My name isRobertBurch, and I am the ComputingServicesHelpdeskSupervisoratWestVirginia
WesleyanCollege. LukaPaukworkedforme as a work-studystudentfromJanuary2014, whichwasthe
secondsemesterof hissophomore year,throughApril2016, at whichtime he graduatedfromWest
VirginiaWesleyanCollege.
WhenLuka applied,beinganInternationalstudent, Iknew thatif I were tohire him, I wouldhave todo
so througha college-fundedposition,asopposedto a federal work-studygrant,whichourinstitution
grants verysparsely. Duringourinterview,Iwassoimpressedwithhiswillingnesstoworkandto help
otherstudentsthatI optedto give hima chance. I was notdisappointed.
It shouldalsobe mentionedthatLukawasa studentathlete atWesleyan –the startinggoal keeperon
our soccer team-- whichwhenconsideringtime forworkouts,practices,travel,andgamescombined
withrigorousacademicdemandsatWesleyan,presentsanadditionalburdenonbothtime andenergy
for work-study.
Luka’sdutieshere atthe Helpdeskprimarilyconsistedof providingwalk-inandtelephone ITsupportfor
faculty,staff,andstudentshere oncampus. Duringhisfirstsemester,Ipairedhimwithone of ourmore
experiencedwork-studystudents,whowasaComputerScience major,tohelpwithhistraining. The
twoworkedverywell together,andLukahad no problemswith pickingupthe processesusedbyour
supportstaff.
Duringthe followingsemesters,Lukagenerallyworkedmorningshifts,due tohisclassschedulesandhis
responsibilitiestosoccerinthe afternoonsandevenings. Althoughhe maynothave had an adequate
amountof sleepthe nightbefore,Lukawould workhisshiftsandprovide ourclientele withapositive
customerexperience. Ashe grewmore comfortable withthe position,Iwitnessedamore relaxedand
confidentpresence,whichtranslatedtoahigherqualityclientsupportexperience.
The springof 2016 semester,allowedLukatobreakfrom histraditional morningshiftroles,sincehe no
longerhadsoccer practices. He wasall too happyto have an afternoonshiftduringhisfinal semester,
and I wasmore thanhappyto fulfill thatrequest! Again,he performedwell.
In a nutshell,Lukaisa likeable anddrivenyoungmanwithasolidwork-ethicandcommitmenttoteam
success. I believethathe will prove tobe a valuable assettoanyorganizationthat optsto hire him.
