DEFINING YOUR MINIMUM VIABLE TESTING
What will you test?
Think about the phase of the project where you are now. What do you want to discover
more about? Do you have an internal disagreement or two different hypotheses that you
want to test? Where would you like more data to support an idea?
Where is your focus?
Think about the different goals for your testing. Are you focused on usability (can the
user complete tasks or find information)? Do you want more information on brand
perception (trust, tone, first impression)? Are you looking to test knowledge retention (are
users understanding core concepts)?

DEFINING YOUR MINIMUM VIABLE TESTING
How are you going to test?
What testing methods do you plan on using?
☐
Surveys/questionnaires
Surveys/questionnaires are used to collect quantitative data from users about
the experience.
☐
Card sorting
You can do remote or moderated research to prioritize features, develop ideal
workflows or design an information architecture/navigation flow.
☐
Information architecture tree test
Tests the structure and labeling of the website/application.
☐
In-person/moderated usability testing
Conducting this type of testing allows you to gain insights by asking users to try
to complete typical tasks. In-person testing allows the facilitator to watch, listen,
ask follow-up questions and take notes.
☐
Remote/moderated usability testing
Conducting this type of testing allows you to gain insights by asking users to try
to complete typical tasks. Similar to the in-person testing the facilitator is able to
watch, listen, ask follow-up questions and take notes. However, remote testing
comes with it’s own challenges with setting up and sharing screens.
☐
Remote/unmoderated usability testing
Remote usability testing allows you to quickly evaluate the experience by using
a tool to conduct remote user testing. However, with remote testing there isn’t
the ability to ask follow-up questions.
☐
First click testing
Allows you the ability to run tests on individual screens or designs to identify
usability issues and gain first impressions.
