1- VACCINATIONS
Obligatory- Yellow fever
Recommended- Meningitis, Typhoid fever, Hepatitis A, MMR (measles, mumps
and rubella), Polio, Tetanus.
Malaria-
There is a risk of contracting paludism –predominantly via P. falciparum- at all
times of the year and throughout the entire country. Typically, the risk is greatly
reduced in the city of Nairobi and at high altitudes (above 2,500 meters) in the
following provinces: Central, Nyanza, Western, Eastern and the Great Rift Valley.

2- TICKET
If the ticket is booked far enough in advance (approximately 3 months before
departure), and you are flexible with respect to dates and layovers, the two-way
price should come out to about 500-800 euros.
There is no direct flight from Spain to Nairobi.
The principal cities from which you can connect to Nairobi are:
Cairo, Qatar, London, Amsterdam, Rome and Istanbul.

3- VISA
You can obtain a tourist visa directly in the Nairobi airport for approximately 40
euros/50 USD. It lasts for 3 months.
4- CURRENCY
Kenya’s currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KSH).
1 euro is worth approximately 110 KSH. We recommend that you travel with Euros
and exchange them for KSH at the airport (if you are travelling directly to
Kabarnet) or in a non-commission currency exchange office (if you are travelling to
Nairobi). In Kabarnet there are many banks and ATMs where you will be able to
exchange and take out money.

5- WHAT TO BRING
Light summer clothing. A jacket and a few long-sleeved shirts and sweaters
because it gets cooler at night (approaching 13ºC). Comfortable shoes—sneakers or
hiking shoes. If you travel in June, July or August, be sure to bring a raincoat and
closed-toed shoes because this is the rainy season.
We recommend that you bring Ibuprofen and Paracetamol. If you don’t end up
using them, you can leave them in the BAMBA classroom for the children in the
community or for the women in the NEEMA group. Also bring an international
adaptor, a flashlight and sunscreen.
If you wish to bring something for the children, you are completely welcome to do
so.
- If you plan to bring scholastic material (pencils, books written in
English, notebooks . . . ), we recommend that you buy them in
Kabarnet because they will undoubtedly be cheaper and you will
not run the risk of having to pay excess baggage fees.
- In our experience, it is best to bring things that have a value far
superior to what you pay for them in terms of weight or volume.
Such items include DVDs in English (documentaries and movies)
and (functional) secondhand laptops.
6- TEMPERATURES IN KABARNET
Temperatures in Kabarnet are agreeable all year long. The average temperature is
25º and it’s a dry climate. At night it can get down to 13ºC. The rainy seasons last
from October to December and from April/May to July.

9- MEDICAL INSURANCE
It is imperative that anyone wishing to visit our project in Kabarnet obtain
traveller’s health insurance. If you have private insurance you should consult with
them about what coverage they can offer. Once you have confirmed the trip to

Kabarnet you will need to send a copy of your insurance to
bamba@bambaproject.es at least two weeks before the date of your trip.
ONCE IN KENYA·
1- AIRPORT
The main airport is JOMO KENYATA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. It is located in
Nairobi, 20 minutes from the city. The average price for a taxi to the center of
Nairobi is between 1700 and 2000 KSH (17-20 euros).
If you need a taxi, we can recommend a reliable one to you that will find you in
the terminal and accompany you to your hotel.
If you have to spend the night in Nairobi we recommend that you stay in the
International Guest House (prices between 15-20 euros per night with dinner and
breakfast included).
Another option is Backpackers Milimani, which has very reasonable prices (750-
1200 KSH/7,5-12 euros). Both offer airport pickup service (1700 KSH/17 euros) and
organize excursions to national parks at an affordable price.
2- HOW TO GET TO KABARNET
By highway- Take a matatu
(privately owned minibus):
Nairobi-Nakuru (2.30-3h aprox)
------ Cambio Matatu --------
Nakuru-Kabarnet (2.30-3h aprox).
Total trip length: 6-7h (Aprox
800ksh- 7e)
A matatu is used for local transport
and in Kenya usually consists of a
van with 14 seats.
Advantages: The only advantage is
that of being the most economical
means of transport. A trip of 2.30h
will usually cost you 400-450ksh
(3,5-4e)
Disadvantages: Insecurity. It is the most dangerous
mode of transportation in Kenya. It is impossible to
predict the amount of time that it will take the

