
pulley system.
UP IN THE TREES
Flip’s in a basket hoisted in the air. He counts aloud.
FLIP
Five-four-three-two-one!
Alright, I’m taking it off.
INNER FLIP
You think he’s really your friend?
Look where you are?
Flip takes the blindfold off. Shocked, he panics. He clings
onto the basket.
FLIP
Tails! What the ...! Tails!
71.
TAILS
Trust me. Just grab the branch.
With no other option, Flip slowly climbs out the basket onto
the branch. He pauses, then tries to grab the next branch
over but cowardly pulls away.
DOWN ON THE FLOOR...
Tails eyes rhino.
TAILS (CONT’D)
Lower the basket.
RHINO
You sure? ...
Tails nods. Rhino lowers the basket.
UP WITH FLIP
just hanging... Suddenly, the basket starts moving. He looks
over.
FLIP
Hey?! What are you doing?
Flip reaches out with his feet. No luck.
FLIP (CONT’D)
Tails! ... Tails! ...
Tails looks up at the pitiful hanging Flip. He doesn’t even
attempt to move. Tails makes his way up the tree to help. He
hangs on a nearby branch antagonizing Flip.
TAILS
C’mon, you can do better than this.
FLIP
I can’t.
INNER FLIP
Yes. You can’t. Give up.
Tails reaches for Flip’s blindfold. Flip FLINCHES big time.
TAILS
(curious)
What was that for? ...
FLIP
Sorry, my grandpa always flicks me
when I say can’t do something.
72.
FLASHBACK - GAMBA AND FLIP
Gamba flicks Flip TIME AFTER TIME for saying he can’t do
something.
INT. JUNGLE GLADE - SECONDS LATER
Tails blindfolds Flip.
TAILS
Touch is as good as sight....feel
the wood. Don’t think, just go.
Flip takes a deep breath. He’s locked in and ready.
FLIP
Okay. I’m ready.
Flip reaches for the branch.
INNER FLIP
Think. Think. Think.
He snatches his hand back quickly. Tails throws his hands up
in disgust.
TAILS
You thought!
FLIP
I know!
TAILS
Stop.
FLIP
I can’t...
Tails smacks Flip across the face. He quickly moves a couple
branches down.
FLIP (CONT’D)
Ouch! Ow! What was that for?
TAILS
You said you can’t. So I smacked
you.
ANGLE - STARS
shimmer in the night sky. The constellations weave a starry
canopy.
73.
EXT. JUNGLE - NIGHT
A half moon crests over sloping hills of trees and rich
verdure.
INT. JUNGLE - JUNGLE GLADE
Flip’s still hanging on the branch. He looks over at a
sleeping Tails.
FLIP
Tails? ....
Tails responds with a loud snore. Flip desolately hangs his
head, ashamed.
INNER FLIP
How’s it hanging? Ha! One more...
...hang-panzee.
FLIP
...shut up.
EXT. JUNGLE - MORNING
The SUN rises beautifully behind a stunning waterfall
crawling with twisted vines. A CROCODILE tries to stop
himself from going over. He grabs a vine...SNAP! It breaks.
CROCODILE
(falling down the falls)
Croc!!!
INT. JUNGLE
Tails places down the final leaf in a humongous pile. He
looks up to Flip.
TAILS
Jump into the pile!
A weary Flip jumps into the pile. WHOOSH! ... All the leaves
scatter in different directions.
FLIP’S POV
Tails stands atop...
TAILS (CONT’D)
You’re a coward.
74.
Flip stands up and brushes himself off, but he forgets the
huge SPIDER on his shoulder.
Tails has a cheesy grin on his face.
TAILS (CONT’D)
It’s a spider on your back.
Flip turns around.
SPIDER
(friendly)
Hello!
Flip freaks out! He runs around crazy. Seconds later, Flip
returns, gassed out, hands on knees.
TAILS
Embrace your fears. If you control
your fear, you control your
thoughts.
Tails pats Flip on the head and walks off. Flip is so out of
breath, he can’t utter a word.
TAILS (CONT’D)
Good talk. C’mon, I’m hungry.
INT. JUNGLE - DAY
Flip mopes around the bird district. Pretty, exotic, unique
birds fly and relax around the district.
INNER FLIP
Face it, you’re a loser. Always
will be.
Flip smacks his head repeatedly. Tails walks up next to Flip,
giving him a weird look.
TAILS
I wonder if they’re are any pears
around here..
Flip looks up in the tree and sees...
ANGLE - A BIRD FAMILY
in a NEST. The MOMMA BIRD has her FOUR BIRDIES at the edge
ready to jump.
75.
MOMMA BIRD
(confident)
Alright, babies, it’s flying time.
She knocks her kids off of the nest. ONE, TWO, THREE, the
baby birdies fly own their own.
The FOURTH BIRDIE stands timidly at the edge of the nest. She
knocks him off. He sticks his wings trying to catch the wind
but he doesn’t. THUD! He hits the ground.
MOMMA BIRD (CONT’D)
(motherly)
Oh, no -- my baby!
WITH FLIP
watching, feeling the little birdies pain. He can relate so
much.
The momma bird flies down to aid her baby. She picks him up
and carries him to the nest. The little birdie shakes it off
and jumps back to the edge.
WITH LITTLE BIRDIE
he jumps off the nest, plummeting towards the ground. He
opens his little wings and catches the wind perfectly. He
soars and flies around showing everyone he can do it too.
WITH FLIP
astonished at the birds bravery and determination. He
clinches his fist, inspired.
FLIP
That’s it.
