2. A Ball for Daisy
Author & Illustrator: Chris Raschka
Randolph Caldeott Medal Award Winner
Year Awarded: 2012
3. Style & Media
The style is Naïve cartoon art this style of
illustration helps contributeto the “cute”
and innocent message of the story. There
is no text in the book, so the illustrations
mean everything, and they do a great job
at telling the story!
6. Color
The illustrations are not very saturated,
and this makes sense because it is a
dull/simple story! The colors are very
monochromatic, there is tons of colors,
but they are solid colors. And the colors
get dark when the story get intense and
sad. But the illustrations are brightened
once a new ball comes!
7. Texture
The artist used soft colors. I can tell that he used
water paints even, and that is a very soft color
that helps with the story because of the
softness and innocence of Daisy. It is a two-
dimensional illustrated story. Lastly the brush
strokes/layers show the simplicity of setting,
character, and even the mood. When Daisy was
on the couch, the painting was soft and
comforting, which really set the mood.
