paper Career Planning
While attending the career fair I noticed that there were many different options for
employment. A great deal of the booths set up were for business majors. There was also a large
section for the army. Many people are surprised to learn all of the jobs the army has to offer. The
army is not just about being a soldier and fighting, you can get a job with numerous different
majors. Kroger’s also had a booth at the career fair. This could be a good opportunity for a
possible marketing majors. A skill that is important no matter what career path you choice to
take is having good people skills. This is very important because many jobs involve being able to
talk to and work with other people on a day to day basis. This skill is also very important because
even if a job does not require you to talk to people you will still be interviewed. It is a big
disadvantage when it clear to the interviewer that you are not good at talking to people. This
alone may keep you from getting the job. Another skill that is necessary to be successful is being
responsible. Every job no matter what field expects the employees to be responsible. A quality
that employers also look for is someone who is hard working. If someone slacks off and does not
do the job to the best of their abilities they will not keep the job for long. You have to be willing
to put the necessary time in and do the best you can even if it is hard. There are many marketable
skills gained from a liberal arts degree from the college of arts and sciences. One of these skills
is being able to apply reason to things. This means that from taking many science classes we are
taught to learn through facts and reason. We are able to prove our thoughts with facts. I believe
that a marketable skill is also to be organized. No one likes an employee that is unorganized, this
makes you seem very unprofessional. The college of arts and sciences has taught me to be much
2. more organized. Not only with my class papers, reading, and other work, but also time
management. Another skill that is gained in the college of arts and sciences is motivation. This
gained because you have to be very motivated in order to put in the required work to do well in
school. It is very important that this skill transfers over when having a job. Out of class
experience that is recommended to prepare for success is internships. This allows a student to
gain experience in their field of study. These such things also look very good on a job
application. Some information that I found very important when attending the fair was the
appropriate way to dress when going to these kind of events. Although I was dressed up I still
felt very underdressed. Next time I attend an event like this I may be there because I am
interested in getting a job, rather than just exploring, so it will be important to look as
professional as my other peers. Attending the fair supports my ability to build a professional
network by simply getting my name out there. Having people know who you are and making
connection with the facilities that could possibly help me later down the line. It is very smart to
keep your options open and know as many people as possible because you never know where life
is going to take you, and whose help you may need along the way.
