3. 1) Workshop on Learning Engagement
Activities for YDA, CALP & CBR combined staff Jan
6-8: Ms. Selena Fisk: Selena Fisk, a young and
enthusiastic teacher from Shorncliffe, Brisbane stayed in
Maasin for two weeks in the beginning of this year.
During her time here, she made a trip to post-disaster-
Tacloban to see if any help could be rendered. Selena
already donated, with her friends and family, AUD 2100
for our work there. Her school, St. Patrick’s EREA school
has been supporting the Boys Home for the past one
year through moneys donated through ERF(A).
Selena’s 3-day Workshop on Learning Engagement
Activities was very informative for our staff as it has
helped them to present seminars and workshops in a
more effective way. Systematic preparation of workshops
was the main focus of her Workshop. She also touched
on how we, the ERS, could engage ourselves in modern
media like Twitter and Facebook to reach out far and
wide with speed and fun. Thank you Selena for all your
help.

PARENTS IN LEYTE PROVINCE TYPHOON HAIYAN: One result of the survey
(conducted by Social Worker Daryl Valdez and 4 interns of Maasin City College:
Christine Rojas, Elvie Gula, Lalaine Mejares, and Christian Lutado), of
children who had lost both parents and who were left in the situation of great
poverty, was the identification of 17 children (8 male and 9 female) between
the ages of 6 years and 18 years. Identified also were the Franciscan Handmaids of
the Lord, a Congregation of Sisters established in the area, who could mediate any
Edmund Rice Services child assistance needed for these children to complete their
formal education. The 17 shortlisted children were identified as being in the poorest
circumstances and unaided from among a total of 101 children interviewed who lost
both parents. Any donations given specifically for the education of one or
more of these 17 children in need, would be gratefully accepted by ERS

The first ever Edmund Rice Club, from Ibarra National High School, to be
formed in the Diocese of Maasin was on a pilgrimage to Limasawa Island by
joining the 493rd
First Mass Anniversary. The history of Christianity in the
Philippines and the whole Asia began with the advent of Spanish missionaries.
This memorable journey provided exposure and experience to 30 students
belonging to the club and 10 staff who accompanied them. This pilgrimage
proved to be an eye opener towards deeper knowledge and understanding of
their culture and heritage.
