1. Co- founding Artistic Director, Greg Tate, passed away on June 3,
2012 after a short struggle with lung cancer. As written in his obituary, Tate
strove to record the joys, beauty, suffering, and injustices in the city of
Hartford; and then shape that into public performance. While celebrating his
life, it was remarked on many times how much Tate influenced generations
of young theater artists. We've created an apprentice program in Tate’s
name to continue his legacy for years to come.
~HartBeat Ensemble
The Youth Play Institute is an 8-week paid internship in acting, playwriting,
theater design or stage management for young adults between the ages of 16
and 21. YPI was conceived to reduce student racial isolation while teaching
theater skills and play creation. This year, HartBeat restructured YPI with a
new emphasis on workforce development and career readiness. During the
2012-13 season, HartBeat will conduct two 8-week sessions, with an
additional 5-week summer program.
