A successful business leader and philanthropist, Florida resident Ken Wessel has worked in the fragrance industry for more than 50 years. He founded Wessel Fragrances in 1988 and led the company for two decades before selling it to Takasago International Corporation, Inc. Active in philanthropic endeavors, Ken Wessel has supported organizations that help protect children in the community. In December 2021, the US Department of Justice, through its Office of Justice Programs (OJP), provided funds in conjunction with the National Institute of Justice to the U.S. judicial system to mitigate the compounding issues of child abuse and neglect in the nation. Child abuse and neglect have become rampant in the country. As of 2019, there were over 650,000 reported child abuse cases. This provides funds (roughly 141 million dollars) injected into various child protection programs. The Department of Justice's OJP will help child advocates, law enforcement officials, and child protection service providers get the resources they need to work more effectively through the funding. Part of the funds will help support training and technical assistance programs to help these professionals.