INT. JUNGLE - A SHORT TIME LATER
Flip and Tails stand in-front of the humongous tree. Flip
gulps at the size of this thing.
TAILS
(protesting)
You must be crazy.
FLIP
I saw something earlier. I think it
was a sign. I’m ready.
Tails takes a step over, but accidently steps on a horned
melon.
76.
TAILS
Fig-ugli-cherry-kiwi!!! Dang horned
melon... O-oooo-h, a horned melon!
Tails grabs the melon and takes a bite. He hypocritically
eyes Flip.
TAILS (CONT’D)
You just chickened out yesterday.
What makes today any different?
Flip gives him a cheeky smile. Feeling confident, he SINGS.
“I’LL NEVER GIVE UP”
CHOIR CHORUS (CONSECUTIVELY)
I’LL NEVER GIVE UP!
I’LL NEVER GIVE UP!
I’LL NEVER GIVE UP!
I’LL NEVER GIVE UP!
I’LL NEVER GIVE UP!
FLIP (CONSECUTIVELY)
- EVEN WHEN IT SEEMS I CAN’T
GO ON.
- LOOKING FOR A SIGN FAR FROM
BEYOND.
- NEVER CHANGES, THE SAME
THINGS DAY TO DAY.
- TODAY’S A NEW DAY, THINGS
MAY JUST GO MY WAY.
ANGLE - THE SKY
opens up, bringing out the sun. BIRDS fly across frame.
FLIP
MY TIME IS NOW /
I CAN FEEL IT GROWING NEARER /
THE LIGHT’S SHINING THRU /
AND THINGS ARE SO MUCH CLEARER /
The sunlight blinds Flip. He puts his hand up to cover his
face.
FLIP (CONT’D)
BELIEVE IN MYSELF /
WORK HARD / AND TRUST MY INTUITION.
BE THE VERY BEST I CAN BE /
IS MY ONLY MISSION!
77.
-Flip pushes against a large tree stump. Tails sarcastically
leans against the stump, thinking he can’t move it.
-Suddenly, the stump uproots. Flip pushes the stump forward,
almost running Tails over.
FLIP (CONT’D)
I WILL NOT STOP / I CANNOT STOP /
UNTIL I REACH MY GOAL!
-Flip pushes the stump along with Tails off a small cliff.
Excited, he punches in the air like Rocky.
CHOIR CHORUS (CONSECUTIVELY)
I’LL NEVER GIVE UP!
I’LL NEVER GIVE UP!
I’LL NEVER GIVE UP!
I’LL NEVER GIVE UP!
I’LL NEVER GIVE UP!
FLIP (CONSECUTIVELY)
- EVEN WHEN IT SEEMS I CAN’T
GO ON.
- LOOKING FOR A SIGN FAR FROM
BEYOND.
- NEVER CHANGES, THE SAME
THINGS DAY TO DAY.
- TODAY’S A NEW DAY, THINGS
MAY JUST GO MY WAY.
-Flip bounces around, feeling it’s his time.
FLIP (CONT’D)
A NEW BEGINNING TO REACH AT MY TASK
IN HAND.
Oh, no! He steps in quicksand. He starts to sink.
FLIP (CONT’D)
HAVE NO FEARS AND FIGHT, TO MAKE MY
WAY OUT QUICKSAND.
-Tails swings into frame hanging from a VINE. Flip grabs a
hold and starts to pull -- he slowly makes his way out.
FLIP (CONT’D)
BELIEVE IN MY STRENGTHS /
THINK SMART / AND TRUST MY HEART.
PIECE ME BACK TOGETHER /
EVEN WITH BROKEN PARTS.
I WILL NOT STOP / I CANNOT STOP /
UNTIL I REACH MY GOAL...
78.
-Flip pulls himself out of the quicksand. He emerges
confidently as someone who’s been sinking but determined to
fix it.
FLIP (CONT’D)
I WILL NOT STOP / I CANNOT STOP /
AND I’LL NEVER GIVE UP!
Flip points to Tails, who’s loving the song. Tails points
back.
FLIP (CONT’D)
EVEN WHEN IT SEEMS YOU CAN’T GO ON.
...NEVER GIVE UP!
LOOKING FOR A SIGN FAR FROM BEYOND!
CHOIR CHORUS (CONSECUTIVELY)
I’LL NEVER GIVE UP!
I’LL NEVER GIVE UP!
I’LL NEVER GIVE UP!
I’LL NEVER GIVE UP!
I’LL NEVER GIVE UP!
FLIP (CONSECUTIVELY)
- EVEN WHEN IT SEEMS I CAN’T
GO ON.
- LOOKING FOR A SIGN FAR FROM
BEYOND.
- NEVER CHANGES, THE SAME
THINGS DAY TO DAY.
- TODAY’S A NEW DAY, THINGS
MAY JUST GO MY WAY.
-Flip grabs a tree branch, lifting himself up. Tails pumps
him up.
TAILS (O.S.)
Take your time! Take your time...
Flip climbs higher. Branch by branch, he makes his way to the
canopy. He’s pretty high now.
He stops. Focusing on the BRANCH of his choice. Flip stares.
INNER FLIP
You don’t want to do this to your
buddy.
FLIP
Yes, I do.
INNER FLIP
(aggressively)
You need me, Flip. You need me!
79.
FLIP
I don’t need you! You’re not even
my friend. I need this.
Flip holds his hand out. The only thing stopping him is
himself. He closes his eyes.
TAILS (O.S.)
Fear is only here to stop you. Use
it as a vine to climb to new
heights. New heights!
