Then the Tourist Office extended its campaign to link with the films (Experience New Zealand, Home of Middle Earth) and since then, tourism has increased by 50%.
Although only 1% state that the films were their primary reason to visit (as opposed to the 6% who siad it was ‘one of the reasons’) that still amounts to NZ$35M and tourism is now the country’s 2nd largest industry employing 6% of the country’s working population.
By 2013, the films had directly contributed NZ$7.3 billion to the economy.
