Areas of Interest and Research
Intelligent
Systems
Systems and methods inspired from nature (genetic algorithms, learning classifier systems, and
other evolutionary computation techniques, neural networks and fuzzy logic). Applications of
these methods to engineering problems in optimization and design. Systems that are capable of
learning rules to represent appropriate behaviors.
Computational
Finance
Applications of computational intelligence to finance, specially problems related to portfolio
optimization and management. Forecasting, optimization and management of portfolios, auto-
matic trading systems.
Logistics Optimization and forecasting problems in logistics that due to their size and difficulty cannot
be readily attacked using traditional methods. Routing and distribution, scheduling, sales and
demand forecasting.
Automatic
Control
Applications of evolutionary computation and neural networks for the control of difficult sys-
tems. Optimization of control systems. Optimal control with evolutionary computation; neural
networks and fuzzy logic for automatic control.
Professional Experience
Tecnológico de Monterrey, Monterrey, Mexico (1989–2016)
2003–2014 Research Chair, Evolutionary Computation, Neural Networks, and Related Techniques for Opti-
mization and Forecasting in Logistics.
1991–2002 Associate Director, Center for Intelligent Systems.
2016 Retired Professor.
2003–2016 Full Professor, Center for Intelligent Systems, Department of Mechatronics and Automatization,
Department of Computer Sciences, National School of Engineering and Sciences.
1992–1997 Associate Professor, Center for Intelligent Systems.
2. Manuel Valenzuela-Rendón
1989–1991 Professor and Researcher, Center for Intelligent Systems.
Tecnológico de Monterrey, Cuernavaca, Mexico (1981–1989)
1984 Director of the Computer Center.
Managed the Computer Center resources to satisfy the hardware and software need of the academic and
administrative departments in the Institute. System manager of the HP-3000 system.
1984 Advisor of the major areas of Computer Science and Computer Engineering.
Assigned courses and supervised professors in both areas. Student Advising.
1982–1983 Head of the Science Department at the Preparatory School.
Hired part-time teachers. Assigned courses and supervised teachers in the department.
1981–1989 Full-time Professor.
Other Experience
1992 Visiting Professor, NASA, Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas, Software Technology Branch.
Research in genetic algorithms, learning classifier systems, and fuzzy control.
1988–1989 Research Assistant, University of Alabama.
Research and Development Projects
2003–2014 Evolutionary computation, neural networks, and related techniques for optimization
and forecasting, Research Chair, Tecnológico de Monterrey, Monterrey, Grant: $100,000 USD
per year.
Through this grant we researched the application of evolutionary computation, simulated annealing, and
neural networks to some problems in logistics, like scheduling, routing and distribution, and forecasting.
2001–2002 Inventory optimization using buckets, TV Azteca.
A computer system was developed that optimizes the sales of comercializable time in television programs.
The system applied neural networks and simulated annealing for the demand forecast.
2000 Paper cutting optimization, COPAMEX.
A computer system for the optimization of paper cutting was developed. The system finds the cuts of a
set of paper rolls that minimize paper waste, knife movements, and other factors.
1998 Ratings forecast, TV Azteca.
A system to forecast television ratings was developed. The forecast was produced for 15 minutes periods
for all the national channels in Mexico in open television. The forecast could be performed for any targets.
1997–1999 Genetic algorithms for scheduling problems, CONACyT, Grant: $343,006 Mexican pesos.
Through this grant, we researched the application of genetic algorithms to scheduling problems.
1993–1994 Automatic Teller Machines forecasting, BBVA Bancomer.
In this project we developed a neural network based system for the forecasting of the amount of cash
required by automatic teller machines. In its first year it was estimated that the system produced a savings
of $1M USD in Mexico City.
1990–1993 SIBER: A computer system for the scheduling of the annealing area at HYLSA, HYLSA.
A computer system based on genetic algorithms was developed to assist in the programming of the an-
nealing area at HYLSA. The system fired simultaneous searchers to find near optimal solutions to various
operations; the solutions found were presented to the human operator as recommendations that could
be accepted, modified, or refused. The increased productivity achieved was estimated to have an impact
of $4M Mexican pesos per year.