INNER FLIP
(last hope)
You can’t do this. You can’t!
WITH FLIP
attempting to suppress FLASHBACKS of his fall. He struggles
to silence his inner thoughts.
FLIP
(talking to himself)
Silence your mind. You can do it,
Flip. Control your thoughts. I can
do it. I can do anything.
INNER FLIP
No!!!
He takes a deep confident breath and swings onto the branch.
He slowly swings from branch to branch. His focus is
phenomenal.
TAILS
(smiling)
C’mon, keep going.. keep going...
Flip swings thru the trees like an ape again. He’s finally
got over his fear of climbing trees. Elated, he screams in
excitement.
FLIP
(elated)
Tails, look! Looks, Tails, I’m
doing it! Whewwww!
Tails smiles happily as Flip overcomes his fear. He pats
himself on the back.
80.
INT. JUNGLE - A SHORT TIME LATER
Tails and Flip eat lunch in a tree. They look out over the
jungle, animal watching.
TAILS
You did a heck of a job, Flip.
FLIP
Thanks, buddy. I owe a lot to you.
TAILS
This whole jungle is based off
fear. Fear stifles our thinking and
actions. It creates indecisiveness
that results in stagnation. Look at
how some respond to fear.
Flip weirdly eyes Tails, the brainiac.
DOWN BELOW...
TWO rhinos, father and son, walk along the floor. ARTIE the
aardvark walks in-front of them cutting them off.
A CARACAL hides in the bushes with a napkin and silverware
waiting for his plan to come to fruition.
Artie steps on a trap meant for the adult rhino. A tree sends
Artie flying high in the sky.
Artie quickly grabs a huge leaf and parachutes down.
Half way to the ground, Artie notices a CROCODILE and his big
mouth waiting for him to land. Artie kicks his feet, floating
left. The crocodile moves, and so does Artie. They go in
circles!
An elephant rudely points “go that way” to an overgrown HONEY
BADGER. The badger submissively does as asked.
Suddenly, a GROUP of monkeys swing the badger into a tree.
...BANG! The badger hits a GORILLA. The gorilla takes the
badger and tosses him in the river...SPLASH! BUBBLES shoot to
the top.
A CHIMPANZEE walks through jungle collecting horned melons
and putting them in a bag.
Nearby, a leopard stalks it’s prey. It’s eyes glow with the
sight of a dinner.
81.
LEOPARD
(licking chops)
Mhmmm... Dinnertime..
He crouches down staying low to the ground.
UP IN THE TREES...
Flip’s eating two pears at one time. The rest are stacked in
his lap. Tails taps Flip and points the leopard out.
TAILS
See, watch what this chimpanzee
does when fear strikes it.
Flip looks down. He does a double take. Suddenly, he jumps
up, waving his arms.
FLIP
Saamya!
DOWN ON THE GROUND...
Saamya looks up. She sees a chimpanzee acting all crazy. She
thinks it’s a joke.
SAAMYA
(giggling)
Who is that? ...
Flip points towards the leopard.
FLIP
Watch out!!!
Saamya looks over. She sees the glare of the leopards glowing
eyes. The leopard makes a move. Saamya takes off!
She dashes thru the jungle with the leopard on their tail.
Saamya jukes thru thick tree trunks.
WITH FLIP
swinging thru the trees to save Saamya. He’s never moved so
fast before.
FLIP (CONT’D)
Run, Saamya! Run!!!
WITH SAAMYA
looking back, noticing the minuscule distance between her and
the leopard. Suddenly, everything slows down... The LEOPARD
lunges at Saamya in super slow mo. She covers up.
82.
BAM!!! Flip tackles the leopard. Everything speeds back up.
Flip tussles with the leopard. SNAP! SNAP! The leopards jaws
clamp at Flip’s neck. Flip quickly pushes its face to the
side...CRUNCH! The leopard bites Flip’s shoulder. He screams!
The leopard goes for the kill. An injured Flip grabs its
neck, pushing it away. The leopard aggressively inches
closer.
Its sharp bone breaking teeth are centimeters from
flesh...BAM! The leopard is smacked by a log.
Flip pushes the leopard off, hyperventilating at his near
death experience. Saamya stands atop.
SAAMYA
Are you okay? ...
Tails comes bursting on the scene.
TAILS
That was the coolest fight ever,
Flip. You’re fearless now, bro! You
just fought a leopard! A leopard!
Tails struggles to lean Flip up. Flip winces in pain.
FLIP
...easy... easy... my shoulder.
Suddenly, he grabbed and hugged by Saamya. She holds on real
tight. Flip feels a pain go thru his body, but nothing
compares to the love he’s getting.
SAAMYA
...thank you. I was so scared.
EXT. JUNGLE - LATER
The sun peaks behind rolling mountains of verdant trees. The
glorious jungle sparkles with light.
INT. JUNGLE - SUNSET
A CHAMELEON crawls on a tree branch. Tails shoves the branch
out of his way. The chameleon goes flying.
CHAMELEON
(airborne)
Whoa!!!
83.
WITH FLIP
in a well shaded area, getting his arm wrapped by Saamya. She
looks into his eyes but doesn’t say anything.
FLIP
What? ...
Saamya stops wrapping.
SAAMYA
You just left. You didn’t say bye.
Nothing. And then you just come out
of nowhere and save me.
Flip musters a slight chuckle. Saamya’s serious. In the b.g.,
Tails slowly lowers into frame from a liana.
FLIP
I had some personal things I had to
take care of. But I think I got it
now.
