Mr. Jurgen Sawatzki is an undergraduate student at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. As
part of his internship at the Center for Space Plasma and Aeronomic Research at UAH, he has been
assigned to work on a project called JEM-EUSO. During his work started on March21, 2014 he took
complete responsibility of the mechanical design Xenon Flasher calibration system that will be installed
on a helicopter and used for calibration of the balloon born instrument. While working on the
mechanical design, Jurgen showed excellent knowledge and creativity. He has very efficient decision
making capabilities, initiative and hand-on working skills which allowed building of the system on a tight
schedule.
Mr. Sawatzki has expressed very strong interest in electrical design and especially in
instrumentation for nuclear physics. He continuously studies theoretical fundamentals of nuclear
physics. Curr~ntlv he is involved in research and development of advanced optical readout system for
upgrading of the solar particle spectrometer.
I recommend Jurgen Sawatzki for a Scholarship Award. It would definitely help him to develop
his professional skills.
Sincerely,
Research Engineer III

To whom it may Concern:
I am the supervisor ofMr. lUTgen Sawatzki here at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. I am
writing to recommend Mr. Sawatzki for the U.S. Navy Nuclear Propulsion Engineering Program.
Mr. Sawatzki has been working on my research projects for three months now. I have found him
to be an excellent research assistant. He is very capable, creative and hard-working. He is also
very polite and a joy to work with.
He was responsible for the mechanical design ofa helicopter-borne system to flash lights while
the helicopter under-flies a down-looking experiment on a stratospheric balloon in order to
calibrate it. When he joined our team this design was on a tight schedule. He worked quickly and
accurately to create the design and oversee its manufacture and assembly. He has also
participated in fit-checks of this equipment on the helicopter.
Now he is beginning to work on a satellite experiment we are developing to measure solar
energetic particle energy spectra. Mr. Sawatzki is very interested in nuclear physics and studies it
intensively on his own. He hopes to become an instructor in the Navy's nuclear propulsion
program and I think he is an excellent candidate for such a position once he completes his
education. I strongly recommend Mr. Sawatzki for a U.S. Navy Nuclear Propulsion Engineering
Program. I am sure this award will result in the education of an excellent nuclear engineer.
Sincerely,
