New York Labor Laws
A law firm based in Hauppauge, New York, The Levinbook Law Firm, P.C. works closely with property
management firms in the New York Metropolitan Area. The Levinbook Law Firm, P.C. advises its real
estate clients on issues related to leasing and employment.
New York has numerous employment laws and regulations, many of which pertain to matters of pay. For
example, the state has a complicated minimum wage system that varies by business size, location, and
industry.
For fast-food workers who do not work in New York City, the minimum hourly wage is $12.75. However,
the $12.75 will gradually increase until it reaches $15 in 2021. In New York City, fast-food workers
already earn $15 per hour.
Labor laws also mandate overtime pay for most workers. For each hour an individual works over 40 hours
in a week, the worker is entitled to 1.5 times the normal hourly rate of pay. However, there are
exceptions. For example, domestic workers who live with their employers receive overtime pay after
working 44 hours per week instead of 40.
