Basketball official spends summer being a "sponge"
By Tim Leighton
MSHSL
EYOTA, Minn. --- Minnetonka’s Kevin Swan would like the
hands of time to slow down just a bit. He says he’s got some
catching up to do.
Swan, who turned 54 on July 4, began his avocation as a
basketball official at age 50. That isn’t the norm for officials
to begin their officiating careers.
“I am up against the clock, so I need to progress quickly,” he
said Friday night.
In doing so, Swan has spent the majority of his summer
soaking up all of the basketball officiating knowledge that he
can. If it isn’t rulebook study, it is working summer league games or attending camps.
This weekend, he is at Dover-Eyota High School participating in the SE Minnesota Officials Camp, the third
of four he will attend this summer. He has already participated in the University of Minnesota women’s
camp and the Midwest Ref Camp. Next weekend, he will travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., for another camp.
“It isn’t overwhelming,” he said. “I love it. I want to get better and keep improving. I can’t get enough of it.”
Swan, a native of Shell Lake, Wis., is a four-year member of Minneapolis Officials Association. He credits
MOA member Whitey Krueger for being a superb mentor and role model. One of the keys, Swan says, is
communicating with veteran varsity-level officials and asking them to observe him.
“I don’t know how many years I have left to do this, that is why there is the urgency to improve in a rapid
manner,” Swan said. “I love all the feedback I get; nothing is too trivial. If I am pointing my fingers the wrong
way or running in a goofy way, let me know. I want to know so I can work on it.”
Swan’s immediate goal is to be selected to officiate in the Minnesota State High School League
tournament. From there, he hopes to officiate at the collegiate level.
This weekend, Swan is hopeful of receiving 15 observations from the clinicians that will be on hand.
“I really want to know what to work on so I can continue working my way up,” he said. “I want to be a
sponge to learn anything and everything.”
