1. EDUCATIONAL CHALLENGE SCENARIO
LEARNING TOPIC: Basic High School English and Mathematics Competency
LEARNING OBJECTIVE: Prepare students to successfully complete competency tests in English and Math.
STUDENTS: Failing students/potential dropouts who do not have the support necessary to attain
success.
LEARNING CONDITIONS: While failing students exist in high schools throughout the US, each high school
would need to support those students in ways peculiar to them. The onus should be on the school to
recognize the value and the support needed by each needy student.
IMPLEMENTATION: Currently and locally, there are computer labs, computers on carts, iPads, small
classes and in some cases mentors.
EXISTING OR PROPOSED LEARNING PROGRAM:
EXISTING: Labs, detention room, mentors, library
PROPOSED: Utilize detention assignments for specialized help. Utilize suspension time for
specialized learning. Utilize off-site learning spaces. Target potential needs. Reward success.
ACTIVITIES: Support student through learning programs like Kahn Academy. Structure time
spent in detention and suspension so learning not only continues but increases. Work individually or in
small groups in off site locations like the library or gazebo at the park. Teach problem solving skills.
Provide simple rewards such as juice and sandwiches or vouchers for the school cafeteria or tickets for a
school event.
FREQUENCY: All failing students in detention and suspension every time. Each student would
need and individual program of success and rewards.
DURATION: Programs would continue until competency, graduation or demonstrable success.
