Private equity firms are increasingly using debt to fund acquisitions rather than equity, allowing them to take on larger deals. Leveraged buyouts completed using high levels of debt leave little room for error and carry great risk. The large amounts of debt taken on in acquisitions will increase the likelihood of defaults and bankruptcies if the economy declines.
