What does NEACRAO stand for?
NEACRAO is the New England
regional association of AACRAO,
the American Association
of Collegiate Registrars and
Admissions Officers, whose purpose
is “to promote the advancement
of higher education in its fullest
and broadest implications.” We
are an all-volunteer organization
dedicated to supporting close
to 1,000 members representing
approximately 150 institutions from
Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts,
New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and
Vermont.
What are the benefits of joining?
Attending a NEACRAO conference,
professional development session,
or joining the team can help you
expand your resume, increase
your professional network, and
grow your professional skills and
competencies. Challenge yourself
in a new direction, make life-long
friends, and have fun doing it!
How can I get involved?
• Facilitate a session: introduce
a session at Reverse College Day
or the Annual Conference and
coordinate evaluations. Easy to do
and a quick way to get involved!
• Join a committee: most
committees work with the vice
presidents to create Annual
Conference and RCD sessions and
activities for the organization.
• Serve as a co-chair: co-
chairs coordinate and run the
various portions of RCD and the
Conference.
Get to Know NEACRAO
• Join the Board: the Executive
Board governs the Association
and is responsible for its overall
activities and functions. Attendance
at day or day-and-a-half meetings
in January, March, and June are
expected.

Conference Keynote Speaker
Time management is out.
Time leadership is in!
Time is an intangible
commodity that leaves so
many people wondering
how to handle it. Don’t just
manage your time–lead with
it! With “time leadership,”
today’s busy professionals
can take the lead in their day
by doing small and practical
techniques that will cultivate
positive habits to increase
clarity, boost productivity, and
add more meaning into full
schedules. Come see how you
can eliminate the old concept
of “time management” by
replacing it with effective “time
leadership.”

Conference Session Descriptions
Session One
Descriptions
Session 1: Thursday,
November 5, 9–10 a.m.
1A: Do You Want to Manage or
Lead? Weatherly
Come to this workshop for an
overview of four of the main
components that may be separating
you from being a good leader. We
will discuss how to hold an effective
meeting where ideas are shared, rather
than tasks distributed; team building;
holding trainings that are effective; and
leadership development. It all begins
with respect and working from people’s
strengths.
Presenter:
Colleen Walsh, Director of Student and
Alumni Services, Lawrence Memorial/
Regis College
1B: Understanding Admissions

students.

Sciences, Harvard University
Ari Kaufman, Associate Registrar-
Operations, Berklee College of Music
Bryn Nowell, Senior Admissions
Counselor, Holyoke Community College
1D: Course Scheduling—Who’s
on First? Courageous
We all have favorite parts of our job
as well as areas that we dread. For the
sake of discussion, let’s compromise
and say that the preparation of a
course schedule falls somewhere
in between. It’s an opportunity to
interact with department chairs
and impact creating optimal course
delivery scenarios, assuring that
students have access to a variety
of courses distributed throughout
the day. On the flip side, there is an
unnamed contingent who wants to
deliver courses in a manner, location,
and time frame that best suits
them. That said, we all face issues
concerning the building of a schedule
13. 13

including the determination of time
slot allotment, room ownership,
faculty and department preferences,
the prioritization of space, time,
technology, and room type.
Presenter:

and More Freedom
Join Steve McDonald, NEACRAO’s
resident FERPA expert, for a
presentation on the structure and most
significant provisions of FERPA, latest
guidance, and proposed amendments.
It’s the law that we would like to forget
about (and sometimes do) but that
affects virtually every facet of our work.
Whether you’re a FERPA newbie or a
FERPA maven, and regardless of what
office you work in, there is something
for you in this session. As always, your
questions, concerns, and experiences
(good, bad, and especially bizarre) are

Descriptions
Session 2: Thursday,
November 5, 10:30 a.m.–12 p.m.
2A: Hiring to Fill a Void, Not a
Position Columbia
There is more to the hiring process
than just posting an ad, picking out
a few good resumes, interviewing
several people, and making an offer.
It is a process that requires some
planning if one wants to make the
best hire possible. Learn how to
manage the first interview to reveal
each candidate’s skill sets, personality
type, and attitude. Find expert tips
on legal reference checks and how to
use the information to inform your
final decision. Come to this session
prepared to interact with others and
pick up a packet of sample hiring
documents so you don’t have to start
from scratch.

2D: Best Strategies for Working
with Helicopter and Velcro
Parents Weatherly
In this session, we will explore the
ever-increasing participation of
parents in the higher education
experience. While some seem to hover
around their students and are referred
to as “helicopter parents”, there are also
those that cling more tightly, inspiring
the newer term “velcro parents”. We
will discuss various contributors to
this phenomenon and will also share
strategies for partnering with parents
in meaningful and effective ways.
Privacy laws, including HIPAA and
FERPA, will be discussed as they
relate to the confidentiality of student
records.

3B: Baby Boomers, X, Y
& Beyond: Managing the
Generations Weatherly
This session will explore the challenges
of managing multiple generations in a
constantly changing higher education
environment. It will explain how each
generation has its own work style
shaped by key life events and examine
how to leverage strengths through
adaptive management practices.
Presenter:

3C: Supporting Our Student
Veterans Columbia
Since 9/11, over two million men and
women have served in the military.
Nearly 80% of those have served in
a combat zone or actually been in
combat. About 50% of those who saw
combat come home with psychical,
emotional, or psychological injuries.
These issues are roadblocks for success
in higher education. Many veterans
start college; many do not finish.
How can we help veterans to learn
the life and coping skills they need to
succeed in education? This session
reviews important skills veterans need
to successfully reintegrate into the
civilian world.

Robert Mayer, Director of Veteran
Services, Mount Wachusett Community

With the rise of MOOCs, SPOCs,
DOCCs, and other innovations, how
is the classroom experience changing
on campus? Are these technologies

November 5, 3:45–4:45 p.m.
4A: Presenting with Confidence
Courageous
In the workplace, communicating well
is essential. For many people, the very
idea of giving a presentation induces
terror. For others, it may just be a case
of butterflies in the stomach. Whatever
your comfort level, this session will
give you solutions for overcoming or
dealing with the fear of speaking in
public. And once you do present, you
don’t want folks snoozing during your
presentation! So, we will also address
the elements that make a presentation
engaging and that hold the interest
of your attendees. This session will
give you the tools you need to present
dynamically and with confidence.
Presenter:
Mary Meserve, Registrar, Bates College
4B: Creating a Caring
Community on Your Campus
Weatherly
A Caring Community is one that
supports the emotional, psychological
and physical health of members of the
university community. This initiative
would be designed to work in concert
with other university resources.
Creating a Caring Community would

exemplar programs for guidance, and
program evaluation procedure and
guidelines.
Presenter:
Jennifer Hammond, Information
Technologist, University of New
Hampshire
4C: International Credential

6A: Registrar’s Roundtable/Open
Forum Freedom
When you come up with a new idea or
want to change a current process, what
direction do you often get from above?
“What’s everyone else doing?” Well,
this is the place to come to find that
elusive answer. Always popular, always
a favorite! This will be an open forum
for discussion of issues or current topics
concerning the policies and practices
in a registrar or records office. Topics
will depend on interests of attendees,
but may include compliance with
regulations, best practices, helpful hints
or tips, distribution of responsibilities,
outsourcing options, etc. Bring your
questions or concerns and share your
experience, or simply absorb the
