5. Inspiration
This collection was inspired when I witnessed a member of my family enduring a panic
attack. Untill I saw the frenzy and frightened state people get when having a panic
attack, I never realized how serious they where. For me this image by Anegret Soltau
of a terrrified screaming woman pieced together clearly depicts the crazed state of a
panic attack.

6. Inspiration
As I have never personally gone through a panic attack myself I read a lot of poetry
written by people trying to express how they feel either when they are experiencing a
panic attack or by how panic attacks can affect their daily lives. These knit sculptures
by Greer Taylor perfectly show how people who suffer from panic attacks feel trapped
by the unpredictability of the oncoming of an attack.

7. Experimentation
Using pinking shears I chopped uncontrolled at the fabric, producing various
shapes and sizes of zig zagged edged fabric. Then screwing the fabric up I
freely sewed over them with the zig zag stich piecing them back together. I
did not contol the fabric allowng myself to recreate a feel of panic and frantic
as the machine was incontrol.

8. Fabrics and Colours
To highlight the onset and different strenghts of emotions you feel as you
go through the process of a panic attack I used a gradient from white to
black. White reflect calm and peace and black being the height of anxiety
and panic. For fabric I used the same jersey but in the different shades with
matching wool that I knitted as used as a growth of panic.

9. Experimentation
Using knitted structures coarsing through the garment,
body, reflects the panic growing and spreading through
you as your panic arises. Moreover the knitted formations
retain an elment of being trapped, as you are being
bounded by strips of net, growing to form a huge net
cage encasing you.

Inspiration
Shannon Rankin and other artists who work with creating new ways to depict maps
helped to influence my work as my collection relflects how you can change whilst on
a journey but when you return to the starting point nothing has changed. I focused on
maps to show this as maps are a tool we use when planning where and how to travel.

20. Zell em see
COLOUR PALETTE
I decided to use a colour palette, that most represented
the colours used in maps still today. In particular the map
that Shannon Rankin uses with the layers upon layers
on top of one antoher. The blue for the sea, the green
for land and beige/ tan for mountains. Mixing all these
elements I was able to develop a 13 look collection that
resembles new mapped garments.

21. Print Experimentation
When considering incorporating prints within my concept I
first explored linear map repeat prints taken from the maps
of the places i have visited. However during my development
stages I discovered one map stood out, the map of Cour
Saint Emilion.To grow away from the actual lines of the map
I chose to create a print using a photograph I took whilst
visiting Cour Saint Emilion. I made the photo abstract by
making it int tiny fragmented little maps of colours.

In the UK over 13 MILLION people live in
POVERTY. That's ONE in FIVE who have to
choose between switching on the heating or buying enough
food to put a meal on the table.

33. POOR ACCUMULATION
Poor Accumulation shows the outside versus the indside view
of the life of the people and areas poverty stricken in Britain. As
Britain is a developed country and in the top five richest countries
in the world, poverty is often over looked. Through my project I
want to highlight some of the aspects of poverty. Mainly I focus on
the many layers of belongings, that clutter their lives to give them a
sense of secruity. Versus the windows and structure of the building
they occupy.

34. Structure
Researching window facades allowed me to examine and explore
the different rectangle and square formations of windows. The
symmetry of the formations but also the placement of shape, scale
and size really interested me and informed me when considering
layering fabrics and garments.

Considering how poverty stricken homes accumulate so much stuff
I discovered that today there is a modern day version of Charles
Dickens’s Oliver happening in reality. Parents are getting their
children to steal food, toys etc because as they are under the age
of 10 years old they can’t be charged. This connection to Oliver
reminded me of a recent garment I saw at the Monsters exhibition in
May 2013 by Mareunrd. For me his look represents a modern Fagan.
However the most intriguing aspect of his look is the layered double
opening of the trouser.

37. E X P E R I M E NTAT I ON
Pictured is an example of one of the many different
ways I explored texture and layering whilst trying
to convey my theme. Here I dyed the cotton
fabric in coffee and tea and then once it was wet
I scattered coffee grains ontop, soaking them into
the fabric, creating a more organic polka dot.Then I
layered coffee dyed organza over and sewed it over.

38. COLOURS AND FABRICS
Intially when I was considering fabrics and colours I
took inspiration from the old money bags that banks
used. This enabled me to play with raw egdes and
staining within a colour range of beige, tans and browns.
PRINT EXPERIMENTATION
Through exploring prints I was able to reinforce the aspect of
layering and cluttering that is common in the lives of poverty
stricken homes. Furthermore by using prints it allowed me to
create the illusion of dirty, stained and worn out fabrics whereas
in reality the fabrics would be be unused and of high quality.
