1. New Parking to Encourage Bike Transportation at SUNY Plattsburgh
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. ( Nov. 5, 2010) – A ceremonial installation of new bicycle racks is set
for 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, outside of the Myers Fine Arts Building on the SUNY Plattsburgh
campus.
The event will be hosted by the college’s Department of Environmental Health and Safety,
Maintenance and Operations, the Campus Committee for Environmental Responsibility,
Biketopia and the Earth and Environmental Science Department. All have been working together
to get the new racks installed and will celebrate these efforts with speeches and a ceremonial bolt
tightening.
Installation of the new bicycle racks began in early November and will continue into the spring
term. The racks are designed to provide more secure and appealing parking for students, faculty
and staff.
Phase one of the bike installation was funded by the Campus Green Grant initiative. These funds
come from an optional $3 fee assessed on students’ bills each semester.
Phase one is part of a much larger project to provide adequate and secure parking at all campus
buildings. Many of the older racks currently in use will be replaced. Racks that are still in good
condition will be donated to Plattsburgh schools.
All are invited to learn about this first phase of an initiative to bring world-class bicycle parking
to SUNY Plattsburgh -- and to learn of efforts to bring other sustainable investments to campus
using Green Grant funds.
The Green Fee was initiated in the summer of 2007 as an optional semester fee to provide
funding for sustainable campus projects.
