Headline: West Monroe’s rebounding is key in winning over Pineville
The West Monroe Lady Rebels defeated the Pineville Lady Rebels, 45-40, by simply
outrebounding them the entire game.
“I thought tonight we rebounded pretty well. We are not the biggest team in the world and I
thought against a team that has the front court size that they do and athletes that they do, that was
a win or lose type of situation. If we don’t rebound, we lose. If we do rebound, we give ourselves
a chance to win,” West Monroe John Green said.
Getting rebounds was not the only challenge Pineville had to overcome in the game. Their lack
of energy caused them to have shots fall flat and play with less intensity against West Monroe.
“I thought we came out flat, no energy. When we were still in the game, we were down 10 or 15
points,” Pineville Coach Tiffany Edmondson said. “We did not shoot the ball well at all. I think
we probably shot 30 percent from the floor. I thought we had good looks at the basket and it just
wasn’t falling. Poor shooting night and no energy.”
In the first half of the game, Pineville could not close the gap to catch up as West Monroe’s
Abby Lee, Jasmyn Johnson, and Jahquell Robinson all made 3-pointers in the first and second
quarters.
In the second half, the Pineville Lady Rebels refused to go down without a fight so they gained
some energy that sparked a fire in them staying within three points behind West Monroe
throughout the quarter. By the end of the third quarter, Pineville had closed the gap between
West Monroe with a score of 27-33.
“I think that both teams played good. I feel like they made us work and we had to come out and
do what we had to do,” West Monroe Sophomore Robinson said.
Point guard Danyale Bayonne, with 12 points, tried her best to get Pineville back in the game in
the fourth quarter. She made a 3-pointer, making the score 37-41, which motivated her
teammates to keep going.
“It was a huge let down because we had a lot of momentum coming into the game thinking that
we had their schemes and we had our schemes and we just came out flat with no energy so it
didn’t come out right. I could have made a lot more shots than I did. As a team, we didn’t get
that many rebounds. We only had 6 offensive rounds,” Bayonne said.
Towards the end of the fourth quarter, Jasmyn Johnson, with 16 points, snuffed out any hope of
Pineville winning by making every free throw.
West Monroe Coach Green said, “I’ve very excited about our girls finishing there at the end.
Pineville is such an outstanding team and they are really a tough team to play.”
