Lorraine Hossain describes her 12-day trip to Costa Rica in June 2012 with the Green Global Renewable Energy Education Network program. The trip provided academics on various renewable energy sources like wind, biomass, geothermal, and hydro power through tours of operating plants. Lorraine also enjoyed extracurricular activities including volunteering, hiking, surfing, zip lining, and visiting a sustainable farm. She was inspired by learning about global citizenship and wants to help her own community after experiencing the smiles of families they helped in Costa Rica.
4. TWELVE DAYS OF PARADISE
Eagerly arrived on: Wednesday, June 20th, 2012
Reluctantly departed on: Sunday, July 1st, 2012
My first view of Costa
Rica through my
airplane window held
much promise for the
beauty of the country.
Throughout my stay,
the green beauty of
Costa Rica enchanted
me.
6. THE ACADEMICS: WIND POWER
June 21, 2012
We were able to take a
look inside a wind
turbine!
I felt so small standing
near the turbines.
Trees near the plant
experienced “flagging”
from the strong winds.
7. THE ACADEMICS: BIOMASS POWER
June 22, 2012
The Ingenious Taboga’s
White Sugar was
“Naturally the Best”
according to the sign.
The plant used every
aspect of the sugarcane.
I held some sugarcane
fiber in my hand!
8. THE ACADEMICS: GEOTHERMAL POWER
June 25, 2012
Inside the plant were many
pipes to transport various
liquids and gases.
This was where water was
sent in to be heated into
steam.Behind me was the big
cooling place of water with
large fans on top.
9. THE ACADEMICS: HYDRO POWER
June 26 & 27, 2012
We had to wear
earplugs in the
hydro plant
because the
machinery was
loud.
I walked by a huge
water turbine.
There were numerous
controls to turn on the
machinery.
10. THE ACADEMICS: CAPSTONE
David and Jimmy were working hard for
our Capstone project.
Jimmy, David, and I were “dressed to
impress” at our presentation.
Our researching paid off with the
successful presentation of our Capstone
project.
12. THE EXTRACURRICULAR: SUSTAINABLE FARM
AND HOUSES
The pigs’ waste was
used to produce
methane gas that was
used for cooking.
From the green roof
to the amazing sliding
doors, this
sustainable house
was awesome!
This house was
completely off the grid
and produced its own
energy!
13. THE EXTRACURRICULAR: THE RESERVA
FOREST FOUNDATION
I felt so proud
standing next to
the tree I planted
myself!
We got to try archery
with handmade bows
and arrows!
Roberta and I posed
near the 400 year old
tree, Papa Loco.
14. THE EXTRACURRICULAR: COMMUNITY SERVICE
The smiles on our
family’s faces was worth
the effort!
I got to mix the concrete!
Jenna and I packed
concrete around the posts.
Teamwork got the job done.
Megan and I carried the
basin to the posts.
15. THE EXTRACURRICULAR: RAFTING & PUMAS
This white-faced monkey
leaped over to say hello.
It was so warm that the
puma just wanted to
lounge all day.
David and I decided to be daring and sit
in the front of the raft.
The howler monkeys
sounded like wild boars!
Luckily the crocodiles didn’t
seem interested in us!
16. THE EXTRACURRICULAR: HIKING
Below you can see the distinct
change in the water.
We jumped off this
waterfall on our first full
day!
The waterfall at Rio
Celeste was blue from
the volcano’s sulfur.
17. THE EXTRACURRICULAR: SURFING
I was so excited to try
surfing for the first
time!
I posed with my surf board
after trying my luck
catching the waves.
I’ve heard that surfing is
90% waiting…
I heard right.
Even wiping
out was a
thrill!
18. THE EXTRACURRICULAR: ZIP LINING
I overcame my fear of
heights through zip
lining!
Everyone had a fun time,
even if it was scary at first.
19. THE EXTRACURRICULAR: OTHER THRILLS
We sailed and
kayaked on Lake
Arenal.
We got to stay at a hot
springs resort!
The water in the pool was
naturally heated by the
springs.
20. MY FAVORITE ASPECT OF THE PROGRAM...
My roommate, Marisol, and
I played foosball every free
moment.
David and I placed our own
Geocache at Volcano
Brewery.
We posed for one last group photo before leaving for the airport.

Editor's Notes
By the twelfth day, I had fallen in love with this country for all its green beauty, and was very sad to leave. But, I’m getting ahead of myself.
What I mistook for oil smudged tire tracks on the ground turned out to be syrupy residue from the sugarcane.
I was even allowed to touch the warm water! We learned that the gases that are escape from the ground from the drilling is directed to the large fans above the water, so employees aren’t affected by them. After the tour around the main part of the plant, we walked over to the drilling site where they add in the water.
I could feel the ground shaking as the water began coursing through the machinery. According to the lecture, the plant had the potential to generate up to 6500 KW of power!
We were treated to a skit by an indigenous group of people who let us shoot arrows afterwards. Roberta also let each of us choose our own tree, which we planted later on in the trip! My tree was an aguacero, which grows pear-like fruit the toucans love.
Regalo after we were done!
We also went rafting along the Corbici and Tenorio rivers. We were able to see so much wildlife, including howler monkeys and even crocodiles! Afterwards we visited the Puma Rescue center, where they rescue, rehabilitate, and liberate the animals of the forest. The white faced monkeys were incredibly friendly, either that or they were just as curious about us as we were about them!
