SUMMARY:
Ms. Hruza has a track record of ongoing success as a production & costume designer
in the American movie industry. Former Program guest lecturer in Columbia University (film
division), New York. She has extensive background in European big budget film, theater,
and opera productions. Her life as an artist and her international experiences as a
production & costume designer, graphic designer and fine artists combined with her ability
to communicate, lead and negotiate, gives her unique signature style. Her movies received
a number of awards in International Festivals.
EDUCATION AND CAREER HISTORY:
Attended Hollar's Art school and latter Applied Arts School in Prague, majoring in stage
design for film, television, and theater. Interned at the Barrandov Studios, Czech Television, and
the National Theater in Prague.
Assistant for architect and production designer Josef Svoboda and director O. Krejca
(Theatre Beyond the Gate) and Lubos Hruza (Cinoherni klub), who was becoming a highly
recognized production designer. While working together, they developed a strong and fruitful
relationship.
After the Russian invasion in 1968, they moved to Norway, where they become life
partners, and where Lubos became Madla's mentor. Under his tutelage, Madla's art education
flourished and they eventually collaborated on number of theater related projects, mutually
exchanging creative ideas and influences.
Madla started her production design career working first at the Norwegian Opera House,
the Norwegian National Theatre, followed by work at major Norwegian theaters. Gradually she
gained engagements in theaters outside of Norway, including the Renaissance Theater in Berlin
“Armer Mörder“ (Germany) with Maximillian Schell, Malmö State Theatre (Sweden) “Peer Gynt”
and Thalia Theater in Hamburg (Germany) “Maria Fights with Angles” directed by Czech political
dissident and playwright Pavel Kohout. Stage and costume design for the production of “La
Traviata” has played over twelve years at the Norwegian Opera House, and also on tour in
Scandinavia. In cooperation with Norsk Concert Direction, Madla co-produced a number of world-
renowned musicals in Chateau Neuf, Oslo, Norway. All together she created 35 stage and
2. costume design for theater and opera houses in Europe and Scandinavia. Was responsible for
production design for Ania Breien’s feature films: “Heritage” (Cannes Film Festival, prize of the
Ecumenical Jury) and “Wives - Ten Years After”.
Since 2001 (during her stay in Los Angeles), Madla brings over fifteen years experience in
film productions as a production designer. To date, she has created production and costume design
for 46 feature films, commercials, and music videos distributed throughout United States, Canada,
Europe, Korea, Egypt, Japan, and other countries.
Some of her works as production designer include: "Unrest" (dir. Jason T. Ibson)
"Yellow Bird" (dir. Faye Dunaway - premiere in Cannes), "Thank You, Good Night”, (dir. D. Charles
Griffith) "El Padrino", "Brando Unauthorized", (dir. by D. Chapa), "Blue Dream", Violent Blue" (dir.
Gregory Hatanaka), "The Sphere and the Labyrinth" (dir. Michael R. Moore) among others.
SKILLS:
Madla's talents are not limited to film and theater work. She has garnered critical acclaim for her
fine art exhibitions and artistic creations used in posters, graphic design and Album / CD covers,
including those for Norwegian Composers Society, and albums distributed to US by Phillips, Elektra
Records, RPO Records and PolyGram Labels. Her poster for Amnesty International was published
in 1989. Her works has been exhibited in 57 exhibitions in the USA, South Korea, Norway, and
Portugal.
