14. Technical Issue
The modernpowergridsystem
15. ProjectSummary
The projectwill buildamodel of ourcurrent powergrid. The model will consistof asignal
generatortoproduce a phasedsinusoidEMwave,twosolarpanels,amotorto simulate awind
generator, andan outletforthe powerthat will enablethe audience toattachdifferentloadson
the system.Usingan oscilloscope, the modelwilldemonstrate the effectsof harmonicson
powertransmissionandwhathappenstothe transmissionwhenloads,like home electronics,
are notfilteredcleanly. The accompanyingpresentationwill explainthe challengesof dealing
withharmonicsandhowa percentage of generatedpoweriswastedjusttotransmititacross
great distances.Additional demonstrationswill highlightthe challengesof incorporatingDCand
nonlinearpowergeneratorsintothe existinggrid.Thisprojectwill be,if accepted,astartupof a
biggereducational project.Once amodel isbuilt, anotherprojectcanentail more conceptsof
integrationof communications,otherformsof renewableenergies,andmore efficient
technologytonotwaste our energyinthe formof ambientheat. These future projectswill
provide opportunitiesforsecondaryandcollege studentstoparticipate inthe designprocessof
integration.
16. ProjectOutcome
The publicwill have agreaterunderstandingof harmonicsandtheireffectonthe powergrid.
Additionally, the publicwill see the challengesof integratingrenewable energyintothe current
gridand some of the effortsunderwaytoimprove orredesignthe currentgrid.
17. Provide detailed demographicinformationaboutthe beneficiariesof the project.
Overthe summer,the projectwill be demonstratedatvarioussummercampshostedbyUT
Dallas. The camps are attendedbychildrenages5-18yearswho reside inDallasandCollin
counties.The mostcampsfocus onSTEM subjectsandofferscholarshipstoensure attendance
of an economicallydiverse population.
The largestaudience will be the attendeesof the State Fairof TexasinOctober. The fairis 24
daysin lengthandover50 school districtsattendthe fairfromCollin,Dallas,Tarrant,and
Dentoncounties.The fairishostedinDallas.Accordingtocity-data.com, the demographicsfor
Dallas(2013) are as follows:population1,257,676; 41.3% Hispanic,29.5% White,23.9% Black,
3.4% Asian,1.9% other;medianhouseholdincome $41.978. The fair’sattendees’demographics
are different, since theyhave alarge attendance frombothrural andurban areas, but the
majorityof studentsandworkersare fromthe immediateDFWarea.

to integratingrenewableenergyonthe currentgrid.
20. OngoingActivity
We hope touse this buildatfuture eventsandbuilduponitas explainedinprojectsummary.
Also,the buildwill provide opportunitiesforsecondaryschool studentstobuildcomponents,
like convertersandfilters, toattachto the grid at a summercamp in2017.
21. ProjectBudget
$10303.00 (see attachedbudget)
22. BudgetJustification
IEEE-UT DallasStudentChapterdoesnothave equipmentthatcanbe takenoff campus. Thus all
itemsforthe buildandpresentationmustbe purchased. The specificsforthe budgetare as
follows.
● Signal generatorisneededtoproduce the phasedsinusoidEMwave
● Oscilloscope needstobe able todetectanddisplaysignal harmonicsproducedinbuild
● Analogcomponentsare forconnectingthe entire systemtogether
● Motor and bladeswill simulate windpowergeneration
● Solarpanelsandconverterswill incorporate solarpowergeneration
● Computerandmonitorare tocontrol the systemandincrease the size displayof signals
to a crowd of approximately10people ata time.Additional presentationmaterial will
be displayed onthe largermonitor.
● Tabletswill be usedtosurveythe audience afterthe presentationtoevaluate the
effectivenessof the project
● The booth rental,twoinsurances,vehiclepermit,andadditionaldailypassesare all
associatedwithhavingdemonstrationspace atthe State Fairof Texas.Since we planto
have three shiftsof 2 studentsthroughoutthe day,additional dailypasses(2/day)are
requiredforstudents’admittance. The vehicle permitwill allow forone vehicletobe
parkedeverydayat the fair forany deliveryneeds.UTDallasprovidesfreetrainpasses
to students, sonoadditional transportationcostsare required. The additional insurance
policiesare requiredof all vendorsatthe State Fair andwill coverunlimitednumberof
volunteersthatworkinthe booth.The boothrental includeselectricityandother
displayneeds,like tablesandchairs.