matatu to get going. Its general rule is that it does
not leave until it is full.
o Plane (RECOMMENDED)- there are domestic flights
available through the company www.fly540.com that
offer direct flights from Nairobi-Eldoret starting at
65e. The duration is 45min.
o Once in Eldoret the only option is to travel by
highway. The duration is approximately 2.5 hours.
You have 2 possibilities:
1- Take a taxi to the Eldoret matatu station (20 min
aprox/precio 1500ksh) + matatu Eldoret-Kabarnet
(2.5 hours aprox). Average price of a matatu
350/400ksh.
2- Or you can reserve in advance direct pickup from
the Eldoret airport through Ruto (BAMBA
Coordinator). The approximate price is 6000ksh
(car rental and gas) and you will have to pay it
directly once you are in the airport.

3- KABARNET
Kabarnet is a city with approximately
45,000 inhabitants situated 1600
meters high in the Rift Valley (Kerio
Valley).
The predominant cultura of the zone
is Kalenjín. You may be familiar with
the athletic brand DECATHALON’s
‘kalenji,’ which was inspired by this
tribe because of the high number of
Olympiic medals won by its distance
runners. The altitude and geographical conditions of the zone have made it
a cradle for great athletes.
As this is not a touristic area, don’t be surprised if
people seem shocked to see a mzungu (white
man). Surely upon your arrival you will feel a bit
overwhelmed by the constant attention of children
who will happily scream out at you “Mzungo!
Mzungo!”
As you can see, it is a rather closed culture that is
not accustomed to tourism and therefore there are not many tourist-
oriented activities.
If you are looking for Western company, this is probably not the place for
you. If you are looking for the same lifestyle and commodities that you
have in Europe, you probably don’t want to come here.
We want you to be conscious of the radical cultural differences and
prepared to not see other white people for the duration of your time in
Kabarnet.
At the same time, the character of the locals is very hospitable and servile.
They will be delighted to have you in the zone. Security is tight and
dangerous incidents are very infrequent in Kabarnet. However, it is
advisable that you take minimal security measures, as in any other
unfamiliar place. In general, you can walk calmly at almost any time of
day.

MAIN RULE·
The most important rule, which you should always be aware of, is the
following: DON’T GIVE MONEY TO ANYBODY. Although people do not often
ask for money in the street, it can happen here. In this case we ask that
you please DON’T GIVE THEM ANYTHING. As much as you might think that
you are helping them, you are actually accomplishing the complete opposite
by destroying the local economy and perpetuating the belief that the white
man is rich and can give easily. This will eventually cause the people to
develop the habit of asking instead of working, so that they can acquire
wealth easily. Giving money to children is an even more serious mistake
because in the long run, you are depriving them of their right to study (this
is what happens in much of North Africa). Please, for the benefit of
everyone, don’t give money to anyone.
3.1. PLACES OF INTEREST
Kabarnet is a small, unifrom twon
situated between two large
valleys. It consists of a main
street that is approximately 2 km
long, of which the main activity is
commerce. It is not an especially
beautiful place, so it may not be
for you if you were hoping to go
sightseeing within the city.
However, it is surrounded by
valleys with impressive views that
offer the opportunity to go trekking, although it is best to do this at the
local level because the trips are disorganized and every traveler must be
autonomous and independent in order to complete the treks at his own
pace. You can always count on the help of Rutto, a native and the BAMBA
Coordinator, as he will be pleased to accompany you if you are otherwise
travelling alone. As previously stated, it is not a dangerous zone and you
can safely go on excursions all over the Kerio Valley area.
We can help you and tell you about routes that we did ourselves and found
to be interesting. Here are a few:
BARINGO LAKE
40 km from Kabarnet, this is a
natural park with a great variety
of wild animals including birds,
crocodiles and hippopotamuses.
It is known as one of Kenya’s main
tourist attractions and
surprisingly, unlike the rest of the
natural parks, the entrance fee

