Introduction
With resources quickly diminishing it is up to institutions and individuals to begin
to investigate the new forms of energy. The need to conserve energy as it
increasingly becomes scarcer and expensive is real and something that must be
factored in institutions and our homes. Energy prices for instance are projected to
rise by an average of 10% per year over the next 10 years prompting a need to
turn to other forms of energy and compliment/supplement power from the grid.
Solar will be the best answer to the problem with diminishing non-renewable
energy. There is an enormous potential to mitigate the impact of rising energy
costs through use of solar energy. Solar energy sector in Kenya has changed and
the government is encouraging small & large scale solar PV and solar water
heating installations to ease pressure on power from the national grid (Kenya
Power).
At SolarEdge we believe that the best way to provide basic energy needs to the people
across the economic spectrum: the bottom of the pyramid to the top of it.

Solar water heating
More than 50% of energy bills for households and
institutions like hospitals, accommodation facilities, boarding
schools are contributed by water heating.
SolarEdge would be confident to propose Solar water
heating as the primary source of your water heating needs.
Solar water heating stands out as a proven, reliable, simple
and effective solution that lowers a total electricity bills
through using the sun’s free energy to supply hot water by
up to 65% on overall energy savings. Solar water heating
generates savings for institutions and households since it
provides 90% of hot water requirements during sunny
months and up to 40% during overcast months.
Solar water heating systems provide quality hot water at a
lower cost than heating with electricity, gas, wood, and
diesel. Solar collectors are typically designed to last for over
25 years with little maintenance. These systems give a yearly
non-taxable return on your money - even for a two person
household. It is also important to remember that hot water
is a constant daily expense.

Return on investment
In this calculation assume that gas and electricity prices, maintenance charges and fossil fuel
savings grow by 7% per year.
We will take water heating costs to be around 40% of you total electricity costs. The
average electricity bills for a fully occupied four bed roomed house are approx Kshs.
15,000 per month. This is Kshs.180,000 annual electricity bill. Taking 40% of annual
electricity bills as water heating bills this will translate to Kshs. 72,000 spent on water
heating annually. Add your annual maintenance charge to get total annual fuel costs. This
means that annual water heating costs may end up being Kshs. 80,000 per year.
Increase fuel and electricity costs, maintenance charges and fossil fuel savings at 10% per
year. This means that the price for other energy sources will continues to increase year
after year whereas there is no price for the sun. Indications are that pointing to more
incentives for adoption of renewable energy meaning that the price for the solar water
heating equipments will go down further. If the currents trends are anything to go by,
energy prices are bound to continue going up by at least 10% per year making it even
more costly.
Considering that average price for a fully installed 300 liters system costs approx. kshs.
180,000. This system can serve up to five people. Going by our earlier conservative figure
of kshs. 72,000 per year this means that your total outlay for solar water heating will
usually have been recovered in 3 years or less. Solar water heating systems lasts over 20
years meaning that you will be using the system for over 17 years without recurring
expenses. For institutions like schools, hospitals and business ventures like guest houses
and other accommodation facilities, return on investment can be even shorter and
increase profitability.
You will obviously save a proportion of your energy costs every year and this will grow as
energy prices increase. Beyond the payback period (which will probably be shorter than
you think) your solar water heating system will be providing around 80% of annual water
heating FREE.

Plug into the sun for FREE energy! Become energy
independent, reduce your utility bills, protect yourself
against blackouts and reduce environmental
pollution!
Solar PV modules convert sunlight to electricity. The PV
modules generate DC electricity - or direct current -
sending it to the inverter. The inverter transforms the
DC power into AC electricity for ordinary household
needs. Existing electrical panel distributes solar
electricity and utility power to loads (appliances). For
systems with a battery backup (optional), the inverter
or charge controller also regulates the charge of
batteries. The electricity stored in the batteries can be
used at night or during blackouts.
A valuable feature of solar PV systems is the ability to
connect with the existing power grid which allows
owners to sell excessive electricity back to the utility
with a plan known as Net Metering. At times when you
are not using all of the electricity produced by your
system, your meter will spin backwards selling the
electricity back to the utility power grid at retail rate.
GreenRays Energy would like to recommend Net-
metering for those who want to be nearly 100%
energy-bills free.

