2. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) connects businesses to society and helps them to
participate in overall development of the nation.. Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS)
strongly believes that implementation of different projects for social welfare is not the
end of CSR. To understand the impact of these projects, an organization has to engaged
expert and needs to carry out Social Audit of these projects.
CSR is defined as operating a business in a manner that meets or exceeds the ethical,
legal, commercial and public expectations that society has of business. CSR is seen by
leadership companies as more than a collection of discrete practices or occasional
gestures, or initiatives motivated by marketing, public relations or other business
benefits. Rather, it is viewed as a comprehensive set of policies, practices and programs
that are integrated throughout business operations, and decision-making processes that
are supported and rewarded by top management.

5. An overview of CSR:
CSR is defined as operating a business in a manner that meets or exceeds the
ethical, legal, commercial and public expectations that society has of business.
The study group of the Calcutta seminar on the social responsibilities of
business in the year 1969 emphasized certain other features besides the need
for an enterprise to make a profit. It stressed several responsibilities business
has-(1) to itself, (2) to its customers, (3) to the workers, (4) the shareholders,
(5) the community, and (6)the state.
CSR Vs Gandhian Trusteeship
The Gandhian concept of trusteeship sought to integrate the interests of the
Business Corporation and society through a philosophy of egalitarianism. He
preached a philosophy of voluntary social change; he wanted those possessing
wealth to realize the suffering of the poor, often quoting his own Spartan life
style as an example of a life above ostentation and desire.

Public Perception about CSR
5 point Likert Scale ( 200 Respondents)
10. I believe that social responsibilities of our industrial enterprises should now extend, even
beyond serving people to the environment. This need is now fairly well recognized but
there is still considerable scope for most industrial ventures to extend their support not
only to human beings but also to the land, to the forests, to the waters and to the
creatures that inhabit them. I hope that such need will be increasingly recognized by all
industries and their managements because of the neglect from which they have suffered
for so long and the physical damage that the growth of the industry has inflicted, and still
inflicts on them. Mukesh D. Ambani (Chairman of Reliance industrialist limited) and
Sunil Bharti Mittal (Chairman of Bharti Airtel limited) Due to globalization,
corporations are no longer confined to the traditional boundaries of the nation state. On
one hand, globalization has provided a great opportunity for corporations to be globally
competitive by expanding their production base and market share. On the other hand,
the same situation poses a great challenge to the sustainability and viability of such mega
businesses. Laborers, marginalized Consumers, environmental activists and social
activists have protested against the unprecedented predominance of multi-national
companies (MNCs). The success of CSR initiatives, in future, will largely depend upon
the relationship between the corporate system and the social and political systems. The
notion of a generalized responsibility is not an operational concept, any more than is the
idea of profit maximization.
