Analysing Shot By Shot
1. 1) Establishing shot Bible quote surrounded by 19 seconds
white-drawing the eyes straight
to the quote in order to read it
“God will not suffer you to be
tempted, above that ye are
able, But will with the
temptation also make a way to
escape” 1 Corinthians 10:13
It makes the audience realise
that this short film is going to
have a moral point behind it. It
makes them look at the short
film critically.
2) Fading text Title ‘Black Button’ 14 seconds
3) Medium close up Man A in chair 13 seconds
Man A sits in a chair and talks
directly to the audience. This
direct communication shows
how this character is a figure in
the short film that is initiating
ideas and possibly conflict.
Man A seems quite a cocky
character. The white that was
in the opening carries through
giving an empty feeling.
4) Two shot Man A and B facing each other 12 seconds
As soon as the audience see
man B man A’s direct
communication with the
audience is gone. He no longer
talks directly to the audience;
giving a sense that man B
doesn’t know the audience is
there.
5) Extreme close up Man B 17seconds
6) Shot reverse shot Between man A and B 25 seconds
7) Extreme close up Button 14 seconds
The extreme close up is
indicated by man A, he
highlights that the button is
there. We follow man B’s eye
line direct to the button.
8) Extreme close up Man A face 12 seconds
Again he seems to have a God
like status, sitting in a big chair
and talking directly to man B,
we always see man A face on.
Man B, we almost always see
him profile.
9) Following shot Button up to man A’s face 14 seconds
10) Wide shot Man A with briefcase 15 seconds
11) Shot reverse shot A and B 14 seconds
12) Medium close up Man B thinking 15 seconds
13) Extreme close up Man B turning door handle 14 seconds
This is an extreme close up,
before man B turns the handle
2. 22)Extreme close up Key to door 13 seconds
23) Shot reverse shot Man A and man B 19 seconds
24) Extreme close up The black button 11 second
25) Flash back Man B in the car 13 seconds
This scene is in black and white,
the sound is shocking and gives
the idea that something bad is
about to happen.
26) Shot reverse shot Man A in white room and car 14 seconds
27) Extreme close up Blood pouring down man B face 13 seconds
We see a close up of the blood
pouring down man B’s face,
this gives the impression that
he has been in an accident, and
this is reinforced by the car and
the screeches from it.
28) Close-up Blood covered hands 13 seconds
29) Extreme close up Stamp on piece of paper 12 seconds
This gives the idea that he is
finished with. Man A gives a
remark and says “it has been
my job to tempt him with
whatever mortal vice, that
would encourage him to take
the life of another, evil can be
saved, good can be condemned
in the transgression think of me
as Gods victor ” when then
stamp hits the piece of paper,
there is an endless thud, giving
the idea that he is going to hell.
Scene explanation summed up (Black Button):
This scene explains many following things that are to happen in the film. This scene starts fairly
slowly, with things such as bible quotes; the bible quotes give the idea that the short film is going to
have a moral meaning. Suspense is built by banging drums when the bible quote is showing. The
sound behind the dialogue give the short film a quite earthy feeling; making it seem like a dream, or
‘secret place’ this is enhanced by the white back ground. When there is a close up of the button the
music suddenly changes, this gives the sense that the button is dangerous. An echo when man A
speaks make him seem almost God like, it seems like he is alone when he is talking directly to the
audience, all we can see is him, corners of the chair and a white background. Man A uses his speech
3. powerfully; he talks directly to the other character and doesn’t stammer over words like man B.
When man B pushes the button there is a deathly silence, which was built up by the drum beat
throughout. Man A (who I thought was a God character) towards the end shocks the audience by
claiming he is the tempter (an almost devil character). “Gods filter” is what he describes himself as
toward the end. A huge thud when the stamp hits the paper, it’s although he has been dammed to
hell.