SAAMYA
You just don’t get it. Life isn’t
all about you. You have family and
animals who care about you.
She stares lachrymosely.
SAAMYA (CONT’D)
Who love you... You just can’t
leave someone wondering if they’ll
ever see you again. Not knowing if
you’re okay or lying dead
somewhere.
Overcome with emotion, Saamya walks off, embarrassed by her
tears. Tails jumps down and chases after her.
TAILS
...hey... whoa.. whoa... hey.
Saamya turns to the shorter, smaller primate.
TAILS (CONT’D)
He’s an idiot. Flip doesn’t think
sometimes. He’s so emotionally
driven he makes emotional mistakes.
Saamya sniffs and wipes her eyes. Tails must of said
something right.
84.
SAAMYA
What’s your name?
Tails sticks his hand out for a hand shake. The two shake
hands.
TAILS/SAAMYA
Tails... Saamya...
Tails grabs a leaf and offers it as a tissue. Saamya grabs it
and dries her eyes.
TAILS
Talk some sense into him.
Saamya takes a deep breath and pats Tails on the back. She
walks back over to Flip.
FLIP
I’m sorry--
Saamya cuts him off before he can finish.
SAAMYA
Listen, it doesn’t matter why you
left. All that matters is that
you’re alive--
Flip fixes his lips to say something but Saamya has the stage
right now.
SAAMYA (CONT’D)
-- and there are some things you
should know.
FLIP
Good or bad?
SAAMYA
Bad. Yerk’s been cheating in the
games.
Flip stands up protesting. He can’t believe he would stoop
that low. Flip jabbers and mumbles underneath his breath,
throwing a temper tantrum.
FLIP
That cheap chimpanzee...four years!
Saamya braces herself for the thriller.
SAAMYA
And Gamba’s sick again.
85.
Flip stops instantly. His heart sinks to the floor.
FLIP
What? ...
His legs feel weak. Flip takes a seat.
FLIP (CONT’D)
What? ... They said it was over.
SAAMYA
It just came back. We don’t know
how.
Flip anxiously stands up. He’s filled with that emotional
energy again.
FLIP
I’ve gotta do something. I gotta go
back.
(anxious)
C’mon, why are we just sitting
here? Why aren’t you helping him?!
What does he need?!
Saamya holds up the bag of melons. She sees the hurt in
Flip’s eyes. She drops the bag and holds her arms out for a
hug.
SAAMYA
Come here, Flip.
Flip stands hesitant. He has so much going through his head.
Saamya walks over and hugs him tight. Flip closes his eyes.
He looks so weak in her arms.
FLIP
I just don’t want to lose him.
EXT. RIVER - NIGHT
Moonlight reflects of the gentle water. Animals relax and
enjoy the cool weather.
Lightning bugs pave the way for the Upside-Down Crocodile
River Tour a MONGOOSE is running. As long as the croc doesn’t
wake up...
MONGOOSE
(tour guide)
And, if you look to your left, you
will see some of the great animals
our jungle has to offer.
86.
FLASH! FLASH! FLASH! The TOURIST take pictures.
INT. JUNGLE - NIGHT
Flip’s tossing and turning in his sleep again. He’s having
another dream.
INT. JUNGLE - DAY
ANGLE - TREETOPS
groups of APES swing branch to branch. Leaves fall like rain
drops.
WITH FLIP
reaching the end of the treetops. He jumps down...
SPLASH! SPLASH! SPLASH!
Flip plummets into the water, followed by other apes.
The river parts as Flip runs though. The river closes on all
the other competitors. The river washes up the apes.
Flip’s all alone on final stage of the race. A mile long
sprint to the finish line. He trucks it towards the end.
Suddenly...
Yerk comes out of nowhere. He sprints toe to toe with Flip.
They’re approaching the finish line. All of a sudden, Yerk
leans into Flip, sending them both crashing to the ground!
They roll like two snowballs in an avalanche.
Flip stops tumbling. Confused, he looks up... Yerk bounces up
and takes off.
Flip watches as Yerk runs to the finish line.
FLIP (O.S.)
No!!!
INT. JUNGLE - NIGHT
Flip screams, waking Saamya and Tails from their good dreams.
TAILS
This guy with the nightmares again!
87.
FLIP
That cheater. He’s gonna trip me on
the final sprint of the race!
Saamya eyes Flip, confused. Tails is just sick of the late
night yelling.
SAAMYA
Who?
Flip whacks his bed of leaves. A SQUIRREL bounces off like a
moonbounce.
FLIP
Yerk.
SAAMYA
How do you know? You didn’t even
race...
Flip looks to Tails. Tails signals go on.
FLIP
I’ve been having these dreams. And
they’ve been coming true.
TAILS
He’s a psycho.
Saamya sits back like a therapist. But, she’s a nurse.
SAAMYA
Premonitions.. You see it before it
happens. Kinda predict the future.
Flip leans in intrigued for knowledge.
FLIP
Exactly. Always something scary.
Saamya puts her thinking cap on. She taps her finger against
her cheek. Flip does exactly the same. BINGO!
FLIP (CONT’D)
But this dream happened before the
last one came true... so...
(getting excited)
Something changed. Maybe grandpa’s
okay! Maybe...
SAAMYA
Your fear controls your outcome.
Tails points to Saamya.
88.
TAILS
She’s on to something.
The SQUIRREL climbs back onto Flip’s bed. He comfortably lies
down.
SAAMYA
If it’s always something scary,
it’s based on your fear.
Chronophobia. Fear of the future.
Saamya holds two fingers up.
