Rain Gauge
1.
2. My Gauge
As you can see in the picture, I did the 2 liter bottle gauge. I
cut the top off of a 2 liter Pepsi bottle I got from Mrs.
Ward. I then taped the top back on upside down, to act as
a funnel that would catch the rain. Then I filled the bottom
of the bottle with a sand and rocks mix. Next I filled my
bottle up with some water, then gave it time to soak into
the mix until it was just above the sand. Next, I put a ruler
next to my bottle and marked where the water was and
every inch and half inch mark from that starting point to
the top of the bottle. My bottle will catch the rain and I will
check how high it is on the inch marks to see how many
inches of rain we got.
3. Sunday Morning
On Sunday morning there were no clouds in the sky. There
was no precipitation coming down and none had come
down that night. It was warm and humid outside. My
gauge had a small amount of dew droplets on the lip of
the bottle. The water was still at the starting point.
4. Sunday Night
All was the same as the morning until some
cumulonimbus clouds suddenly moved in. They poured
rain for amount 10-15 minutes the stopped and drifted
away. I went outside to check the gauge after the lightning
eased down. The sky was still very dark with some
lightning. The air had gotten colder when the front moved
in, so I assume it was a low pressure system. I am guessing
it was most likely a Continental Polar front. The gauge was
between ¼ and ½ of an inch.
5. Monday Morning
The gauge was at the same place as it was last night. Once
again there was dew on the lip of the bottle. It was a
cloudless morning and it was starting to heat up. It wasn’t
very humid. I would assume that a small amount of the
rain evaporated from last night, but it wasn’t noticeable.
I’m sure that if it doesn’t rain today, which its not
supposed to, a noticeable amount will be evaporated.
6. Monday Night
Well, I was right this morning. It was a hot day with a small
amount of wind. The sun was out all day and water
evaporated. Now the water is only slightly above the
starting point. There are a few puffy clouds in the
sky, maybe cumulous. It is warm outside but not humid.
There has not been any rain today.
7. Tuesday Morning
As with the other mornings, there was dew from last night
on the lip of the gauge. The water is at the starting point
and there are no clouds in the sky. It is a warm morning
with a little breeze. I got no rain last night. It isn’t humid
right now, but maybe it will get more humid later in the
day.
8. Tuesday Night
The water is below the starting point, so I will fill it back up
to the start. It wasn’t humid today but it was pretty hot. Its
70 degrees at 5:15 so I’m guessing it was over 80 today.
There are currently no clouds overhead and I received no
rain in my gauge today sadly.
