Currently living in Pasadena, California, Kristopher Dreyer has previously worked overseeing schools such as SB Charter in Detroit and Marantha High School in Pasadena. During his five-year career as CEO, Kristopher Dreyer made meaningful decisions for the school, such as decreasing debt, increasing the number of students, and introducing local produce to the school cafeteria. Led by Chef Jason Franciso, the school cafeteria stopped serving frozen food and began providing students with fresh local produce and new recipes. Incorporating local produce provides many benefits on health and environmental sustainability. Firstly, it helps support farms and workers in the area. Secondly, because the food is much closer, shipping factors become less of an issue. This means that there is less pollution generated, as it takes less energy to travel shorter distances. There may also be more varieties of produce available locally, such as heirloom and organic types not commercially available that are too delicate to survive long shipment processes. For the individual, food also tastes better as it has shorter storage times. In some produce, this also means a better nutritional profile, since storage can also affect nutrition. Finally, it allows consumers to learn from local growers, particularly concerning where and how food is grown.
