2. Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) Human History Visions of the Future Human Nature - According to Thomas Hobbes, Human beings are physical objects. He believes they are sophisticated machines all of whose functions and activities can be described and explained in purely mechanistic terms. - According to Hobbes, Humans are naturally selfish, and because of that, they are always at war and in conflict with one another. - Hobbes also believes that Human Nature is structured by Violence, Fear and Self Interest. Society Structure - Hobbes promoted that monarchy is the best form of government and the only one that can guarantee peace. He believes it is the only right form or government. He believes that by having an Monarch Government, it is the only sure means of maintaining a civil, peaceful polity and preventing the dissolution of society into civil war. He believes that to have a successful society, it must be ruled by one person; have one person make the decisions, and to make the laws. That way it keeps peace between everyone.
