1. Utilitarianism
Just like anything in life, it is completely possible to take the pursuit of happiness too far. If people take the pursuit of happiness too far other people could get hurt. If a person is so obsessed with their own personal happiness that they disregard the people around them to the point that other people`s lives become meaningless to that person, what is to stop them from furthering their personal happiness through murder or other severe crimes. In a society Utilitarianism would be taken too far if the lives of some of the innocent were sacrificed to help the greater good. As in the case of the Queen vs. Dudley and Stephens, it is morally wrong to sacrifice an innocent against their own even too save the lives of a group.
Of course in a Utilitarian society they would have certain laws in place. One law that would be included is no harming another for your own personal gain. In a society like this things like wages would need to be controlled to help stop jealousy which may cause an uprising and people to get hurt. They would probably have extended vacation periods around the holidays to maximize happiness.
In the Utilitarian world there are certain things that are necessary in order for the good of most that causes pain to some. An example of this would be oil rigs. We need oil for several things, however, these rigs have been known to cause problems with the water supply to nearby homes, and are highly aesthetically displeasing as well as not very environmentally friendly. Nevertheless, until something better comes along, we need these oil rigs for many of our activities, and having them there benefits the collective. Another example is school itself, it is stressful for many young people who are often trying to juggle busy schedules. Though, if it was not a requirement to get educated our literacy rate would be way down, and as adults these people would not know what they need to further their personal growth and become successful.
I believe that the Utilitarian standpoint that we must do things to maximize our happiness and minimize our pain would never work by itself in a society. It would be complete chaos if we were completely utilitarian, if combined with other ideologies, however, Utilitarianism would play a great role in society. I think that we should do things to maximize happiness and minimize pain, but not to the point that other individuals do not matter to us anymore, and our society has become very primal.