SAAMYA (CONT’D)
When the problem arises. You either
choose, “fight or flight.”
Flip whacks his bed again. The SQUIRREL flies off!
FLIP
...you’re right. No more running.
ANGLE - THE MOON
full, bright -- it gleams in the night sky, overshadowing the
jungle and its rivers.
EXT. WATERFALL - MORNING
The trio approaches a cliff that connects to a wondrous
waterfall. With no way around, they must cross an old LOG
BRIDGE that connects one side to the other.
Tons of water thunder over the crest, sending up great clouds
of mist as the water crashes below.
The trio slowly crosses over the timeworn log. Ridden with
moss, bugs, and grubs, this log hasn’t moved in centuries.
They slowly move across the log. Saamya stops, staring out at
the breathtaking view. Flip stands alongside, holding her
hand as they look out over the jungle. There’s a moment.
SAAMYA
Beautiful, isn’t it? ...
Flip eyes Saamya. He takes this whole moment in... A
beautiful ape and a wonderful view. Life can’t get any
sweeter.
FLIP
Yeah. It is.
89.
Suddenly, thousands of BUTTERFLIES fly up and out towards the
sun, creating a wondrous scene.
Saamya nudges Flip...
SAAMYA
That’s for you. It’s a sign.
INT. FLIP’S COMMUNITY - LATER ON
Flip walks up with Saamya and Tails in tow. Tails looks
around excited.
TAILS
So this is chimp island.
OVER BY THE BUSHES
Lewa and Aminah gather figs, fruits, and nuts for breakfast.
AMINAH
(picking berries)
This one’s juicy. This one’s juicy.
Flip slowly creeps up behind them. He grabs some berries off
the ground. He tosses one at Aminah but it lands short,
catching the attention of Lewa. She smiles, relieved. Flip
shushes her. He throws another.
...Pop! It hits Aminah. She looks at Lewa. Lewa points to
Flip.
Aminah drops her basket. She runs and jumps into Flip’s arms.
Suddenly, another set of arms joins in on the hug. It’s Lewa.
LEWA
I’m so glad you’re safe.
FLIP
Where’s grandpa? ...
Lewa’s smile turns into a concerned frown.
LEWA
He’s at the revival center. He was
having heart problems again.
Flip’s face frowns up. His head drops down as his shoulders
slump.
FLIP
I’ma go see him.
90.
GAMBA (O.S.)
Why go see me, when I’m right here?
Gamba enters frame.
FLIP
Grandpa! ...
Flip hugs his grandpa like never before, bear hugging him so
tight, he almost squeezes his guts out.
GAMBA
Don’t go scaring the boy with that
nonsense, Lewa. I’m just fine.
Gamba jokingly throws punches at Flip. Flip covers up,
smiling.
GAMBA (CONT’D)
Hey, Yera.. What’s happening? Back
already?
FLIP
Yeah... I have something for you.
Flip takes off a little cocoon bracelet. He holds it out to
Gamba.
GAMBA
What’s that?
FLIP
...my cocoon.
Gamba looks down at the bracelet.
GAMBA
Does this mean you’re ready?
Flip nods his head confidently. Gamba rubs Flip on the head.
LATER ON THAT NIGHT...
The community chows down on the huge feast! FRUITS, NUTS,
FIGS, INSECT BOWLS, and BUSHPIGS lie across a huge tree
stump.
The family along with Saamya and Tails stuff their faces in
the glorious buffet.
91.
INT. FLIP’S COMMUNITY - NIGHT
Flip’s up like an insomniac, while everyone else is sleep. He
stares out into the night sky. Swollen CLOUDS form like
hearts and lovers kissing.
Avoiding it, Flip turns to his right. He sees, OWL #1 in a
tree with his wife. He woos her, grabbing and dipping her.
OWL #1
(kissing her)
I told you, baby. “Owl” always be
there for you.
Flip turns around, but he can’t escape the signs. He looks up
to the sky and there’s Saamya’s face in the clouds. He sings.
“I THINK I’M IN LOVE”
FLIP
ALL THESE FEELINGS THAT I HAVE.
I WONDER IF SHE KNOWS? . .
THE TRUTH IS I’LL BE MISERABLE
IF SHE EVER GOES.
The cloud dissipates.
FLIP (CONT’D)
ALL THIS HEARTACHE THAT I FEEL.
IS CAUSE I DON’T KNOW HOW TO SAY
THAT I LOVE YOU,
AND I NEED YOU TO STAY.
-INT. REVIVAL CENTER - NIGHT. Saamya’s cleaning a hut. She
stacks CUPS and BOWLS on a tray.
SAAMYA
I THINK I’M IN LOVE WITH YOU.
I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO.
IF I TOLD YOU.
WOULD YOU TELL ME BACK?
SOFT VOICE
...I LOVE YOU.
SAAMYA
JUST LIKE THAT.
-EXT. RIVER - NIGHT. Flip walks riverside, singing in the
moonlight.
92.
FLIP
I THINK I’M IN LOVE WITH YOU.
I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO.
IF I TOLD YOU.
WOULD YOU TELL ME BACK?
SOFT VOICE
...I LOVE YOU.
FLIP
JUST LIKE THAT.
Saamya and Flip SING in two separate locations, but we feel
like they’re face to face.
-INT. REVIVAL CENTER - NIGHT. Saamya cleans the bathroom. She
grabs items and puts them into a bin.
SAAMYA
ALL THIS LOVE THAT I CRAVE FOR,
IS RIGHT IN-FRONT OF ME.
WHO KNOWS WHAT I HAVE TO DO,
JUST TO MAKE HIM SEE.
