4. How dangerous
city driving is?
Contrary to popular belief, City
driving IS more dangerous than
highway driving, as confirmed by a
study conducted by Saudi Aramco
in 2014 that showed that 80% of
accidents in Saudi Arabia occur
inside cities and town.

differ from highway
and rural driving

Driving on one way and
two-way roads and
following distance
#3
Driving distracted and
reckless driving
6. How does city driving differ from
highway and rural driving?
Cities are where most of the accidents occur.
There is a lot more going on compared to a highway.
Its more crowded especially in places of interest such as schools, etc.
The road geometry is not stable, you got potholes, speed bumps, etc.
So, we need to drive more carefully and be always on the lookout for
what could be a source of danger while driving inside of the city.
7. One-way and two-way streets and following distance:
• One-way roads need special attention before entering them because going against the flow of traffic will
be extremely dangerous, causing injuries or even fatalities.
• On two-way roads you need to also pay attention since oncoming traffic is closer therefore you don’t have
as much leeway and you can put yourself and others in danger when you try to pass another vehicle.
• To have good following distance you can use the counting method, which is as follows:
1. Choose an object nearby.
2. Once the car in front of you start counting (one thousand and one, one thousand and two)
3. If you reach that object before you finish counting, then you are following too close, and you should slow
down.
8. Distractions and Reckless driving
• When you drive you need to make sure to not be
distracted by anything, biggest example being using
the phone while driving.
• you also must make sure you stay away from any
reckless drivers, since they pose a safety hazard to
anyone in the road, and if you are one yourself you
must realize the implications of it and change your
habits immediately.
• Driving while distracted proves to be the biggest cause
of accidents in Saudi Arabia and therefore causes the
greatest number of injuries and fatalities so that’s why
we need to avoid those distractions.

situations in the desert
11. Driving on rural roads
It has several hazards one must pay attention to such as:
The roads are less maintained, so you need to be more careful.
Passing vehicles is harder due to smaller road sizes so you need to scan ahead to make sure you can
do it.
Crossing animals such as camels and sheep and other animals
Most of them are unlit so getting clear vision is harder.
13. How to prepare for desert trips
Take extra food and
water, a map and a
compass, first aid kit
and a flashlight.
Check your vehicle
worthiness before
you go out in the
desert.
You should ALWAYS
tell others the exact
coordinates you will
go to and how long
you will stay.

14. Driving situations on desert roads
1. If your vehicle breaks down you should stay around it and call for help
using anything you have, you can also make marks in the sand to
make it clearer for helicopters that are looking for you, and refrain
from leaving your vehicle as it will decrease your chances of being
found.
2. Try to avoid getting stuck in the sand by deflating your tires and
avoiding sudden acceleration and sudden braking, if you get stuck try
to dig around your tires and deflate them if they are not already, do
not use excessive gas to get it out since it will only dig more.
3. Also, when driving on dunes you need to always go straight up and
straight down, turning proves to be hazardous due to the top-heavy
nature of 4x4 vehicles which can cause you to lose control, or worse,
flip over and cause major injuries or even death.

17. What to do when driving on a highway
Driving on the highway consists of 3 stages entering, driving on it, and exiting it:
1. To Enter a highway you need to pay attention to the entry ramp and what is on it and you need to give right-
of-way to those that are on the highway, once you check your side-view mirrors put on your turn signal and if
everything is clear, you increase your speed gradually to enter the highway and go with the flow of traffic.
2. While driving on the highway make sure you have safe following distance in front and behind you, never
tailgate anyone since it poses a safety hazard to anyone in the road, never brake check anyone who tailgates
you since that is a surefire way to cause accidents or on the very least to cause some road rage, do not get
distracted by anything so that you can focus on the road itself and arrive safely.
3. When approaching an exit, you need to slow down accordingly to and put on your turn signal you need to
pay attention to any vehicle stopped at the exit ramp or before it so make sure that you can deal with that
situation by preparing for it beforehand.

How different
conditions affect the
way we drive.
20. Driving on hazardous roads
We face a lot of frequent road and weather conditions that can prove to be dangerous such
random objects in the road, sandstorms, rain and floods.
And we need to deal with each accordingly:
1- concerning objects in the road, use your hazard lights and slow down then avoid the
object to make sure you and other people don’t hit it.
2- for sandstorms, avoid going out if possible due to the danger for the respiratory system
and if you must go out then follow all safety rules while paying extra attention to the road.
3- as for rain, make sure your tires are in a good condition, rain limits the grip tires can
provide so you need to slow down and drive predictably.
4- never EVER cross water streams/floods, every year tens of people die in Saudi Arabia
because of crossing them, it is a serious safety hazard for everyone involved.
21. Driving in difficult conditions
When driving in difficult weather conditions, you should always have your
lights on, having the headlights and taillights on help others see you which
can help you avoid accidents.
When we face fog, we need to slow down and keep a safe following distance
from the vehicle in front and avoid making any sudden movements.
Saudis in 2022 faced
over 1,200 accidents
because of bad
weather conditions.
If it sounds like a bad idea to go out in any condition, it probably is, you should
always trust your gut and not go out unless its necessary.
You should always use low-beam headlights in fog and in other
circumstances, high-beams are for driving at night or in rural roads, not
for poor visibility situations.
22. Making Safe Driving Decisions
You should use highbeams when driving on unlit
roads, you also must double the safe following
to at least 4 seconds minimum so that you can
see animals crossing the street like camels, etc.
When your vehicle starts to
skid ease of the gass pedal, do
not brake, and turn in to the
skid to maintain control of the
vehicle

Main points of the lesson
26. Reporting accidents:
Whenever you face an accident, you should always report it immediately to the appropriate
emergency service.
If inside Saudi Aramco facilities, you should call 911 or (013)872-0911 if calling from a mobile.
If outside of Saudi Aramco, then you can call 998 (Civil defense) or 997 (Ambulance) for road
accidents.
When calling emergency services, you need to be specific in detail of everything that
happened, that ranges from the number of cars and people involved in the accident to the
exact location of the accident and how serious it was.
When you are the first witness of an accident, the responsibility lies on YOU to report the
accident that you saw, The authority of Road safety states that not reporting a road accident can
result in a fine of 10,000 riyals.
27. Dealing With Accidents
Accidents are hard to deal with, so we need to be prepared for when they happen so
that we know how to deal with it and to minimize injuries.

4.
When you find yourself in a minor accident, usually getting insurance information and waiting for
Najm to record the accident is enough, examples like a fender bender, minor vehicle contact, all of
which do not have injuries typically.
If you damage a parked car the least you can do is ask for the owner of the car, otherwise leaving a
note that has the phone number and insurance information should be good enough for most non-
serious accidents
If it’s a more serious accident, the first thing to do is to stay calm as panicking is only going to make
things worse, then you need to safely get yourself out of your vehicle if possible and immediately
contact emergency services, you need to report the whereabouts of the accidents, the number of
people affected, and how bad it was.
you should not try to move injured or unconscious people because you can
do more harm than good because it can cause internal injuries and/or
bleeding that may kill them.
28. Dealing with emergencies
When your Car
Overheats
Sometimes when driving you are going to face some difficulties and emergencies, here are some and how to
deal with them:
When your car overheats, you need to immediately
pull over and stop it to let it cool down, DO NOT try
to open the radiator as it will cause severe burns
and can even blind you.
When your car breaks
down in heavy traffic
When your car breaks down in traffic, you
should pull over, put your hazards on, put the
safety triangle at least 30 meters away from
your vehicle, and call a towing service for help.