Grid-tied Solar PV System
Inter-tie systems use an inverter that converts the
energy collected from the PV panels into
conventional AC power and feeds it to your
electrical circuit breaker panel. As long as there is
enough electricity flowing in from your PV system,
no electricity will flow in from the utility company.
If your system is generating more power than you
are using, the excess will flow back into the grid,
turning your meter backwards.
Grid-Connected System is the simplest and most cost
effective way to connect PV modules to regular
utility power. Grid-Connected systems can supply
solar power to your home and use utility power as
a backup. If utility power is reliable and well
maintained in your area, and energy storage is not
a priority, you don't necessarily need a battery. But
if the utility power goes down, even if there is solar,
the PV system will be off for the safety of the utility
workers.
Grid-Connected System with Battery Backup can supply
power 100% of the time: At night, on cloudy days
and when the utility power is down.

Solar Electric (or Solar PV) systems
convert sunlight to electricity. The
systems consist of modules - or solar
panels - inverter, charger and batteries.
The PV modules generate DC electricity
and send it to the inverter, the inverter
transforms DC power into AC electricity
and regulates the charge of batteries.
The batteries store electricity that can be
used at night.
Photovoltaic systems are modular, you
can start with a basic system and add on
as needed.

Solar Water Pumping
A typical solar powered
pumping system consists
of a solar panel array that
powers AC or DC pump,
which in turn powers a
bore or surface pump. The
water is often pumped from the
ground or stream into a storage
tank that provides a gravity
feed, so energy storage is not
needed for these systems.

Power Backup system
These systems automatically provide instant back up
electricity from the battery bank when power from
utility providers/generators unexpectedly shuts down.
You may also combine an inverter system with a
generator for protection against longer power outages.
A generator only has to run for shorter periods during
longer outages to recharge the battery bank. Power
back up systems automatically provides instant back up
electricity from the battery bank when power from
utility providers/generators unexpectedly shuts down.
Your system size depends on the number of appliances
you choose to power. A backup system powers an
electric sub panel (circuit breaker panel or outlets)
which in turn supplies electricity to business appliances
in the event of any power disruption.
During normal power conditions the inverter maintains
the batteries at full charge while during a power failure
the DC battery energy is converted to AC power and
fed to the supply circuits. Systems include two principal
components, a DC/AC power inverter with built in
battery charger and a battery bank.
The machine works automatically and the changeover
time is less than 20 milliseconds (fraction of a second).

The water is often pumped from the ground or stream into a storage tank that provides a gravity feed, so energy storage is not needed for these systems. 14 Solar water pumping system in Dhoobley, Somalia

  • 16. Power Backup system These systems automatically provide instant back up electricity from the battery bank when power from utility providers/generators unexpectedly shuts down. You may also combine an inverter system with a generator for protection against longer power outages. A generator only has to run for shorter periods during longer outages to recharge the battery bank. Power back up systems automatically provides instant back up electricity from the battery bank when power from utility providers/generators unexpectedly shuts down. Your system size depends on the number of appliances you choose to power. A backup system powers an electric sub panel (circuit breaker panel or outlets) which in turn supplies electricity to business appliances in the event of any power disruption. During normal power conditions the inverter maintains the batteries at full charge while during a power failure the DC battery energy is converted to AC power and fed to the supply circuits. Systems include two principal components, a DC/AC power inverter with built in battery charger and a battery bank. The machine works automatically and the changeover time is less than 20 milliseconds (fraction of a second). 16 INVERTER/CHARGER OPERATION Refrigerator Microwave TV/Video Phones/fax Computers Printers Lights LOADS