She looks up and sees herself in the mirror. A real “me
moment”.
SAAMYA (CONT’D)
THAT I’M THE PERFECT GIRL FOR HIM.
AND HE’S THE PERFECT ONE FOR ME.
ALL MY LOVE IS LOCKED AWAY,
AND HE’S THE ONE WHO HOLDS THE KEY.
-Flip and Saamya “act” like they’re talking to one another.
Somehow, they inadvertently finish each other’s questions and
statements:
FLIP
(speaking)
You’re the only one that makes me
feel like this.
SAAMYA
Feel like what?
What were you trying to say?
FLIP
(unsure)
I don’t know. I don’t know what I’m
trying to say, okay?
93.
SAAMYA
(figuring it out)
I think I know what you were trying
to say.
-Saamya slides a door open, walking out onto the balcony. The
sky glitters with STARS.
-EXT. RIVER - NIGHT. Flip stares at his reflection in the
river. Saamya POPS up next to him. Awwwww. They look so happy
together.
SAAMYA/FLIP
(singing)
I THINK I’M IN LOVE WITH YOU.
I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO.
IF I TOLD YOU.
WOULD YOU TELL ME BACK?
SOFT VOICE
I LOVE YOU...
SAAMYA
JUST LIKE THAT.
BOTH
I THINK I’M IN LOVE!
I THINK I’M IN LOVE!
ECHO

-INT. FLIP’S COMMUNITY - MORNING. Gamba throws water all over
Flip. He wakes up, upset.
GAMBA
Rise and shine, butterfly!
MOMENTS LATER...
Flip runs in place, holding a HUGE LOG over his head. Gamba
watches on.
YERA
(tired)
Man this is hard...
GAMBA
Knees up. Now pick up speed.
94.
-INT. JUNGLE - DAY. Flip does push-ups with Aminah and Tails
on his back. He’s easily breezing thru them. Gamba notices.
He sits on Flip’s back. Flip struggles to do just one!
-INT. JUNGLE - DAY. Gamba shouts at Flip as he sprints the
Flat Grounds.
GAMBA (CONT’D)
C’mon, Yera! I know you can run
faster than that. LET’S GO!
Flip pushes harder.
GAMBA (CONT’D)
Faster! Faster!
-INT. JUNGLE - NIGHT. It’s raining hard. Flip consecutively
leaps up and touches a tree branch.
GAMBA (O.S.) (CONT’D)
Jump! Jump! Jump! Faster! Higher!
Jump! Jump!
-INT. JUNGLE - DAY. Flip swings through the trees at a
blistering pace. Gamba dangles down from hanging lianas.
GAMBA (CONT’D)
Swing! Swing! Swing! Faster!
Faster! Swing! Swing!
-INT. TIMBER FLATS - NIGHT. The pack is eating dinner.
Gamba’s in Flip’s ear, coaching him as he eats.
GAMBA (CONT’D)
Eat! Eat! Eat! Stuff it down! More!
Eat! Eat!
-EXT. RIVER - MORNING. Flip dives in the freezing cold water.
He paddles but sinks below. Gamba chuckles as bubbles shoot
to the surface. Suddenly, Flip paddles to the top.
GAMBA (CONT’D)
Oh, snap! You were almost croc
chops.
Stroke by stroke, Yera gains more momentum.
GAMBA (O.S.) (CONT’D)
Atta boy! Push harder! Let’s go,
Yera!
Flip makes it across and exits the water. He hunches over,
hands on knees.
95.
GAMBA (CONT’D)
No time for resting! You can
breathe when you finish. Let’s go!
They’re passing you right now!
-INT. JUNGLE - LATER. Gamba watches Flip as he climbs up and
down a tree.
GAMBA (CONT’D)
That’s it! Fifty more times, Yera.
YERA
(aww man)
Fifty? ...
GAMBA
Yep. Complain again, and it’s
sixty.
-INT. JUNGLE - DUSK. Flip swiftly swings thru the treetops.
This kid is really moving. He screams thru the pain.
GAMBA (O.S.) (CONT’D)
Push harder! Almost done!
Flip climbs down towards Gamba, who’s jogging along.
GAMBA (CONT’D)
Just a little left. Let’s go!
Flip’s almost to the ground when he tires out. He desperately
leaps to the ground.
BOOM! He tumbles hard.
GAMBA (CONT’D)
...Owww!
(beat)
C’mon, Yera -- you’re not hurt. Get
up! Get up!
Gamba pushes Flip to fight thru the fatigue and pain. He
rises to his feet and continues to run.
GAMBA (CONT’D)
There you go.
Flip’s so tired he can barely pick up his feet -- They drag
with every step. Suddenly, his legs buckle. He falls to the
ground.
GAMBA (CONT’D)
C’mon, Yera!
96.
Flip slowly rises to his feet again. He uses every ounce he
has to keep pushing.
GAMBA (CONT’D)
You can do it!
Flip pushes harder, picking up speed. He moves step by step,
suddenly falling to the ground, again.
GAMBA (CONT’D)
(inspiring)
--Do you want this?! Do you want
this?!
YERA
(crying out)
Yes!!!
GAMBA
Then get up! Show me you want it!
Flip struggles to pick himself up. He crawls on his hands and
knees -- Sheer determination.
Gamba coughs. He weakly takes a knee to the ground. He picks
himself up, not letting Flip catch a glimpse. He strengthens
up for his grandson.
GAMBA (CONT’D)
There you go! Keep moving!
Flip pauses, barely holding his own weight.
