Materials & Aids (what you will need in order to teach this activity):
Dixie cup.
1cup of milk in each cup
Dairy food cards
Camera
Procedures:
a. Focusing event (how you will begin the lesson and attract the children’s attention):
1. Explain that dairy foods (grow foods) are important because they help your
bones to grow and be strong. Without bones, we wouldn’t be able to sit, stand,
run, or play!
b. Student Participation (how you will get the students to participate and stay on task):
1. Ask the children questions
2. Quick activity: Using the flashcards have the children name the dairy food on
the card and say whether they like it or not. Tell them that all of the foods on
the dairy cards are dairy or “grow” foods.
c. Teaching procedures (step-by-step directions for what and how you will teach):
2. Ask the children:
a. Where does milk come from?
b. Why is milk important for our bodies?
c. Can anyone point to one of his or her bones?
2. Give each child a Dixie cup with the milk.
3. Have the children drink the milk to get a “milk mustache.”
d. Closure (how you will end the learning activity):
1. Let the children admire their milk mustaches in a mirror.
2. Take a picture of each child. The pictures can be sent home with children or
mounted on a bulletin board.
Assessment
a. Formative check (progress checks throughout the learning activity):
Give them confidence/ feedback. By saying and asking “Do you feel stronger?”
3. Will you drink more milk?
b. Summative assessment (how you will measure outcomes to determine if the material
has been learned): Worksheet where they circle or discuss the correct foods that’s in the
dairy category.
Adaptations for special needs (based on IFSP or IEP):
1. Collaborate with an adult
Lesson Extensions
For More Practice: Matching game with dairy items.
For More Challenge: Draw a skeleton and have the children glue on q-tips for (strong) bones.
