2. Introduction
It is an investigation to visualize
vagina and cervix using a
colposcope.
It was introduced in 1936 by
Heinselman to visualize the surface
of cervix
Colposcope is a binocular
microscope giving a 10-20 times
magnification
It is useful in localizing abnormal
areas and accurately obtaining
directed biopsies from them
3. Colposcope
• The colposcope is a
relatively simple
instrument that allows
examination of the
cervix under light
illumination at various
low-power
magnifications.
• It consists of a binocular
microscope and light
source, often
incorporating a beam
splitter to allow
attachment of a still or
video camera.
4. Aims of
Colposcopy
To study the cervix when Pap smear detects
abnormal cells
To locate abnormal areas and take a biopsy
To study the extent of abnormal lesion
Conservative surgery under colposcopic guidance
Follow up of conservative therapy cases
5. Advantages of
Colposcopy
It reduces false positive findings
In ASCUS it is used as a triage to rule out high grade
lesion
Colposcopy locates abnormal lesions which is helpful
in concert with Pap smear which locates abnormal
cells
It decides whether a small biopsy or conization is
required