YERA
(giving up)
I ca--
Gamba flicks Flip in the head. His arms shake like noodles,
ready to collapse.
GAMBA
Never say you can’t do something!
Do you wanna give up?
YERA
(whimpering)
No!!
GAMBA
Will you ever give up?!
YERA
No! I’ll never give up!

What’s going on...?! He struggles to move his body, wincing with every movement. SAAMYA (calming him down) --Lay still, Flip. You’re hurt bad. Sorry about all the noise. FLIP (confused) ...what are you talking about? A VOICE comes out of nowhere. Let’s call it INNER FLIP. INNER FLIP The wraps, dummy. What are ya blind too? FLIP No. Saamya eyes Flip. She didn’t ask him anything. Flip squinches his eyes, slightly blind. FLIP (CONT’D) Saamya? ... Is that you? SAAMYA Yes, it’s me. You broke bones, not your eyes. FLIP Huh? ... Saamya looks at Flip like he’s crazy. SAAMYA Flip, you fell during the race. You don’t remember? INNER FLIP Look down, genius. Look what you did to us. 11.
  • 13. Flip looks down at his bandages. His mind is fogged. He can remember a thing. FLIP No. SAAMYA (gentle) You fell from the treetops in the last stage of the race, Flip. Flip hangs his head in shame. Saamya sees she shouldn’t have told him. She changes the subject. INNER FLIP (sarcastic) Way to go, buddy. Flip looks around. No one but him and Saamya. FLIP You don’t hear that? SAAMYA Hear what? Are you hungry? Do you want some mashed nanas? Flip weirdly check his surroundings again. FLIP ...yeah. Saamya grabs a seat next to Flip. She picks up a bowl of ant banana mash, attempting to feed him. SAAMYA Okay, open up... Flip opens wide, but closes to speak as she puts the spoon to his mouth. Saamya rubs banana mash all over his face. They share a good laugh. Saamya tries to give him another spoonful but Flip’s heavy grin stops her. SAAMYA (CONT’D) What? Why are you smiling? FLIP Do you remember the last time we ate lunch together? 12.

SAAMYA No. Flip still has the cheesy grin on his face. There’s a moment. SAAMYA (CONT’D) (smiling back) Open up. Yerk enters the hut showing off his medal. He takes a good look at Flip. YERK (frowning his face up) Oo-ooh... that’s bad. (to Saamya) You ready, babe? ... Yerk eyes them suspiciously, noticing something’s going on. YERK (CONT’D) (to Flip) Hey... you’re not pushing up on my girl or anything are you, brokey? (to Saamya) C’mon, babe, let’s go... Saamya spins around in her chair. SAAMYA I’m not your babe. She stands up and waves bye to Flip. He smiles back. She exits. 13.
  • 15. Yerk peeks around the corner to see if she’s gone. He looks back to Flip. YERK Hey, good luck with that butterfly thing you got going on, bro. (insulting) Slip, right? Ahhh.. forget it, later. INT. JUNGLE - DAY Animals bask in the monstrously dense green wonderland dappled by sunlight. It buzzes with a melody of sounds. An AARDVARK (Artie) wearing sunglasses, sticks his tongue in an anthill. Nearby, OKAPIS and PYGMY HIPPOS feed on tree leaves and buds. Artie’s tongue pops from underground, an okapi bites it. ARTIE Ouch!!! Artie jumps back...right onto an ELEPHANTS salad. The elephant bops Artie on the head, then strikes him like a tee off. He flies across the jungle. INT. REVIVAL CENTER - FLIP’S HUT - LATER ON Flip’s staring at a BUTTERFLY poster on the wall. It reads, “Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly.” INNER FLIP So what do we do now? Just stare at this meaningless poster. You can never become a butterfly. You’re a loser. Flip nods his head side to side trying to shut the voice up. FLIP Shut up...shut up. Suddenly, Flip’s FAMILY enters his hut, showering him with love. They’re oddly surprised by the mummy outfit. LEWA Awww, look at my baby... 14.
  • 16. AMINAH (towards Flip) Whoa.. cool! GAMBA How are you feeling, Yera? FLIP Hey, guys. I’m okay. INNER FLIP ...not. Aminah hovers over Flip’s food-- AMINAH (hungry) O-oohh -- banana mash with ants. KULO Stop, Aminah. That’s Flip’s food. FLIP It’s okay. She can have it. Aminah snatches the bowl and digs in. Kulo silently walks around examining Flip’s body. Something is on his mind. He can’t hold it in anymore: KULO See.. This wouldn’t of happened if you just listened to me. I told you, forget about that race and become the hunter I know you are. You want to waste your time with this silly race. We’re not built for this type of stuff. FLIP I’m not a hunter, dad. KULO I just don’t understand you. You could of died.. you risk your life for-- LEWA (interrupting) --Leave it alone, Kulo. Kulo storms out. It’s an odd silence in the hut now --except for the SLURPING of Aminah. 15.
  • 17. INNER FLIP What’s his deal? LEWA Don’t worry about him. GAMBA It’s just a setback. No worries. Gamba looks around the room, deja vu. He gets a chill. Lewa pats him on the shoulder. GAMBA (CONT’D) Being in here again gives me the willies. EXT. REVIVAL CENTER - NIGHT LIGHTNING BUGS stuffed in cylinders shine bright, lighting up the whole center. In a nearby tree, TWO OWLS hangout. One has a SQUIRREL dangling from his claws, futilely reaching for a nearby branch. OWL #1 (disbelief) And then get this... she told me to stay there and watch the kids. I said, “Hoot?” OWL #2 (laughing) Ho-oot! I know that’s right. INT. FLIP’S HUT - NIGHT Flip’s in his bed having a bad dream: INT. JUNGLE - (FLASHBACK)- THE RACE - (DREAM SEQUENCE) Flip’s moving through the treetops -- He swings faster and faster, tasting the victory ahead. He can see his death coming, all of a sudden-- 16.
