For Kingpins' fifth edition in Amsterdam, founder
Andrew Olah expanded his usual trade-show format
with an additional branding-only hall. For the A/W
17/18 edition, Olah collaborated with branding
specialist Kris Dumon for WHY, a new boutique
branding-only show that focuses on innovation,
sustainability and new technologies in branding. The
show, held at the Transformatorhuis building next to
the Kingpins main hall in Westergasfabriek, invited
the top 25 branding, labelling and hardware
providers from around the globe including Panama
Trimmings, Dyneema, Turteks and Prym Fashion
Italia.
The hall also hosted a number of special guests
including Colombian denim specialist Don Matías
Blue Town, as well as Moroccan Denim Cluster
(MDC), which are both promoting their respective
areas of denim production.
On the second day, WHY co-founder Kris Dumon
and Nick Williams, graphic designer and owner of
4th Avenue, hosted a seminar, Branding 101:
Past, Present and Future Branding. It introduced the
history of WHY branding started (in a play on the
event's name), and also explained how branding is
used today, culminating in insights for the future.

embossing and hot-printing technology allow
for more intricate designs on back patches.
Applications evolve in a finer way, with micro

Decorative trims: as well as the wide variety
of branding labels and tags on offer, vendors
also offer a number of decorative
applications, such as custom patches and
tapes, that are ideal for juniors and young
men's markets
Smart technology: specialist vendors explore
the latest interactive technologies such
as RFID, NFC and AR to create smart and
interactive labels. These systems are useful
for inventory management and enhanced

Sustainability is a key focus for many vendors at the show with innovations coming through leather, hardware and
labelling. For leather, chrome-free techniques and natural vegetable-tanned processes are essential, as well as recycled
leather. Buttons are updated through zero-chemical processes and natural dyes for galvanisation as well as recycled
copper. Likewise, labels are updated through recycled materials as well as biodegradable concepts.

With its soft faux-suede quality, jacron is an ideal alternative to leather back patches. Its low price point and sustainable
advantage make it a commercially viable option for mass-market brands. A variety of effects can be used on the material
including hot printing, screen printing and stitching as well as vintage creasing and overdye techniques to create an aged
appearance. Alternatives such as faux leather and recycled leather are also sustainable options.

Select vendors explored the latest RFID (radio-frequency identification), NFC (near field communication) and AR
(augmented reality) technologies to create smart and interactive labels. Patented technologies from Dienpi and
Nexgen communicate with smartphones to provide solutions that support retailer and brand owner initiatives for inventory
management and enhanced consumer experience. Systems are also useful for counterfeiting, traceability and marketing.

Specialist branding vendors move on traditional hot printing with micro hot print techniques and high-frequency 3D effects.
Clean lettering is combined with intricate background textures and patterns, and all-over pattern as well as localised
placement or random 3D effects. With growing interest in sustainability, many vendors shift to chrome-free and vegetable-
dye leathers.

Tactile 3D surfaces are made through the use of relief embossed processes that create raised or recessed relief images
and designs on leather back patches, labels and swing tags. Techniques include negative hot printing, 3D weaves and
micro-fibre printing embossing. Raised surfaces can be used for both statement branding as well as adding a decorative
element to combine with subtle branding notes.

Slick heat-transfer prints offer a clean and contemporary take on denim branding. Vendors present a variety of textures
that range from translucent prints to raised rubber effects or fine wovens. Clean monochrome effects are ideal for
contemporary styling, while high-frequency printing looks right for fashion or modern workwear looks.

Vendors look to a range of innovative print applications such as high frequency, high density and screen printing
techniques. Branding combines hot printing embossing with painterly effects such as watercolour, ombré, paint splatter
and naturally faded looks. These are applied to a range of bases such as jacron, leather, recycled materials and woven
constructions.

As indigo's popularity moves beyond denim and into multiple markets, brands follow suit, treating leather patches, cloth
labels and swing tickets with indigo dips. The natural fade quality of the dyestuff lends itself well to leather patches, as well
as cloth, and creates subtle wear-downs with denim. External labels use high-frequency screen prints to replicate hand-
painted effects.

Woven internal labels are updated with a range of innovative weave techniques. Vendors such as Original Brand and
Nexgen use high-definition labels and high-density damask to create high-quality and durable options. These weaving
methods have twice the density and triple the strength compared with normal damask, while maintaining a combination of
softness and fineness.

More of a decorative element than traditional branding, taping trims are offered by some vendors as an embellishment for
jeanswear. Designs range from faux selvedge to patterned seam tapes and sporty 1990s elastic styles. Prints and
jacquards allow designers to explore a range of decorative ideas. Ideal for side seams, waistbands and internal seaming.