for the park is very economical (approx 900KSH/ 9e with local guide
included).
We recommend that you take a one-hour boat ride in order to see more
animals (approx 600ksh).
The prices of most other parks in the area range between $30-60 per day, so
you can see that this is a great opportunity to enjoy the essence of Kenya
without paying a fortune.
EXCURSION FROM KIRANDICH RIVER TO KAPKOMOI (4h)
4km from the center of Kabarnet
you find a path to Kirandich River,
which was converted to a dam in
2001.
From up high, it is possible to
observe the peak of the mountain
that constitutes the final stage of
the excursion.
After climbing paths that are
reminiscent of the Sierra de Tramuntana completely alone, you can find a
small African village where you can stop to have a tea or a soda.
This zone and the surrounding area are very rural and it is posible that the
people there have never encountered a white man before. When you pass
by the town’s school, don’t be surprised if the entire school comes out to
receive you as you’re passing by.
If you want to eat out we recommend:
-Sinkoro Hotel (in Kabarnet town)
-Milimani Hotel (600m). You’ll have to let Pamela know that you’re coming
to eat about 2 hours ahead of time (phone- 0703634609) and she will
prepare the BAMBA menu for you (approx 200ksh):
- Chapati
- Salad made of onion, avocado, hard-boiled egg and tomato
- Fruit salad (plantain, mango and pineapple)
Other points of interest that you can’t miss include: Lake Bogoria (natural
park. 30km away) / Marigat (animal market. 30 km away)/ Iten (city of
runners. 45km away) / Eldoret and Nakuru (closest cities)
Sego ** (Excursions in the heart of the Rift Valley. 15km away).
We recommend that you calla head by at least 40 minutes so that the food
will be ready for you, since it can take more than an hour and a half to be
served. They also have rooms available for 2800ksh/individual room or
3800ksh/double room.

If you want to organize a short tripa round Kenya, we strongly recommend
that you visit Lamu y Masai Mara. If you decide to visit Lamu, it is
imperative that you stay in Shella and not in Lamu town or in Manda.

3.2.LANGUAGE
Kiswahili and English. Almost 80% of the population of Kabarnet speaks
English so in general, you won’t have communication problems. Having an
intermediate level of English is imperative.
3.3.TRANSPORT
It is important to note that we do not make vehicles available to you, as it
would complicate the visit and the realization of local excursions. There is
always the possibility of renting an older one for 3000-5000 ksh (30-50
euros) per day. Because there is not a lot of demand, the prices are
abusive. You would also be responsible for paying for gas.
We recommend that you speak with Ruto and have him organize the vehicle
for you. Try to do it at least 24 hours in advance and prepare yourselves to
drive the oldest car that you have ever driven.
3.4. PRICES (in Kabarnet)
It is vital that you keep this list of prices in mind. In general, the people of
the zone conceive that the white man is a millionaire and it isn’t unlikely
that they will try to raise the prices of anything that you might want to buy.
This doesn’t happen often in restaurants or supermarkets, but it is common
in the marketplace, with transportation services and with street vendors. In
general, food in Kabarnet is relatively cheaper than on the coast or in
Nairobi. On the other hand, transportation costs double.

3.5. BAMBAHOME
Bamba Home 1- It is a circular structure 6m in diameter with a briar roof
similar to those of authentic African houses. The only difference is that the
walls are made of bricks and cement rather than adobe. It contains a two-
person bedroom and a bathroom with a hot-water shower.
Bamba Home 2 and 3- Smaller, square structures. Individual homes.
The views are spectacular because they are oriented toward the Rift Valley
and the light is very special because it comes from the West.
The surroundings of the little houses have not yet been worked on, but our
intention is to fill them with fruit trees and bougainvillea.
PRICES
Below we outline our prices per person/week. We are aware that you are
travelers so we have adjusted the prices as much as possible to help you
while ensuring that the project workers do not lose money.
- Patrons/owners of African houses: 40€/week (per person)
All board included
- Other travelers and volunteers: 80€/week (per person) All
board included
The person in charge of and responsable for the travellers’ houses is
Christine, Ruto’s wife, so please contact her directly with any questions or
doubts related to the houses or the classroom.
LAUNDRY- If you need to do laundry, you can give your bag to MamaJemu
and she will wash it for you and hang it in front of the BAMBAhome.