  • 18. ANGLE - FLIP --wakes up, believe he’s falling: FLIP (petrified) Ahhhh!!!! He stops, noticing it was a dream. But that doesn’t stop his heart from almost beating out his chest. LATER ON THAT NIGHT... Saamya enters Flip’s hut. He’s wide-eyed and wide awake-- SAAMYA Flip, what are you doing up? You should be resting. FLIP (vulnerable) I keep dreaming I’m falling. (then;) I’m scared to go back to sleep... Can you stay with me until I do? She smiles, thinking it’s sweet. SAAMYA Sure. She grabs a chair and sits next to Flip’s bed. Saamya lightly strokes his hand as he lies there. It only takes a second -- Flip’s out cold. She stares at him, confused. -EXT. JUNGLE - NIGHT. Stars TWINKLE gently in the midnight sky. -EXT. JUNGLE - DAY. The jungle shines in the sunlight... then darkens as the sky clouds over. It starts to rain. -EXT. A RIVER - DAY. Rises higher and higher, as the rain continues to pour. -EXT. THE SKY - NIGHT. Lightning flashes. The wind blows as storms pass through. -EXT. MOON - NIGHT. Waning, peaceful -- It sets. 17.
  • 19. EXT. JUNGLE - DAWN - WEEKS LATER The sun slowly rises over the foggy African jungle. Water drips off the dewed vegetation as it glistens in the sunlight. BIRDS fly in formation thru the sky. INT. FLIP’S HUT - MORNING Saamya enters with a huge smile. She’s hiding something behind her back. Flip smiles back. There’s a connection between the two. Suddenly, she pulls out a huge JAGGED ROCK. SAAMYA You ready? ... FLIP (startled) For what?! The execution?! SAAMYA To get your cast off, banana brain. She holds the rock up. FLIP Are you qualified to do this? Shouldn’t the doctor be in here? SAAMYA Nope... he told me to do it. Saamya edges towards Flip. He looks terrified. Too bad he can’t move. INNER FLIP Whoa! Whoa! Not our legs! Run! FLIP (scared) --wait-wait-wait-wait-wait... Let’s talk about this real quick. SAAMYA Stop being such a wimp. Sit still. Flip closes his eyes and hopes for the best. INNER FLIP ...if we die it’s your fault. Saamya splits the cast open, removing piece by piece, freeing Flip from captivity. 18.
  • 20. SAAMYA ...see -- done already... FLIP (relieved) Oo-oohh... that feels good. I didn’t know air could feel so good. Saamya covers her nose: SAAMYA Let’s get you a bath, stinky. EXT. REVIVAL CENTER - RIVERSIDE - A SHORT TIME LATER Saamya washes Flip in the local river. She rubs and scrubs him vigorously-- FLIP (protesting) Hey! Ow! Oh! Ouch! I can do it myself. SAAMYA Hold still, Flip. You smell like a gorilla. A GORILLA next to Flip covers her nose. GORILLA She’s right. INT. FLIP’S COMMUNITY - DAY Chimpanzees hang along a well shaded area, tucked away from the afternoon sun. WITH AMINAH attempting to catch a butterfly. Flip weirdly eyes Tails, the brainiac. DOWN BELOW... TWO rhinos, father and son, walk along the floor. ARTIE the aardvark walks in-front of them cutting them off. A CARACAL hides in the bushes with a napkin and silverware waiting for his plan to come to fruition. Artie steps on a trap meant for the adult rhino. A tree sends Artie flying high in the sky. Artie quickly grabs a huge leaf and parachutes down. Half way to the ground, Artie notices a CROCODILE and his big mouth waiting for him to land. Artie kicks his feet, floating left. The crocodile moves, and so does Artie. They go in circles! An elephant rudely points “go that way” to an overgrown HONEY BADGER. The badger submissively does as asked. You didn’t say bye. Nothing. And then you just come out of nowhere and save me. Flip musters a slight chuckle. Saamya’s serious. In the b.g., Tails slowly lowers into frame from a liana. FLIP I had some personal things I had to take care of. But I think I got it now. SAAMYA You just don’t get it. Life isn’t all about you. You have family and animals who care about you. She stares lachrymosely. SAAMYA (CONT’D) Who love you... You just can’t leave someone wondering if they’ll ever see you again. Not knowing if you’re okay or lying dead somewhere. Why aren’t you helping him?! What does he need?! Saamya holds up the bag of melons. She sees the hurt in Flip’s eyes. She drops the bag and holds her arms out for a hug. SAAMYA Come here, Flip. They’re approaching the finish line. All of a sudden, Yerk leans into Flip, sending them both crashing to the ground! They roll like two snowballs in an avalanche. Flip stops tumbling. Tons of water thunder over the crest, sending up great clouds of mist as the water crashes below. The trio slowly crosses over the timeworn log. Ridden with moss, bugs, and grubs, this log hasn’t moved in centuries. They slowly move across the log. Saamya stops, staring out at the breathtaking view. Flip stands alongside, holding her hand as they look out over the jungle. There’s a moment. SAAMYA Beautiful, isn’t it? ... Flip eyes Saamya. He takes this whole moment in...
