Their father is gone, but he left them his strength
“HIS heart has stopped beat-
ing.”
With those five words, the
lives of my girlfriend and her
sister were changed forever.
Already without their mum
after losing her to breast can-
cer 16 years ago, their father
finally lost his battle with
cancer in the early hours of
Sunday morning.
To have to say goodbye to
one parent at such a young age
would have been difficult
enough, but to have now lost
them both is just heart-
breaking. My partner and her
sister are incredibly brave and
strong women and they are
holding up pretty well under
the circumstances, thanks to
the amazing support network
they have around them.
Family friends, work col-
leagues, neighbours and
relatives have all been in touch
and visited, and Sunday after-
noon they shared stories and
memories of a man who put a
smile on the faces of everyone
he met.
The girls are obviously
upset, but are relieved their
dad is at peace and no longer
in pain.
They shared some touching
moments together in his final
hours and he left knowing they
were there with him right until
the end.
In times like these it is hard
to know where to turn for
strength, and for most of us we
automatically find comfort
from the voice and words of
our parents.
My girlfriend no longer has
that luxury, but she told me
that in the moments after her
dad’s passing, she instantly felt
all the strength and courage he
possessed inside her.
Given how strong she has
been throughout his long-
lasting ordeal, and given the
strength her father displayed
in his battle, that is a comfort-
ing fact.
While the funeral will no
doubt be emotional, it will also
be a celebration of his life and
all the things he loved — none
more so than his daughters.
Rest in peace, Kim.