We recommend that if you ask for this service, the right thing to do is pay
her directly at least 300ksh (3e) so that she can have some extra money.
Although she will do it for you for free, we believe that it’s better
symbolically so that she is recognized for her work.
Payment for your time here must be completed at least 15 days before
the trip by means of a bank transfer to our CC number either in Spain or
in Kenya. It will be used to cover the following expenses:
- Food: 20€/week
- Upkeep of the houses (wáter/electricity/repairs) &
support for community projects: 20€/week
- Education: 40€/week (support for the expenses of
secondary students, the community and the orphanage)

3.6. THE BAMBA CLASSROOM
Christine is in charge of organizing, teaching you where
cameras and materials are, and explaining what you need
to do in the event that you are unsure.
Here we give you some ideas about activities that can be
done:
- Photography Workshops. The children
love to get their hands on cameras.
They are happy and hungry to learn
anything they can about photography. Feel free to grab the
cameras and take them on an excursion in the mountains,
in the city or by the river.
- Technology Workshops. We recommend that you organize
the children in groups of 3 so that you can teach them how
to use Word, Excel or a photo-editing program.
- Geography, math or English classes for older or younger
kids.
- Drawing and tracing for the youngest kids.
In addition to the activities that you can develop in the classroom, there is
also the option of completing the following:
- Visit the community children (Christine/Esther)
- Help the children write letters to and make drawings for
their sponsors (1st Saturday of every month)
- Help out with the projects and construction that we have in
progress (Rocío/ Ruto)
- English/technology clases for the women’s group Neema
- Help with the Neema women’s shamba (orchard)
- Explore the valley and give us ideas for excursions

3.7. THE CHILDREN OF THE SUNRISE ORPHANAGE
500m from the
BAMBA project is the
SCH Orphanage. The
majority of the
orphanage’s children
are orphans because
of the HIV/AIDS
pandemic. There are
also cases of
abandonment and
abuse. Some of their
biographies can be
shocking at first, but
in general the
children aren’t
stigmatized at all and have a very positive and happy attitude. They
themselves have no shame in personally explaining their origins to you
because they are not embarrassed by their personal stories. On the
contrary, they are proud to have been reborn from the ashes and this has
given them a strength and energy that will leave you impressed. What they
most enjoy is learning new things, singing and dancing. They are Christian
protestants and it is not strange for them to pray for an hour a day. We
recommend that you attend one of their daily masses (devotion time)
because it is an interesting and unique experience that will help you to
better understand their culture and their way of life. Their way of
practicing religion is very different from ours so we suggest that you observe
it close up and without prejudice.
It is important to remember that you can’t give them money. If you want
to give them a gift you are completely free to do so. We recommend that
you do not give them candy (the candy sold here has a lot of chemical
ingredients that would be prohibited in Spain) because it can destroy their
teeth. Instead, you can buy them books, notebooks, shoes or fruit. Another
option is to cook them a typical dish from your country (as long as you don’t
mind cooking for 40). They love to change things up as they are a bit bored
of eating ugali and githeri almost every day.
What can they offer you? They can show you the dances of the different
tribes of Kenya and give you a crash course in kiswahili.
Since 2014 and due to a change in the leadership of the orphanage, BAMBA
has decided not to have any link with the Sunrise Children’s Home
orphanage. Our collaboration is solely based on paying for part of the
children’s education and it is realized directly, independent of the SCH.

3.8. BAMBA PROJECTS

3. Travelers’ Program
Bamba currently consists of these 3 projects directed at improving the
quality of life of at-risk families in the community of Kabarnet. Because we
have not yet completed an adequate physical center, we are temporarily
managing our activities from the travelers’ zone and the Bamba classroom.
We are also working on the construction of a community center that will
help us greatly in centralizing our work and optimizing our resources in a
direct way, giving better coverage to the Kabarnet community. It will
consist of:
- A social dining area
- A women’s center
- 3 schools ( 3-6 years old)
- 1 Baby room
- Conference room
- Bathrooms and showers
- 2 storehouses
- Garden shed
- Travelers’ houses

4- FINAL NOTE
Bamba Project (Spain) is composed of people that have jobs that are
completely independent of Bamba. Therefore we do not earn a salary for
the activities that we carry out here. Neither are the prices of our tickets
to Kenya subsidized, and we need to use our own money to carry out all
work associated with the project.
We try to balance our other work with what we do for BAMBA, but it is
impossible to be in two places at once and it is sometimes difficult to
manage the project in person.
The local workers will take care of you in the best manner possible and will
give you all of the information that you need.
We guarantee that the experience will feel more intense and authentic to
you when you travel by yourselves and do not come into contact with any
other white people for the duration of your trip. In this way you will live in
and understand the project, the city and the culture better than you would
have if you were surrounded by your peers.
On this trip, you can expect that your perspective on things will be altered
radically and that you will learn to rethink your conception of the world and
of time. Let that happen without resisting. We guarantee that you will not
regret this experience and that you will return much more full of happiness
than when you left.

