2. Introduction
• Alberto fujimori (born 26 july 1938) is a former peruvian
politician who served as the president of peru from 28 july
1990 to 22 november 2000.
• Fujimori ended his presidency by fleeing peru for japan amid a
serious scandal involving corruption and human rights
violations.
• He was extradited to face criminal charges in peru in september
2007.
• In april 2009, fujimori was convicted of human rights violations
and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
• In july 2009, fujimori was sentenced to seven and a half years
in prison for embezzlement after he admitted to giving $15
million from the peruvian treasury to his intelligence service
chief, vladimiro montesinos.

4. Fujimori Scandal
In 2006, Fujimori fled to Japan with an alleged USD 600 million of public
assets.
He has been sentenced to a complete of quite 30 years in prison.
The most common bribes were paid to television-channel owners which
allowed Fujimori's administration to control the media and politically
influence Peruvians.
Irregular payments and bribes are often demanded from companies
operating in Peru, and government contracts are often awarded to well-
connected companies.
Many companies experience the demand for facilitation payments as a
results of Peru’s extensive bureaucracy.

5. Extradition proceedings
Peru, which had sixty days to issue an extradition request, sent a high-level
delegation.
The government of Japan asked for "fair treatment" for Fujimori.
On 18 May 2006 Fujimori was granted bail (set at US$2,830) by the Chilean
Supreme Court and was released from detention.
Fujimori was not allowed to leave Chile.
He was charged with usurpation of powers and abuse of authority for
ordering the illegal search and seizure of a house owned by Vladimiro
Montesinos' wife.

6. CONVICTION

On 11 December 2007, the Peruvian court
sentenced him to six years in prison and
fined him 135,000 U.S. dollars.
On 10 April 2008, the Supreme Court of
Peru upheld Fujimori's sentence of six

7. PROCEDURAL HISTORY
After the collapse of his government in November 2000, Mr. Fujimori fled to his parents’
native Japan where he lived in self-imposed exile for five years.
After having formally announced his return to Peru to run within the 2006 presidential
elections, he flew to Chile in November 2005, where he was arrested under a warrant
delivered by the Peruvian authorities.
The extradition request was rejected on 11 July 11 2007, after the Chilean High Court
determined that the 12 criminal charges were “not considerable”.
A separate trial on corruption and illegal wiretapping charges is also planned against him.
In December 2007, Fujimori was convicted and sentenced to 6 years’ imprisonment on
charges of abuse of power in another case.

8. LEGAL OUTCOME
On 7 April 2009, the Special Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Peru
found him guilty of murder and illegal detention as crimes against humanity,
and sentenced him to 25 years' imprisonment.
He was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for embezzlement after he
admitted to giving $15 million from the Peruvian treasury to his intelligence
service chief.
Two months later, he pleaded guilty during a fourth trial to bribery and
received a further six-year term. Under Peruvian law.
On 23 January 2019, Fujimori was sent back to prison to complete his sentence
with his pardon formally being annulled a month later.Madona Mathew
9. Summary
• Fujimori was accused and convicted of the embezzlement of
government funds, along with director of national intelligence
vladimiro montesinos.
• To date, on the brink of $250 million stolen by montesinos and
fujimori, are repatriated to peru from bank accounts within the
cayman islands and switzerland.
• Allegedly there are another $380 million missing from the
original amount purportedly illegally taken by both men.
