1. There are +1M people in Spain who suffer from dementia (~60% Alzheimer), and +47M
worldwide. This global problem affects almost 14% of people older than 65 and is increasing.
Its treatment has a global social cost of €730 bn (~1% world's GDP). Additionally, it seriously
undermines the quality of life of the people who suffer it.
Our disruptive idea consists of using augmented reality glasses to assist people who are at an
early or middle stage of the illness during their daily activities (e.g. forgetting people's names,
remembering appointments, getting lost, etc.).
We have focused on solving three common problems that will improve the level of
independence and quality of life of the patients through cognitive reinforcement:
Who is who? Use of facial recognition technology to assist in the identification of
people. The patient is able to receive real-time information of the people they see
through their glasses.
Where am I? Use of augmented reality and voice-activated satnav to guide patients
(e.g. “take me home", "I'm lost”). Carers will be able to connect to the navigator and
monitor the activity and location of patients.
What should I do? Use of augmented reality to help patients schedule and execute
their daily tasks. The virtual assistant will propose a daily routine and indicate the
steps needed to perform each task (e.g.: 1) go for the pillbox in the chest of drawers,
2) take the pills of today, Tuesday, and 3) top up the dispenser with Donepezil
medicine).
Various studies have demonstrated that cognitive stimulation therapies delay the
development of the illness to its hardest stage. Our solution would extend this delay increasing
self-sufficiency and reducing the average cost per patient (~€32k/year - ~1.5 FTE).
At Indra, we can leverage on three key elements to turn this idea into a reality:
Specific know-how of the health sector
Differential capabilities and technology assets (biometrics, mobility, AR, etc.)
Great prestige in managing high-profile projects for the public sector
This idea has great potential to improve the lives of millions of people and tackle one of the
universal biggest near future problems: increasing care cost of chronic diseases in a
continuously aging and unhealthier society. Let’s think as pioneers and help reshape the future
of global healthcare!
