Why is the Ocean Blue? (Pourqiou Tale by Kate Borlasa)
1. WHY IS THE OCEAN
BLUE?
AN ORIGINAL STORY BY KATE BORLASA
ILLUSTRATED BY HERSELF
2. A long, long time ago, the ocean
had no color. It was so clear that
everything underneath was so
easy to see. Even in the deepest
abyss.
3. Under the deepest part of the
ocean stood a palace where the
king of the ocean lived. He was
King Cynbel, protector of the
underwater world.
4. The ocean was full of treasures
and was the habitat of wonderful
sea animals. This beauty
attracted humans into the sea.
5. It was so easy for them to catch
fishes and spot the most
precious pearls underneath. The
humans would catch beautiful
fishes and bring them back to
land. They would empty all the
clams that had pearls in it.
6. King Cynbel was alarmed by the
disappearances of what the ocean
owned. The humans had nearly
emptied out all the riches and
creatures of the ocean. He feared
that the humans might discover his
palace where he shelters the
mermaids and fishes of the ocean.
7. The humans wanted more and
more that they dared to delve in
deeper to see what shone
brightest underneath. It was King
Cynbel’s palace and the humans
wanted to invade it.
8. This had greatly angered
the King. “You keep on
claiming what you do not
own,” he thought. This
time he knew that he had
to take an action before
the humans infested the
great ocean kingdom.
9.
10. King Cynbel struck his powerful
trident and the ocean magically
turned to blue! It grew darker as the
ocean grew deeper until no more
light could penetrate the deepest
part of the sea.
11. The ocean was no longer crystal
clear. Although the most
beautiful sea creatures now
dwelt in the deepest and darkest
blue of the ocean, the kingdom
remained undisturbed and had
lived peacefully.
12. And for all mere humans who still greed to search for
the riches of the ocean, they will never find it.