ADVICE FROM BAMBAHOME
Environment
Please in order to optimize the resources and to be respectful with the
environment, we will appreciate if you follow these advices:
Don’t throw toilet paper in the W.C. There is a bin in the toilet that you can
use.
Water is limited in this area, mostly in dry season, so we request you to do a
responsible use of it.
The sockets of the Bamba Home don’t support high voltage. Its better if you
just plug one thing at the time. (Never boiler with the electric kitchen or
hair drier).
Safety
Bamba wont be responsible for money or valuable lost in the traveller’s
house. Please make sure you lock the door when you leave the house.
Laundry service
Mama Jemu will organize your washing and will leave your clothes drying in
front of the traveller’s house. We will appreciate if you can pay directly to
her 300 ksh per bag.
Internet:
Internet services are not included. In case you need to use internet you will
have to charge the orange USB. (Aprox 700ksh- 1GB)

BAMBA SINCE 2010 supports the community of Kabarnet in:

80.000ksh (Sponsor Community program) in order to pay mainly:

sustainability of the project.

NORMAS BAMBA. PROGRAMA VIAJEROS 2015
1- Queda terminantemente prohibido publicar imágenes de menores (niños del
orfanato y niños de la comunidad) con fines de promoción personal o de
lucro. Para cualquier tipo de publicación/impresión que el viajero quiera
llevar a cabo, deberá consultar antes a la organización y solicitar autorización
por escrito.
2- En caso de querer realizar actividades fuera del recinto del orfanato con los
niños del orfanato SCH, el viajero deberá pedir autorización a la Junta de
Sunrise Children’s Home.
3- Queda totalmente prohibido dar dinero o regalos directamente a los niños. Si
el viajero quiere hacer una donación o regalar ropa, juguetes, etc que haya
traído, es libre de hacerlo pero deberá de entregarla a Christine y a Rutto
para su gestión responsable. Serán ellos los que la entreguen a los niños.
Los viajeros no pueden entregar regalos a los niños directamente.
4- Queda totalmente prohibido que el viajero lleve a cabo directamente y por su
cuenta, gestiones que afecten a la educación de los niños. La selección del
colegio se lleva a cabo únicamente por los coordinadores Rutto y Christine
en base a un criterio académico y sus circunstancias familiares.
5- No se pueden solicitar servicios de carácter personal al grupo de mujeres
NEEMA. Si el viajero quiere solicitar la fabricación de alguna prenda deberá
realizarse al margen del aula Bamba y sus instalaciones.
6- El viajero que quiera solicitar una dieta especial, deberá hacerse cargo de los
gastos por su cuenta.

1- It is strictly prohibited to publish images of minors (children from the
orphanage or children from the community) for the purpose of personal
promotion or gain. For any type of publication/printout that the traveler wants
to complete, he must first consult the organization and solicit written
authorization.
2- If a traveler wants to carry out activities with the SCH children off of the
premises of the orphanage, he must ask for authorization from the Sunrise
Children’s Home board.
3- It is strictly prohibited to give money or gifts directly to the children. If the
traveler wants to make a donation or give gifts that he has brought such as
clothing, toys, etc., he is free to do so, but he must give them to Christine and
Rutto so that they can be managed responsibly. They will be the ones to give
the gifts to the children. The travelers cannot give gifts directly to the
children.
4- It is strictly prohibited that the traveler directly arrange or pay for a child’s
education. Selection for the school is fulfilled solely by the coordinators Rutto
and Christine on the basis of academic criteria and family circumstances.
5- It is not permitted to solicit services of a personal nature from the NEEMA
women. If the traveler wants to ask for a garment to be made, he must
accomplish this outside of the Bamba classroom and its facilities.
6- If a traveler wishes to follow a special diet, he must pay for all related
expenses himself.
